Clutch - Emily Dickinson [youtu.be] Emily Dickinson Won't you lay your hair down low?
brentan comments on Feb 8, 2019:
I really enjoyed the sentiment in that song. Emily came across very strait-laced for someone whose family life was full of 'complications' as anyone else's. Here's another song about her written by Duke Special from a poem by Michael Longley: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCztMBruLRY

What do you choose?
brentan comments on Feb 8, 2019:
I think seeking happiness directly is counter-productive, like desperately trying to go to sleep. Maybe we should choose to do things that make us happy as a result of those things. I'm not sure about getting happiness through thinking good things but it might work like meditation.

I saw an example of the effort made to fully understand what a person of another opinion is saying. I know it's hardly complete empathy but it's a start in argument. It's called 'steelmanning' and it's an attempt to do the very opposite of strawmanning. Neither of you are allowed to continue the discussion without first relating back to the other person what they have said and get their approval. I saw it used to good effect when Douglas Murray asked Jordan Peterson and Sam Harris to do it in debate with each other.

7 key takeaways from the SOTU speech: 1. Immigration "Congress has 10 days left to pass a bill that will fund our government, protect our homeland and secure our very dangerous southern border." 2. 'Partisan' investigations "An economic miracle is taking place in the United States and the only thing that can stop it are foolish wars, politics or ridiculous partisan investigations." 3. Trade "To build on our incredible economic success, one priority is paramount - reversing decades of calamitous trade policies." 4. Infrastructure "Both parties should be able to unite for a great rebuilding of America's crumbling infrastructure." 5. Healthcare "The next major priority for me, and for all of us, should be to lower the cost of healthcare and prescription drugs and to protect patients with pre-existing conditions." 6. Foreign Policy As we make progress in these negotiations (with Afghan groups), we will be able to reduce our troops' presence and focus on counter-terrorism and we will indeed focus on counter-terrorism. 7. Abortion "To defend the dignity of every person, I am asking the Congress to pass legislation to prohibit the late-term abortion of children who can feel pain in the mother's womb."
