We do have some control over our own realities - please.

keyword here is SOME. but look at the cartoon. he hasn't got control over his reality. he's delusional. we can sometimes choose with whom to hang out, where to live, what to eat (and sometimes we can't) but we can't function properly if most of our experience relies on pretense. not letting ...

that just wouldn't happen. i wouldn't fall in love with someone who was very religious. that person would seem way too alien to me. g
genessa replies on Jan 15, 2019:
@DavidLaDeau that could happen i suppose. on the other hand, my guy, while not religious, does believe in some kind of god (he won't say what). we're jewish. i, an atheist, know more about judaism than he does, even though i was raised quite secularly and he was raised reform but not as secularly as i. so if he suddenly became quite religious it would doubtless be judaism to which he turned, and that wouldn't bother me unless he expected me to keep a kosher house or something. religious jews don't talk about religion all day long, and they don't proselytize, and they don't tell everyone else they're wrong or hellbound, so while it would definitely be weird, it wouldn't be as obnoxious as, say, my being in love with someone who suddenly became an evangelical christian. g

@Fernapple just as the boobies in the galapagos evolved differently on different islands, life could go in bizarre directions if the environment even required any kind of evolution at all that we would recognize. bacteria that are doing just fine exactly as they are have no likelihood of evolution except by truly random mutation (as opposed to random mutation that survives according to adaptation and thus seems to have a direction -- that's confusing cause and effect but we humans do that all the time!) so all the bacteria could turn blue for no discernible reason, instead of, say, clumping together to fight some enemy and inadvertently, generations and eons down the road, becoming more complex organisms, or just becoming very big and eating up the competition and then dying off because it ate up the competition... and so on. of course then we could come along and either kill them all with a single breath or carry them home and kill off our entire planet (except for the cockroaches; i don't think anything will ever defeat them). g

@jerry99 he didn't cost her the election. he made a comment that was uncalled for, but it wasn't anything like grabbing pussy. he did not publicize the fact that the fbi had found more emails and had to look at them; he sent a PRIVATE letter to the committee that had interrogated him, trying desperately to get him to diss hillary (he refused) and jason chaffetz released it (illegally) to the media. the comment is on comey but the letter is on chaffetz and even THAT did not cost hillary the election; she won the popular vote, remember. so who was affected by the comment? a hell of a lot fewer folks than were affected by the pussy-grabbing. so no, comey did not cost hillary the election. the russians did. g

@Ungod just because two words are listed as synonyms that does not mean they have the precise same definition or application and you probably KNOW that, even though you posted twice as if you did not know it. your masturbation comment was uncalled for and unappreciated. and you asked for sources, in all caps even, and yet had nothing whatsoever to say about the ones i provided. this leads me to wonder two things: 1. why do you have to make three or four posts to say one thing? and 2. why am i even talking to you if you're going to be snarky, and you ARE being snarky. i have nothing further to say to you and won't be reading your gazillion (some repetitive, all wrong) response posts any longer. g p.s. ... except to say that the definition of mine = religion, yours = cult is incorrect, and i don't know anyone, not even evangelicals, who think that way. it's more like mine = religion, yours = mythology. i am clarifying this for others who may be reading this, since you will find some way to twist that around.

@Ungod i looked up "masturbation" in a dictionary when i was about 13. the definition was "self-abuse." i did not find it helpful. you asked for sources. there are so many it is hard to select just a few, but i have nonetheless done so, and i've managed to do so in just one post. http://cultresearch.org/what-makes-a-cult/ theguardian and from that: Here are 10 warning signs of a potentially unsafe group or leader. • Absolute authoritarianism without meaningful accountability. • No tolerance for questions or critical inquiry. • No meaningful financial disclosure regarding budget or expenses, such as an independently audited financial statement. • Unreasonable fear about the outside world, such as impending catastrophe, evil conspiracies and persecutions. • There is no legitimate reason to leave, former followers are always wrong in leaving, negative or even evil. • Former members often relate the same stories of abuse and reflect a similar pattern of grievances. • There are records, books, news articles, or broadcast reports that document the abuses of the group/leader. • Followers feel they can never be "good enough". • The group/leader is always right. • The group/leader is the exclusive means of knowing "truth" or receiving validation, no other process of discovery is really acceptable or credible. all forms of judaism save the ultra-orthodox and chassidim do NOT fit this description, and even then, the "do not question" and "never good enough" bits definitely do not apply. i'm pretty sure buddhism doesn't either. i don't know anything about druids. i do know christians who do not fit the description (and alas i know some who do). https://www.earwolf.com/episode/what-makes-a-cult-a-cult-with-dr-natalie-feinblatt/ https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/spycatcher/201208/dangerous-cult-leaders g

genessa replies on Jan 11, 2019:
@Ungod that simply is not true. "cult" has its own meaning and you can make up a new one that pleases you better but then we won't be speaking the same language. my description in my original post above is accurate. it's not just connotation, and it's not just acceptability, which is not actually part of the definition. cult and religion do NOT have the exact same denotation. they do not mean the same thing. religions may resemble cults, and cults may make claims to be religions, but they are not the same thing, and it's not about connotation. your being called the antichrist has no bearing on the definitions of the words. g

genessa replies on Jan 10, 2019:
@Fernapple lol okay... thanks for saying so! i will quibble minorly with even the "can" but because it's not the atheism that leads to higher consciousness even if the latter occurs; the same thing may have caused both, but it's not a chain, right? now i've been up since 4:20 this morning, having gone to bed at 2:30, and it's just after 11 now, so i think i want to indulge in some UNconsciousness now! g
