It turned out that one of my sources used that book as one of their sources, and my paraphrasing of their paraphrasing made it more like the form in that book.

I try to get all the stuff that would a hard stop for some people out in the open quickly - if someone is going to have a problem with something that is that big a part of who I am, I'd rather that be found out as early as possible, not 5-10 dates down the line.

I tried for years with kind of the same situation. All my attempts to discuss issues and/or to find out what they thought the problem was were met with a stone wall, "I don't want to talk about it." Given that history, I'm not willing to let things go nearly that long again with no improvement, even though it's with someone else. Being devoted to the person you're married to doesn't fix anything by itself. So, take that into account when considering my advice. I view ultimatums as a very likely short path to the end of a relationship, so I don't take their use lightly. If you're reached the point where you're asking mostly-strangers on the Internet for advice about whether or not to quit the relationship, then it's probably time to break out an ultimatum. Sit down with him and explain that his behavior in the relationship has changed in a way that you really don't like, you've tried talking to him about it and you don't feel it has improved anything. So you want to make it clear to him that if he isn't willing to take this concern of yours seriously, and make a good-faith effort to work on it, you don't think you can keep going with it. That tells him there's clearly a problem, that you feel it's very serious, and you require his help to work on it. He will know that refusing to address it will likely end the relationship, and with no ambiguity there to let him later claim you sucker-punched him. People in that state aren't always well-equipped to answer the question "how can I help?" Their thoughts are focused in an inward direction. If you have occasion to be around them, or even at their place, just start doing some chores for them - because doing them and other normal things isn't going to occur to them until they've got processing that pain/grief/whatever out of the way. But their family needs feeding, dishes and laundry will need to be done, trash taken out, shopping done, etc. You can ask what groceries they need from the supermarket - a question with a narrow and immediate focus like that will get processed much better than something as nebulous as "can I do anything for you?" From the time I spent teaching disaster preparedness and response classes, part of the section on Critical Incident Stress Debriefing covered the mental issues that people have following a large, stressful incident. Even the firemen and police that respond to disasters feel stress from it and need a recovery, not just the people the building fell on or were in a hurricane that took rescuers a week to find them after. They learned that forcing people to talk and have counseling sessions immediately after such incidents was having the opposite of the desired effect: being made to talk about it on someone else's timetable was denying them the ability to escape from the horror of the situation they saw or lived through, and that hobbled their ability to cope with it in non-destructive ways. So the new recommended way of dealing with that is for you to let them know that whenever they want to talk, you're willing to listen, you'll be near them and helping them, and otherwise you just shut up and let them be - they'll open up and say what they need to get out when they are able to, if they also feel it's safe to talk with you about it.

"The horrible economy isn't because we started a world war and are being punished with harsh sanctions for it, it's all The Jews' fault!" "I don't have to care about my treating those people terribly and constantly cheating them, they're poor not because of that, but because they're lazy and won't put in an honest effort! And they don't make good decisions when they do catch a break!" So, whether they realize they have those feelings inside them or not, they recognize the same in the candidate and feel that identifying with that candidate validates them on a few levels. I'm not going to keep dating someone once I've figured out that it's not going to work out with them; but until I reach that point, I'm going to be putting all of my attention and effort into seeing if we can both convince each other that we can have a good thing together. It's not so hard to talk to multiple people at the same time before actually going on a date, because that happens so infrequently that it's not likely to put me in the position of going on dates with different people in the same month. I had a group of friends that were renting a house together. Since they were different genders, they resolved the argument by making sure everyone put both the seat and the lid down before they left the room. That way, no one seems to be getting preferential treatment, since everyone needs to do something both before and after using the facilities. It also makes sure that the seat is up when any visiting males use the facility, so no wet seats for the ladies to find. I got that habit because I grew up in a house that had a pool out back and a poolhouse bathroom - we had to keep the lid down so the numerous wild animals wouldn't use it as their drinking fountain. There's nothing like running for the bathroom and discovering a family of skunks getting a drink, or a few raccoons dousing their dinner.

The tendency some parts of society have for branding people who get divorced as failures, or referring to a marriage that ends in divorce as a "failure", really irk me. No one gets married (except for tax or green card reasons) with the idea that it might not work out - everyone has forever as their goal and their expectation. But people are different, and sometimes it takes years for people to uncover the hidden parts of their partner or of themselves that make continuing in the marriage to be the biggest mistake they could make. We don't blame puzzle pieces for not fitting together, and we shouldn't be playing blame games with people who entered into a marriage with the good faith intent to make it work. Sometimes it is one person's fault, but more often it's just that the people aren't made for the same thing. It is better that people stop thinking in terms of blame, and start thinking in terms of what they can do to help more people be happy in their lives. I would say congratulations, but the accomplishment is what you have done over the last 6 years - today was just a piece of paper to commemorate it.

I've used OKC in the past with some success, but once Match.com bought them, they lost at least half their utility. I'm currently also on POF, and it is very similar to OKC. The experience with both is that they dangle possible matches in front of you in an effort to try and get you to throw money at them. They have both put some work into removing functionality so you'll feel the urge to spend on them instead of the person you want to date. The guy that started OKC had a blog entry on why for-pay dating sites cannot be as effective as free sites, and that blog entry disappeared as soon as Match.com bought the place. Good thing the Internet saved a copy!

You will never see the Moon and Mars being the same apparent size as long as you are on Earth. It's not physically possible - Mars would have to be within half a million miles of the Earth, and that's not going to happen. Yet every year there's a string of hoaxes running around the internet repeating the claims. The description at that link indicates that the photo is actually a mosaic, which explains why every object in the finished picture is the wrong size when compared to the other objects in the picture - different power eyepieces all[ow] them to take pictures of the objects so their sizes change..

I've learned from experience that if they don't respond in 24 hours, it's best to forget you ever messaged them and move on. If they do get back to you days/weeks/months later, it's a pleasant surprise and I'll deal with it then. But I don't have time to wait on the edge of my seat for each and every person I work up the nerve to message, even if there aren't too many of them.

Yes. I've tried crickets, still hard to get over the ick factor on that, but I did do it. I'm not a fan of octopus. Spicy food doesn't scare me or even slow me down, if anything it attracts me. Because there are videos of people trying surstromming, I'd likely pass on trying it, or even being in the room when someone else tries it. But trying new things is a big part of my life aspiration.

Only about half the times it rains where I live. But no more than that. I think. The first time I did a 100 mile, 2-day bike ride event it was raining off and on for the first day and a half. I was expecting to be miserable because of it, but it actually wasn't bad at all.
