I think America was a melting pot of cultures bringing their linguistic idiosyncrasies to the table. Webster may well have been trying to reduce those differences to a minimum while also doing his very best to use specific words for different things, such as holidays and vacation.

If you don't fall into those categories 'time and unforeseen occurrence fall them all' (Ecclesiastes 9:11) so it's just bad luck.

Tolle offers a calm place in a storm. I enjoy his teachings. The question is how to get the balance right in a world demanding you fit in so as get your basic human needs. It's an even tougher question when you have a family. The Christian proposal to solve that problem was to 'seek God's Kingdom first and then all other things will be added to you'. I tend to judge moral issues by going back to cave-dwelling times and asking what habits were developed to ensure the success of a tribe. I think successful habits were later converted to morals and linked to approval by the gods and then a ticket to heaven. We don't have to go far back in history to see polygamy justified as a way to help a tribe survive. It would be interesting to know if our modern societies could survive the total breakdown of the old habits.

And in all fairness, the liberal notion ignores some very restrictive rules about sex.
