I don't remember much about this except that it had to do with the idea of holiness. Holiness carried with it the sense of separation from everything imperfect or defiled. It's amazing that the attitude changed within a few hundred years to be much more inclusive, showing a supposed son of God actually seeking out such people and pronouncing them more fit for holiness than the so-called perfect and righteous.

brentan comments on Nov 17, 2019:
I think she's on to something. I must admit I don't know her. Art is the expression of the imagination, an act of creation, in the works of William Blake. It comes across as Platonic where forms are concerned, I suppose. Blake described his imaginary characters, who personify the struggle for victory over the forces that keep us mentally imprisoned in a type of Matrix, as 'giant forms'.
I have NO idea what that means.

brentan comments on Nov 14, 2019:
If you were to take a look at Galatians 5:22, 23, you would see a list of virtues that are exactly the same in name as human virtues. The idea was that these godly virtues were expressions (fruits) of holy spirit so they were theoretically more potent and stable than their human equivalents. When I was religious, I never understood how Christians, in general, never managed to demonstrate ordinary virtues, never mind their supernatural equivalents, and in the end I had to give up on it as a fantasy. So I believe there are only our human values and we better make the best of them if we want to make life more pleasant for ourselves.

I would be delighted if I could handle walking 100 miles. Somebody, if it's not done already, should write about a possible relationship between religion and drugs. It is accepted, I think, that shamanism was not just about perceiving the supernatural but entering that state to gain information and coming back when the job is done. Maybe, like a lot of Catholic sites, San Diego de Compostela has an earlier pagan past. Anyway, I would love to see the place and take in the vibe, and then travel the extra 87 kms to Finisterre in Portugal to try to capture that primitive sense of being at the edge of the world.

brentan comments on Nov 11, 2019:
“Man has no Body distinct from his soul; for that called Body is a portion of a Soul discerned by the five senses, the chief inlets of Soul in this age.” ― William Blake That's close too to Kant's idea of the a posteriori, experiential side of our cognition. The other side is a priori and both work together to create knowledge and experience. A lot of people are disappointed with their bodies. They see them as inferior and causes of sin. It's a pity because it means we view ourselves as cerebral creatures who are in a fallen state because of our bodies. I prefer to think the opposite: that we are human animals who have progressed in a wonderful way over time. Human animals have very basic bodily functions and desires and I think the trick to get the best from our dual-makeup is to use our brains to modify our behaviour so as to answer our bodies needs and wants in a responsible way.
I like this one.

It must be hard to throw off the influence of Bishop Ussher. I like listening to Graham Hancock talk about civilisations that go way back further than 4004 BC. In James DeMeo's book Saharasia, he gives evidence for a great desertification that destroyed civilisations that thrived before 4000 BC.
