The thunder of the drums of nationalism has always stirred the blood, but it damages the heart.
brentan comments on Feb 16, 2019:
I think society has tired of liberal attitudes and relative values and global everything and wants something tangible to hold onto again. I fear the pendulum will swing back forcefully in the opposite direction before it levels out again.

brentan comments on Feb 16, 2019:
I don't think it has much, if anything at all, to do with moral judgement. I think it's about finance. It's a while since I read anything about it but I think it was about the rights of transgender soldiers to get the army to pay for treatments.

What is fear?
brentan comments on Feb 16, 2019:
Danger is real, you bet. But if you don't respond to fear, the result can be very real too. That seems to be the Viking Ragnar faced with a monster. I've just been reading Beowulf who had to face three monsters in his lifetime.

It's a question of balance between individuality and social consciousness. Individuality's good and bad sides were shown with the old pioneers and cowboy gangs. In the end, social consciousness won out. In today's world, I would call that social consciousness social democracy.

brentan comments on Feb 13, 2019:
My guess is that cultural evolution is not always a good thing. Quite likely, genetic evolution has also had its backward and forward steps on the way to who we are today. I think we are placing all cultural value on utility and dismissing all the less tangible cultural values such as spirituality, metaphor, intuition and whatever else relates us to connection with the world around us. We call a lot of this connection to the intangible world art. Whatever we call this side of our lives, we better fight for it because as consumers living in a capitalist world, we are making ourselves nothing more than utilities too,
