genessa replies on Jun 5, 2019:
okay here is what i wrote (within the past couple weeks): today was a weird day on many levels, but one had to do with religion. religion is not something that generally impacts my life at all. thrice a week my guy and i spend a few hours at an adult daycare which is run in conjunction with, while not being a part of, a jewish senior housing/rehab/assisted living/memory care facility. that facility provides the lunches for the daycare, so the lunches (and dishware) are kosher, but people of all beliefs and lack thereof attend (not to mention that the facility also does not discriminate). sometimes we go over to the facility for musical and other entertainment, and that tends to veer toward jewish (and russian) culture, because that's what most of the residents like. most of us are not residents (my guy and i are not). we celebrate the jewish holidays (loosely) but when st. patrick's day rolls around we do stuff related to that, too; we're easy. so it's not a religious experience. my guy and i are jewish. i'm an atheist; my jewishness is cultural. he is a believer, but only in a vague way. he knows less about judaism than i do lol. i think this was true BEFORE he was afflicted with alzheimer's, which is why we go to the daycare at all (he won't go regularly without me). we had a new client today,a gentleman in a wheelchair, apparently due to a stroke (i don't know how recent) and possibly epilepsy (he wasn't clear about that). i could tell he was somewhat mentally impaired, beyond the effects of the stroke. he was eager to converse and i indulged him, though he was repetitious and somewhat boring. if he's going to be a regular, i guess it wouldn't hurt for us to get to know one another. however, at one point he suddenly brought jesus into the mix, and continued to do so in a more and more pressing way, until i could not avoid telling him that i was not a person who worshiped jesus (i did not put it that way). he was aghast. i had to repeat myself because he couldn't believe i didn't worship jesus. i told him my guy and i were jewish. he wanted to know to whom, if we didn't believe in jesus, we prayed. "i don't pray," i said, "but richard does. he prays to god." the guy's jaw dropped further. i asked him, "haven't you ever met a jew before?" he shook his head very slowly. (this was odd because he had told me he'd visited israel. how do you visit israel and not meet a jew?) i reached out my hand and with a big smile said "how do you do!" he hesitated but then he smiled too. for a second, though, it looked as if he wasn't even going to take my hand! he did so, and smiled, and said "weird." that sort of ended the conversation, but later, when our music therapist came in and we were talking about elvis, the new guy piped up and said that he didn't call ...

@OwlInASack notice how my last question never got answered, supporting my observation that libertarians, when asked a question they cannot answer (which would be MOST reasonable questions) they change the subject. my question was "then if it is really sharing, why does the sharer expect something back?" note too how it's always all or nothing. you have to give away ALL your resources. there is no consideration of actual sharing. sharing, to a libertarian, means giving up, curling up and dying. they are the ultimate selfish creatures. g

@Happy_Killbot if it isn't voluntary it isn't sharing? who wrote THAT rule? certainly not any kindergarten teacher! why should the circumstances have an effect on what is fair? because if the sharer is sharing voluntarily, and without conditions, that is different from the sharer's making a trade or a bargain, that's why! it's very simple. so the ratio might be 1:0, or otherwise. the question is still impossible without the circumstances and even then it's subjective. g

genessa replies on May 24, 2019:
lol i doubt there is such a thing as an atheist daycare center. all the assisted living facilities seem to be connected with some religious institution or another. the christian ones are RELENTLESSLY christian. if you have to choose a facility, go with a jewish one. judaism doesn't ALLOW proselytizing! meanwhile, i don't know that the guy i met today was ever an atheist. i am pretty sure he never was one. back in the days when he could travel, his biggest thrill visiting israel was visiting jesus' cave or whatever that was. i have to say, the older i get, the more certain i am there are no gods, not that i have thought for a minute there might be, not since i was 15, anyway. i also don't know anyone who has become more religious, or religious again after not being religious, with age. i guess it also depends on how long one WAS religious. i never was, and then went full atheist at age 15, so i really don't have anything to which to revert. and thank you, yes, i think i lucked out! the staff is nice, we get field trips and lunch ranges from boring to really good lol. my guy and i are members of silver sneakers, paid for by our respective insurance companies, and the best pool in town is at the jewish community center in our town, so we go there a lot. that center shows free movies, and i mean pretty recent movies, not oldies, with free popcorn, and a nice lunch for three bucks. i told the new director of our daycare about it and now she takes us there once or twice a month for lunch and a movie! we have seen, in the last few months, the wife, can you ever forgive me, the green book, operation finale, the old man and the gun (i don't recommend it), the mule (i didn't even go to that one), and on the basis of sex. past films we saw there included the post and darkest hour. we're poor and not so mobile; without this, we would never be able to see films like that, and i LOVE movies! so i am glad the director took our suggestion and set it up for us to go regularly. i think we're going fishing soon, too lol. (i'd rather go horseback riding but i don't think the rest of the gang is up for it.) (and yeah, there's bingo too. well, you know, you can't have an old folks' party without bingo!) g

When i finally opened my eyes after 30 years and was able to look unbiased at the bible and the ...

the romans were the early-middle middleman in the deal. popes and then the british kings tweaked it even more. but before the romans, there was paul, and paul invented the beginnings of christianity as we know it, and if he had gone anywhere but to greece things might have worked out somewhat ...

@abyers1970 or unless you're a fanatic trying to recruit followers no matter what, and you're willing to bend every rule just to get folks on board! obviously i'm talking about paul; emperors, popes and kings had their own agendas lol. but i don't worry much about who had it right; nobody had it right. the books themselves, even viewed separately, cannot be taken at face value. then there's the whole god thing lol. g
Atheists make up a wide variety of independent thinkers.
Petter comments on May 14, 2019:
The only unifying factor is a rejection of religion, but even that is for differing reasons. It certainly isn't an ability to avoid being gullible, as witness the number of atheists who believe in homeopathy.
genessa replies on May 15, 2019:
not to be picky, but atheism isn't actually the rejection of religion. lots of people believe in a god of some sort but reject religion, and likewise i know at least one atheist who occasionally enjoys a trip to shul on the high holidays: me! we reject the idea of a deity. g

My question is sort of the same: how does one define a troll? Scammer seems easy enough - it usually comes down to money. Troll seems more subtle. I have gotten into a couple of heated discussions lately where the other party said I was a troll, thus ending the conversation. I confess to being a...

@amymcmxcii i think so too! g
is there a delay between posts and notifications?
RavenCT comments on May 14, 2019:
And remember if there were a lower level member responding in there - their post needs approval before it goes live - so it would have definitely taken time before an alert was generated - added another layer to the possible delay. I think what your surmise is exactly right. In fact I had ...

a troll is, more or less, someone whose purpose is not to present a point of view, or to convince anyone of it, or to find out others' points of view, but simply to stir up feelings and provoke emotional responses. there is another kind of troll too, these days, and that is someone (or some bot) employed by (for example) russia to spread misinformation on purpose, particularly to cause division within the liberal sensibility. that's a real thing too. g

Women won't have to chose once they're given family planning tools generously, unrestrictively. Why don't they see that by fighting "family planning"...because to them that's against "god's will"....they're also encouraging the desperate turn to abortion?

@Amisja haha! i have big thick eyebrows. i have a friend who used to be a little afraid of my eye brows because her family was full of thin-eyebrowed women. i once had a friend whose shoulders were very wide and i was astonished; everyone in my family had narrow shoulders. i once led a sheltered life.... g

@Amisja oh, i don't think they threatened her job or anything. i could be wrong. i think when she says they "made"her do it, it means they convinced her to do it. tv lights really do bleach out one's features. if you're in a drama and you want to look as if you're not wearing any makeup. you have to be made up to look that way. if you do it by just not wearing any makeup, you look as if you're made up as a ghost! g
