brentan comments on Feb 23, 2019:
What was written in the paper would be economic bad news for any country as things stand but something needs to change to stop damaging the earth. Maybe some other group should write a paper showing what they think should be done or why things should stay as they are.
I have lost all respect for Richard Branson.

Wasn't the concert scheduled for yesterday, Friday? I don't understand the reports coming out about it. Such as 'Thousands attended' but it seems it did not go ahead. If it does eventually go ahead, and it is televised, it will be the first big concert I don't watch.

brentan comments on Feb 23, 2019:
My first album was James Taylor's Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon. The double=sleeve cover was really beautiful. My first 45 was Joe Cocker's version of You've Got A Friend. That caused an uproar in the house.

Do you make a conscious effort to be happy and the best person you can be - or do you just go about ...
brentan comments on Feb 23, 2019:
I think I've decided what makes me happy and every day is pretty much the same but quite pleasant. I could only suggest to people to find what they love and develop it. For me, it's most literature. For others, maybe sports, travel, helping others etc. There are a huge amount of people who cannot even aspire to loving anything because of their disadvantaged upbringing and I feel sure the only thing they can do to try to make life bearable is take drugs.

Who is Socialist?
brentan comments on Feb 23, 2019:
The point, I think, is that no-one in the public eye in politics is suggesting socialism. Some promote social democracy, which is based on capitalism and wants to extend pre-existing social systems in America to close the immense gap between the haves and have-nots. Labelling these politicians as socialist is dishonest.

I've read a theory that consciousness is out there, external to the brain which works like a TV transmitter to conduct consciousness into our bodies. This would mean that when the brain is damaged, it struggles as a transmitter to function but consciousness is still intact, just not getting through. Then when we die, consciousness continues, not needing a transmitter anymore.

A talented man. I saw the Blockheads at a venue called the Stardust in Dublin where dozens of people were burned to death just a few years later. They played very well but my lingering memory was the aggression that came from the stage and permeated the air. Perhaps it was part of their persona; I just don't know.

Why did an ancient Egyptian king erase all gods but Aten? | Aeon Essays
brentan comments on Feb 21, 2019:
I dunno. I thought it sounded reasonable to understand the situation of Hebrews and Egyptians living together in Egypt as the basis for some shared history. The commonalities, Moses being ethnically Hebrew and culturally Egyptian, the one true god, circumcision and the significance of the colour blue might indicate one came for the other. The last two, I accept, might have been shared across a huge number of cultures. The Hebrew exodus might have been the flight from Egypt (but not necessarily as the Bible writers tell it) after the priests rebelled in Egypt and went back to their old gods.

A sense of awe is very beneficial for our health and happiness according to a recent study.
brentan comments on Feb 21, 2019:
I remember a time when Americans expressed awe almost to the point of cliché. I can understand it after my first view of Snoqualmie Falls and the Columbian dam. You don’t hear so many positive expressions anymore as the country struggles with a new kind of civil war. My sense of awe comes from the arts these days – the perceptions of ‘inspired’ writers, musicians and other artists. But what about the benefits of feeling small in the face of the universe? And would the converse mean that the search for individuality and fame is a bad thing?
