@OwlInASack yeah, except there is no record of violence from antifa, just violence AGAINST antifa, despite the reputation the repugs are trying to build for them. there is even a meme circulating purporting to be an antifa manual (and it's disgusting of course) but there is no central antifa organization, no hierarchy, just local groups of people gathering to protest against (not beat up, not kill, not harm -- peacefully protest against) nazis. g

@OwlInASack there was a group of american jews making an organized protest against an ice facility holding children in rhode island of all places. an ice worker wanted to park and the protesters, sitting on the ground, were in his way. as he approached, they stood up and waved their arms and shouted. they did not attack the truck. the driver ploughed into them, injuring several (they were hospitalized). at THAT point people began banging on the truck, not before. the driver resigned. i think he should be prosecuted. g

genessa replies on Aug 16, 2019:
trouble is, if you are a person who likes to dance and you encounter a person who believes dancing is sinful, they ARE judging you by your actions, not your beliefs. now, you don't have to care how they judge you but their actions, in judging you, may range from frowning when they see you to running you over with a car, depending on what else they believe. so talking about judging people by their words and actions only works if everyone agrees which words and actions are good, and which are bad. we can decide for ourselves but we're still to an extent at the mercy of others, for whom we do not get to decide. a christian might agree with your statement -- everyone should be judged by their words and actions -- and not be at ALL on your page, sometimes to the detriment of your very well-being. g

@altschmerz i try to be diplomatic. people don't always respond to it. some people just get SO upset if anyone disagrees with them on any topic. i just had to block someone on fb (not, alas, an unusual occurrence) because... well two people actually. one was adamant that the public school system needed to be dismantled because it is brainwashing kids and they can learn on their own. my argument is that while a lot of education takes place outside the classroom, both the classroom's socialization effects and its presumed egalitarianism help kids and society, particularly the poor -- if you mom and dad are uneducated, how are they going to educate you at home? i said that the system needed to be fixed and i won't go into how here because this will become an even longer post but i think i was reasonable and i said not to throw the baby out with the bathwater. for my efforts i was called all sorts of mocking names, ending with "pathetic." that guy got blocked. then there was the woman who said that raw story was apparently a russian bot site because she read four stories from raw story dealing with racially motivated incidents (for example, white people calling the cops on black people who were minding their own business in public). many people explained to her that raw story was a reputable source of long standing and not in fact a russian bot site. she told one guy to break a bottle and shove it up his ass. i told her politely that her remark was uncalled for and got some vitriol thrown my way in response. she got -- can you guess? -- blocked. diplomacy only works with people who actually aren't hysterical to begin with, eh? g

i don't think so. i forget who said it, but, to paraphrase whoever it was, some people's minds are so open that thoughts enter and exit without stopping anywhere in between. a completely open mind is a mind that has not learned anything. discrimination is not a bad thing in and of itself. it is if you're discriminating against a race of people, or people of a religion, violating their rights, for example. it is a good thing if you discriminate between a nice slice of pie and a big pile of poop. don't eat the latter. i wouldn't call upon an open mind regarding that choice, either. g

@vertrauen i am not using any definition at all, nor am i defending the existence of free will. i am merely saying that i don't find any logic in this definition of it, regardless of whether or not i have my own, and i do not find the conclusion that there is no free will a logical extension of this explanation, regardless of whether there is or is not free will. the reason i do not have my own definition and have not drawn my own conclusion is that it's not a topic that i find relevant to my life. i don't care why i choose what i choose to wear; i am pretty certain it is often because i am trying to match it to the occasion and cross match it to comfort, plus whatever other factors i am conscious are involved, plus some i am not conscious are involved, but if i worry about it, i will miss my bus and then it won't matter what i am wearing, which, when i am not going out or having people in, is generally nothing. g

Who needs a savior when we have science and Hitchens wisdom?

We just need a savior for our science education, to make everyone appreciate what it can do for them personally and collectively.
genessa replies on Aug 11, 2019:
no, we don't. we just need the education itself. a savior for it will become an overall savior, because people like to elevate heros. it's the same way people were yelling for oprah to run for president. she is smart. she says smart things. every smart person who says smart things isn't automatically qualified to be president! and she's not the only one; every time ANYONE says anything clever, run for president! likewise if someone quite wonderfully advocated for science education and became a hero to some, that person would be elevated, perhaps to savior status. g

@Dreamrider why do you insist something started it? that is an unsupportable statement and i do not buy it. i never had to eliminate the christian god because i have never been christian; you sound as if you assume that's the only god that ever mattered! there are gazillions of fictional gods; every one of them is just as fictional as the next, and the christian god is just one of them. well, three of them lol plus saints! anyway, back to what started it. what will happen after the end? can you imagine? betcha can't because there may be an end to the universe as we know it, but then there will be something after, and when you talk about well, what created the universe (as we know it), and conclude it was a god, then you have to ask who created god. and if you say, well, god just always was, then you have to ask, then why can't the universe, not necessarily as we know it, but some kind of universe, always have been? why is one okay and the other unthinkable? so: no gods, no beginning and no end, although things do change form. g

no, this is a very good vet. her problem didn't make itself apparent to me in time to save her. she had badly infected ovaries but there are two ways that works: open, in which there is vaginal discharge and you can see that something is wrong and get help, and the closed kind, where nothing comes out and you just don't know. i took her in because i thought i felt a tumor, and while i was planning to take her in (i have no transportation; i had to wait for someone to give us a ride) i realized she was kind of barrel-chested. when i got her in the barrelishness had gone south, and the tumor thing was gone. it was probably an organ being pushed into an unusual position. she was extremely ill, even though she didn't seem so or act weird, when i took her in. there was only a 50 percent chance the surgery would be a success anyway. we took the chance. she seemed to be doing well but there was no way to know she was going to end up having a pulmonary embolism. her age, 15, was also a factor. g
