A lot of people think Sodom was destroyed over homosexuality. It happened, according to the prophet Ezekiel, because of pride, greed and general immorality (Ezekiel chapter 16). I think society is destroying itself these days for the same reasons.

I can't think of a book at the moment but I'm really enjoying John Vervaeke's Awakening From The Meaning Crisis lectures on YT. There are 19 available right now and there will be 50 eventually, one every Friday. Here's the first: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54l8_ewcOlY&t=2620s

I really need to talk to fellow liberal Muslims or Ex-Muslims about some of their coping mechanisms.
brentan comments on Jun 1, 2019:
I remember seeing this problem up-front in the Jehovah's Witnesses. I think it's because the person's whole life is bound up in the faith, not just religious observance. Spouse, children, friends, work are all affected by being part of this community. Because of this, many JWs live a double life. I don't know what effect this can have on the psyche. I can only imagine that there is dissonance in the mind between what is true and what pretends to be true. I think that dissonance must lead somewhere but I don't know where.

brentan comments on May 31, 2019:
Here's what I think is an interesting scriptural verse from the apostle Paul about growing up in faith. It could, I think, be applied to a human race that is growing up too. When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things - 1 Corinthians 13:11. I hope we don't throw out the baby with the bathwater in a rush to mature. But it isn't obvious what the bathwater is. I'll stick my neck out and say I think it's morality.

We probably have to think of spirituality in a secular way. But how to put it in words? And even though the Bible talks about two people becoming one flesh and we're not great fans of it these days, is there something to that? Perhaps a synergy.

brentan comments on May 26, 2019:
The normal mechanistic view of the brain dictates that once the brain is dead, consciousness is dead. I really like Rupert Sheldrake's idea that the brain is a tool to allow our bodies to realise consciousness. That allows for the possibility that consciousness is not gone after death but rather the need for the brain as a tool is gone. His ideas of how memories, which he believes also exist outside the brain, tie in to this are very interesting. I think his best book dealing with these ideas is The Presence of the Past.
