I'm thinking of Islam and FGM. They fear (I think) female sexual pleasure. And America seems to fear female sexual gratification without a man. I fear it too, wondering where it will lead to, but it fits in well in a world where unilateral pleasure is becoming the norm. It based on true life and is about a father, driven by religious zeal, who takes his wife and daughters out of 1950's America to Africa. All I know, or think I know, is that the earliest use of the term is in, of course, the Bible. It says there that the antichrist is both coming and has already come. The description of the antichrist is 'anyone who doesn't believe that Jesus came in the flesh'. The timeline for events has extended 2000 years by now, but I sincerely believe that the end days were to come with a generation of Jesus' death so the last days were imminent. I haven't added the relevant scriptures because I'm pretty sure you know them already but if you want me to do some research on the scriptural sources in general, I will do my best.

I think her belief is a perverse twist on the fact that life is suffering to a large extent. I would say the virtue lies in how suffering is dealt with. Mother Teresa, if I understand her right, actually thought suffering should be encouraged as a sacrificial gift to God. If she had understood scripture, she would have known that the sacrifice to God had been made, once and for all time, by Christ. The Christian imperative was not to egotistically believe that they could add to Christ's sacrifice but simply to believe it had been done and live a holy life trusting in it.

My experience of religion was more about the condemnation of independent thinking than reasoning. Perhaps the connection is the condemnation of purely objective reasoning. We were encouraged to reason on the scriptures and even had a book of the same name to encourage us, but that didn't mean we should question if the scriptures were right - just that we should wonder how they applied in our lives.

I think a case could be made for society rejecting wisdom that is already available. In modern computer thinking, data begets information which begets knowledge. The old thinking was about a knowledge of spirituality that manifested itself in wisdom. It was entirely bound up in an acceptance of the existence of God and the manifestation of his values. That acceptance is gone, of course, and now wisdom is perhaps just seen as an eccentricity of Eastern religion. So there is no concept of secular wisdom unless we see humanitarian values as the road to wisdom..

The idea is developed into a Logos, which seems to be a kind of spirit-driven communication to the world to place order and meaning into it. I don't know if there is a similar idea in Eastern religion but I wouldn't be surprised if the whole ancient world held a common pool of basic ideas that differed only in the details.
