Another Moses! Moses knew God wanted men and women to stay married until death, no exceptions, but he put divorce into the law anyway because of their hard-heartedness. Jesus replied, "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. - Matthew 19:8.

I think I would like that book. Narrative was the way of myth for such a long time. I hope it won't die out completely. Argument is rationality based. Pirisg's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance did a fine job of trying to unite the two in his concept of quality. The divide is often expressed as Classical and Romantic. There is a sense out there, not entirely new, that the classical approach leaves out a lot of human experience, not being made for certain tasks, such as giving meaning to life.

If you think saying stupid, flirty, suggestive bullshit to women is "funny", it's NOT.
brentan comments on May 24, 2019:
I think in theory it is probably best to treat women as intelligent human beings and discuss things with them as such. Being a bit autistic, it was aways the only way for me to interact instead of an option. But I can't deny that flirting as basic interaction has been the way for decades if not generations or the whole history of men and women. My guess is that it has always been the common denominator and incorporates the integral sexual element of male-female interaction. It is social interaction and it pushes the envelope towards sexual as well. What will unintelligent men and women do to find partners if they can't interact at their own level? I think the problem has more to do with intelligent people getting annoyed with unintelligent people trying to connect with them.

I like the idea of the Hegelian dialectic. You know how it goes- I say something, you say the opposite, the truth is somewhere in the mix. I don't know if Hegel factored stupid opinions into the mix. Maybe he did and he thought there weren't enough stupid opinions to wreck the theory. He might have been more optimistic than me because he probably entertained smarter company than most of us do.

That person must have been really speaking about him or herself. Lots of people would go mad with solitude. They say we're naturally social creatures and I believe we are, even though my life has become reclusive. Does the highest form of freedom mean not being conscious of things other than necessities? Like Socrates, I really believe the meaning of life is very important. I suppose that's not exactly the same as having meaning in your life. I think that is essential and the lack of it is causing enormous problems in society with people trying to replace meaning with drugs and alcohol.

So I don't think trying to change the collectives we live in will help much (not that you suggested it would). I think progress in the Christian world has come about through watering down the doctrines and leaving the logoi to stand. I'm hopeful that this watering down is currently in progress in Islam as they interact with the rest of the world.

brentan comments on May 21, 2019:
Here's William Blake's take on the development of religion: The ancient poets animated all sensible objects with gods or geniuses, calling them by the names and adorning them with the properties of woods, rivers, mountains, lakes, cities, nations, and whatever their enlarged and numerous senses could perceive. And particularly they studied the genius of each city and country, placing it under its Mental Deity; till a system was formed, which some took advantage of, and enslaved the vulgar by attempting to realise or abstract the Mental Deities from their objects - thus began priesthood; choosing forms of worship from poetic tales. And at length they pronounced that the gods had ordered such things. Thus men forgot that all deities reside in the human breast.
