Stopping arm sales bad for the economy Environmental protections bad for the economy.
brentan comments on Oct 22, 2018:
Government assumes everything is based on the economy. Even the constitution is interpreted this way, in terms of the right to pursue happiness etc. The old view was expressed well in Marlowe's Faust: For, falling to a devilish exercise, And glutted now with learning’s golden gifts, He surfeits upon cursed necromancy; Nothing so sweet as magic is to him, Which he prefers before his chiefest bliss. The old bliss was man's greatest happiness that he had pleased the Lord and would live in Heaven. Faust had different ideas. But this isn't about religion. It's about how to be happy, and is economics the key to it. If it isn't, (and rich people are not good examples of happy people), what does it take and how should government work to help people attain it?
What's more inspirational than a Trump rally?
brentan comments on Oct 22, 2018:
Gott in Himmel, make America great again. Those Nazi rallies were very inspirational. For the participators, it's very emotional. Large group feeling is terrific, I remember it well at concerts. Sharing the passion. Sometimes it was almost religious, especially at Leonard Cohen's concerts.
Story time!
brentan comments on Oct 22, 2018:
I wonder what narrative we might create that is more suitable for today. This was the long and interesting debate held over four sessions between Sam Harris and Jordon Peterson in Vancouver, Dublin and London. It centred on the intrinsic values and differences between facts and values, with Harris drawing value from facts that can be drawn from science and Peterson from values that can be drawn from Biblical narratives.
Actually, this is pretty much how I live.

Rebecca Solnit on Rewriting the World’s Broken Stories and the Paradigm-Shifting Power of Calling ...
brentan comments on Oct 22, 2018:
It is of course about truth. That’s easier a given than the reason for stories. I’ve listened with fascination to Jordon Peterson discussing how truth has been disseminated through stories as a medium of choice since time immemorial. It’s also the reason why people write poetry. It’s not the narrative; it’s the attempt to capture elusive truth. To trap it when it’s not looking, so to speak. Perhaps it’s true to say that stories and poetry have had their day as vehicles of truth. I’m thinking that in the case of books, narrative and truth are now separated in reading material, i.e. placed in the fiction or the psychology section of the bookstore. Poetry books still sell but I think to a niche market. Maybe the reason is that the purpose of words has become to disseminate facts, not truth, information but not meaning. The recent descent into the verbal abyss has been the total disconnect between words and meaning, never mind words and truth.
What's up people , i have got a topic to talk about , are u ready for me?

brentan comments on Oct 22, 2018:
I suppose religious people feel there is no 'soul' in mathematics. I mean in the sense of aspirations, feelings etc. So science in general doesn't give them all they need. But atheists do get what they need from science, which I think means that somehow this 'soul' is in the mix, maybe not in the laws of physics but in the laws of biology. But biology and physics must be cut from the same cloth, I think.
In touch with his feminine side!
brentan comments on Oct 22, 2018:
I like the old idea of a man and a woman becoming one in union with each other. That would make the woman his feminine side and the man her masculine side. We've come a long way from that understanding.

That was nice - the unofficial national anthem of Scotland. I read that Italy has a unofficial national anthem in Verdi's Va Pensiero but when I mentioned it to a young Italian recently, he knew nothing about it. That's a great song! I don't think we have one in the Republic of Ireland. I think every country should have one - the official ones are often terrible.

Ancient Aliens.
brentan comments on Oct 20, 2018:
I haven't seen it. If it's about the Anunnaki, I find that fascinating. Especially how they often link it closely to the ancient civilisation in Sumer. But maybe Graham Hancock is correct about ancient civilisation being much older than is generally accepted. If so, that would give humanity much more time to learn the skills we were told were given to them in a relatively short period of time by the 'men of fame'.

It must be because the Koran speaks to how slaves (the people of your right hand) should be treated. Curiously, the Bible focuses more on how the slaves should behave toward their masters.

brentan comments on Oct 19, 2018:
I like the old Biblical idea of the soul. It comes from the Hebrew word nephesh. It mean the complete person, both physical and mental components together. That understanding of soul was in use until recently - for example, 200 souls were lost in the shipwreck.
