Optimally I'd be working as a software QA analyst and technical writer, but cheap offshore labor has made that difficult to find lately. So at present I work as a science demonstrator and field trip leader for a children's museum. I'm an avid bicycle rider and regularly go for 40-70 mile rides, and other hobbies include astronomy, magic, day hikes, swimming, and plotting to take over the world and fix everything wrong with it. Politically I'm very liberal and oppose everything Trump stands for. On a more personal level, I enjoy helping people, teaching people new things, and trying new things and foods.

I work at a childrens museum conducting field trips much of the time. The other day I was holding the door for a group coming in for our patio, and I held my hand out for the kids to high-five me as they came in (they love that). One kid near the end did his wind up, then in one motion he had a cough, covered it with his hand, and then high-fived me with the same hand. So I immediately made my way to the restroom and washed my hands. I so don't want to spend a week or two sick right before the holidays. I also wish I could afford to call in sick if I did come down with something. That's mostly a problem with working for a non-profit.
Many of us think that men and women, on an average, have similar sex drives.
chilehead9 comments on Dec 4, 2018:
This is also a side-effect of the cultures in places like China and India, where there is a high pressure to have male heirs, and also pressure to limit the number of children they have. So they abort female fetuses as soon as they can determine the gender. With modern technology, this will shortly lead to those nations being populated with high numbers of incels. https://www.quora.com/Why-is-it-illegal-to-determine-the-sex-of-a-fetus-in-India-when-it-is-in-violation-of-my-individual-freedom-So-long-that-I-do-not-intend-to-wrongly-use-the-information-gained-I-dont-see-why-such-a-thing-should-be-illegal

My family draws names out of a hat at Thanksgiving, the name you draw out of the hat is the one person you're obligated to buy a gift for. Of course, everyone is welcome to buy more gifts for the minors. But the whole extended family gets together for a meal and to open the presents. And we save a lot of money on not having to buy gifts for two dozen people, since a good chunk of the family can't afford to buy that many.

chilehead9 comments on Dec 14, 2018:
> you state some facts All good so far > her Christian sister steps in Was she part of the conversation before that? It sounds like she wasn't, but she heard something that went counter to a topic that she has made a core part of her personality - so they feel like you're threatening them. > and says that you are being manipulative Stating facts is manipulation? Holding on to a point of view in the face of facts that contradict it, and trying to ensure others take up or maintain that same point of view - THAT'S manipulation, among other things. > said old friend of the family suddenly has an outburst and keeps saying the word narcissist as if your study of narcissism is infuriating to them In other words, they're plugging their ears and saying "La la la la, I can't hear you!" They are more attached to that point of view than they are to any ability to let facts sway them in the direction of reality. > accept for referring to Hillary and Trump Except. And you mentioned candidates on both sides of the aisle, so this isn't a position that's biased in favor of either camp. > how do you react? Until they come forward with an apology for their behavior, I'd write them out of my life and wouldn't even attend family gatherings if that person (and/or their sister) was also there. It's not that the issue being discussed is particularly important, but that if they are going to have that sort of reaction to someone stating their opinion and backing it up with facts. That sort of going off the rails isn't acceptable behavior, and if they don't even see that it's not acceptable after time has passed and the heat of the moment has cooled down to room temperature, they're not going to change their pattern of behavior unless there's some consequences for it. If they're even capable of seeing that. I have an aunt that's VERY conservative, and she's completely incapable of seeing that Rush Limpbaugh could be wrong about anything, or that my 8 year old nephew, his brother, and his sister don't appreciate getting books written by him as Christmas presents. She flew off the rails when she discovered that I had >some< liberal views - and I make it a strict point to avoid discussing any kind of politics around her, and steer conversations away from those topics. She's unable to let go of things like that, and I catch some snide remarks from her at family gatherings - she doesn't allow avoiding the topic until she's proven her point of view correct. So I've had, to a lesser degree, to write her out of my life.
Spend time with your parents.......one day they won't be there anymore.

chilehead9 comments on Jan 25, 2019:
My only real interest in the institution is the fact that I still want to have a child, and having married parents tends to be more beneficial for the children. The tax benefits are all right as well, but not really worth the trouble when the divorce arrives. So, while I am looking for a rest-of-my-life kind of relationship that I can sink my everything into, I'm not all that keen on involving the state, and getting any church involved is a non-starter.

chilehead9 comments on Feb 21, 2019:
I've been trying to figure that out since someone ghosted me a bunch of years ago - we'd been on several dates, I'd hung out at her house to watch movies (and nothing more, get your mind out of the romance novels), and I agreed to help her paint the outside of her house... and the next day she just stopped answering her phone, texts, emails, etc. And she even lived in the same city you do. The only thing I've been able to come up with that makes sense (but since when does real life need to make sense?) is that 1] they just weren't feeling it like you were, and 2] when they've said as much to someone else in the recent past, the reaction was **really** bad - like "how dare you reject me!" kind of bad.

Many relationships just don't work out. What's a reason you've ended a relationship?
chilehead9 comments on Mar 7, 2019:
The ones where I initiated the split were because: 1) she was really prone to lengthy depressive episodes, I couldn't help alleviate them, and I was having a lot of trouble dealing with her getting that way on a regular basis. 2) she moved in with one of our male friends when I asked her to spend a little more time at home with me. So I filed for divorce. 3) I really felt like I was being taken advantage of, and wasn't any more than an accessory or appliance. She wasn't putting any effort at all into the relationship, or to helping me pay the rent and utilities after I lost my job (and she still had one). Reasons I've been given (when they bothered to give one): A) I wasn't a church-goer. B) I didn't have enough money in my retirement account, and I sometimes repeated myself in conversations, C) I didn't blow up when she mentioned that she'd talked to the father of her child on the phone - so it was inevitable that she'd end up hurting me. (her reasoning) D) She didn't feel like she was deserving of me. ( <-- decades after she broke things off. Initially it was "it's summer and I want to see other people" followed a few hours later by complete ghosting and no way to get back any of my stuff that she still had). E) She said she just couldn't handle being in a relationship, still recovering from being kidnapped and abused many years ago.
Well.

A better question would be, "Are you sure two hours will be enough time for this?"

The EU Copyright Directive will, it seems, become law over the next few years, in Europe.
chilehead9 comments on Mar 30, 2019:
Most software-related companies realize that there is no way to make web sites compliant with the proposed law - it's technically impossible to have a validation system to confirm the copyright ownership and compliance of everything posted, and no one can hire enough human employees to verify the content, either. This law will basically force most of the sites on the Internet to just block all the IP addresses that resolve to EU nations. But try and talk sense to politicians who are getting dump trucks full of money from RIAA/ MAFIAA -like organizations, and you'll quickly see that little things like feasibility and sense carry no weight. MAFIAA = Music And Film Industry Association of America. Not an actual singular entity, but an umbrella term to encompass the trade groups that are most often guilty of pushing false narratives to restrict people's rights in order to boost their profits (that are mainly declining because of lower-quality products).
Fisherman catches giant shark -- just as bigger creature eats it [cnn.com]
chilehead9 comments on Mar 31, 2019:
At my work's ocean location, I've learned that in the deep sea there are creatures that are capable of eating prey whole that are larger than they are. They don't always survive doing so, but they do accomplish it.
??. Yeah yeah, I know, they're probably fake... Who cares?

[nbcnews.com] Trump threatens potential border closing next week - WTF!!!!!!
chilehead9 comments on Mar 31, 2019:
There's a lot of agriculture that gets shipped north across the border - if he does that, you can expect to see the prices for most, if not all, healthy foods spiking upwards. Yet again, the president that only plays games is doing something to appear serious, and does nothing but hurt Americans that are not billionaires.

I know we'd have threads before about dealbreakers in dating relationships.
chilehead9 comments on Apr 6, 2019:
"How dare you not tolerate my intolerance of people regarding this topic! It's not fair!" What's the possible upside of dating and getting involved with someone that violates one or more of what would be dealbreakers for you? That you become more tolerant of something you dislike so seriously that you're already willing to rule out an otherwise delightful person? That just means you're possibly going to end up in a relationship with someone that you're going to have a lot of friction with (and not the good kind, unless make-up sex is **that** good for you), and you'll likely end up resenting for not giving up that unwanted behavior (that they likely *cannot* give up). I can't imagine being involved with someone that would be investing effort into trying to get me to go to church each Sunday, would make me watch them slowly poison themselves and give themselves lung cancer or emphysema, or make me constantly police their behavior and whereabouts while checking our home for drug caches and/or needles. She sees "self-defeating" as anything that defeats a relationship forming with **her**, not as something that defeats you from forming a relationship with anyone. "Too based on the past" - in other words, what you've learned that you're just not willing to put up with because it absolutely didn't work when you did try to put up with it. Dealbreakers are fine and even necessary, as long as you're open and willing to accept new evidence and re-evaluate them in an honest fashion. Honest being that you look out for what's best for yourself as well as whomever you may get into a relationship with.
Tomorrow, I'm heading for a small festival in Pendleton, South Carolina.
