Religions: Mutualists, commensals or parasites?
brentan comments on Jul 24, 2019:
I would choose mutualism too. Harari claims that humanity has been moving inexorably towards unity since time immemorable. If so, religion has played a large part as a unifying force, not just in faith but also advancing our shared culture. In fairness, that doesn't mean it had to come about the way it did. I wonder how our Western world would have turned out if the main forces in our history were Celtic tribes.

I suppose you could think what more do you want from me if I paid you but there's no human interaction, just the business exchange. It's really sad and I guess it's just people giving up on people before they've uttered a word. I wouldn't like to get out of bed in the morning with that attitude.

brentan comments on Jul 23, 2019:
In Nazi Germany, the people placed in concentration camps were those who could not or chose not to get out of their own countries. They were placed there to be killed. In America, it is people who could not or chose not to stay in their own countries. There is no intention of killing them. I think the awfulness of the camps is an attempt at deterring more immigrants from choosing to enter the country illegally. From what I've read, Obama and Eisenhower dealt with illegal immigrants in a much more efficient manner that attracted little media attention. Trump's mistake seems to be not dealing with the problem in a forthright manner and trying to make two wrongs make a right.
In England they just elected a new Prime Minister.

This is terrific! I haven't read anything in ages about how the religious community is dealing with this. Perhaps most of them are happy enough with Genesis as an allegory. Another interesting thing about this is how the scientific community deals with evidence of so many cultures prior to Sumer. And then there's the issues it raises for those who believe the Anunnaki created human beings and the first human civilisation in Sumer.

I'm not convinced from what you posted that there is anything wrong with you. After all, normal people are very over-rated and don't usually stand up to much inspection. Maybe you're just different; everything in nature seems to fall on a bell curve. I guess that doesn't reduce the pain of loneliness, though. If there is a flood like the one they say happened about 12,000 BC, the result might be the same, a civilisation will disappear and there will be a new beginning. This re-start world might just be the thing to ensure the survival of the earth. I hope we survive to try again.

The real midlife crisis confronting many Americans
brentan comments on Jul 18, 2019:
The last time I looked, Homer Simpson was dedicated to getting his Dad back to the old folks' home. It reflected the understanding that society was outsourcing the care of its parentage to nursing homes. I wasn't aware that mid-life Americans were now becoming carers for their aged parents. There was always an understanding that old folk wanted to stay part of their families and not isolated with their peers. Looking after your folk was seen as a good thing. Selfishness was seen as the reason for dumping parents in homes. I wonder is the sense of crisis justified.

So... you mean to tell me Jesus was born from a woman who was a virgin?
brentan comments on Jul 18, 2019:
I think the problem is that they claim she was always a virgin while scripture mentions Jesus' brothers. And his mother and his brothers came, and standing outside they sent to him and called him.  And a crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers are outside, seeking you.” - Mark 3:31,32. To be fair, it is possible that brother had a wider meaning than it has now. If Jesus' brothers were Joseph's sons from an earlier marriage...
