I still have some that I bought back in 1973, do you still have your old Tupperware?
genessa comments on Oct 6, 2018:
not i! i'll tell you what, though: when i finish up a tub of butter spread, i don't throw away the tub. it's great for leftovers, cut-up fruit, just about anything, frozen, refrigerated or room-temperature (like flour or noodles or lentils). why buy it when you already have something just as good? the writing on it is offensive? tupperware was ugly to start with lol g

I miss Saturday morning coffee time in bed the most. My singleness is not very fulfilling today.
genessa comments on Oct 6, 2018:
i am in self-imposed loneliness right now because i can't even kiss my guy. he is getting over a nasty cold and he ever so kindly gave it to me, and i have it worse than he ever did! we don't want to pass these germs back and forth. coffee wouldn't do me any good right now... i need him to learn to cook so he can make me breakfast! i've had nothing but a few pretzels (for the salt, for my throat) for the last 24 hours. i wonder if he could manage some fried eggs? anyway sorry you're lonely. but think of all the germs you're escaping! g

I've often heard the phrase 'I'd rather be lucky than good at something'.
genessa comments on Oct 6, 2018:
i have never heard that, and i sure wouldn't hear it from my own lips. but one makes one's own luck, to an extent. yeah you can be unlucky and be at a concert, for example where suddenly there is a shooter -- you can hardly be expected to be able to predict that and be blamed for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but on the other hand, one expression i have heard is "opportunity only knocks once," meaning you have to be AWARE of your luck and take advantage of it, or it's meaningless. that means being good at something, even if what you're good at is recognizing opportunity. g

genessa comments on Oct 6, 2018:
you haven't seen the arguments against that? i've MADE the arguments against that. one doesn't need a big inconsistent fat book to be moral. morality comes from within. a lawbook isn't a morality book. there may be coinciding principles but that doesn't make them the same thing. g
Having to explain, most of my life, why being bi doesn't mean I cheat and why I post that I am ...
genessa comments on Oct 6, 2018:
indeed! i have a friend who is bi, and he ended up staying with his wife because -- big shock -- he actually LOVES her. they have two kids and have grown old together, though not as old as i, mwahahaha, as i'll always be a couple of years ahead. so he falls in love with the actor instead of the actress in a movie; that's not cheating! if one is straight and attracted to the opposite sex, does that mean one goes about screwing all members of the opposite sex? one makes one's choice, right? why should it be different for anyone who has a wider range of potential targets (so to speak)? people want to define each other in the oddest ways, to make sure there is always "the other." i suppose it's disappointing for some folks to find out that most people are more the same than they are different. g
FACEBOOK CRAPOLA - My FB feed is filled with pro-Xian, pro-Trump, right wing rhetoric.
genessa comments on Oct 6, 2018:
i don't know. where DID you get them? from the looks of your comment, you got yours at least partly the way i got mine. we're both writers and want as many readers as possible; my facebook page is totally public. i also used to play some facebook games (the two games i still play are not facebook games) and we all needed a fat friends list to play properly. some of my game friends turned out to be highly compatible, and others turned out t be racists or superchristians.... feh! we have made adjustments over the years. if i see racist crap on my page, that "friend" gets unfriended. if someone is a republican, that's not reason enough to unfriend all by itself, but i they turn to namecalling, out they go. it works out, for the most part. that doesn't mean my facebook feed is in a liberal bubble -- far from it. it just means i don't have to scroll through much vitriol aimed at me, for example. g

genessa comments on Oct 6, 2018:
he is a horrible necessity. i wish he would get his ass primaried, but the fact is, he was not primaried; he won his primary. so now we most desperately need a blue majority. what's the difference, you might ask, since he's going to vote with the repugs anyway. the difference is in how the senate itself will behave with a blue majority. the difference will be in what there is to vote on, and how much info the senators get about each bill instead of voting blind. a blue senate could and would order a REAL fbi investigation, or a real senate investigation, and write real bills. people like manchin wouldn't be put in charge of committees. he's just be a blue tushie in a seat that needs to be blue. did i mention horrible necessity? maybe the alternative, an actual republican from west virginia, would not make a difference in terms of that one vote, but the blue tushie would make a WORLD of difference. only in a red senate could manchin's bad votes be so devastating. g

genessa comments on Oct 5, 2018:
sorry, i believed in personal god until i was 15 but was not surrounded by particularly religious people, least of all my family, secular jews. i still got pennies thrown at me for being jewish; no one knew or cared that i was an atheist; no one asked. i didn't announce one way or another when job-seeking, later, but was denied some jobs for being jewish. only one job was affected by my being an atheist, and the boss really shouldn't have asked. i answered honestly. so... no trauma, really. i'd already gotten beaten up and called names and chased around for being jewish BEFORE i realized there were no gods, and i wasn't religious then; all i had to do was have a jewish name and i got dissed for that. being an atheist? online is where i take shit for it, but only from strangers, and who cares about that? g

genessa comments on Oct 5, 2018:
when i was eight i read my dad's college psych texts. mom got kind of worried so she got me a nancy drew book, the secret of larkspur lane. from this book i learned: 1. amber is both a substance and a color, 2. some people believe in reincarnation, 3. larkspur is a blue flower, 4. ned nickerson is a ridiculous name and a useless character and 5. it is annoying when an author constantly picks on one of nancy's friends for being fat. that was the only nancy drew book i ever read. g

Scammers! Just a PSA that a common scam I've encountered on POF recently happened here.
genessa comments on Oct 5, 2018:
i've only been approached by one scammer here, not military-claiming and didn't get far enough to ask for money. he asked me to tell him all about myself. i found that odd and annoying, especially since my profile clearly says i am here for the community, when asked what i was up to i said i was cooking dinner for my guy, and that i mentioned after he persisted that i was in a relationship. but the big thing wasn't his ignoring those things. it was the whole idea that someone on social media, where i am active in posting and not shy about what i think and feel, should want me to make a little list for them of what i think and feel. instant friendship, eh? that just doesn't happen. so i told him in no uncertain terms how weird that was, and reiterated that i have a guy -- so he responded by saying he wanted to be my very close friend. that's when let him have it. same scam, different details. the military version is one of many. and yes, his english was broken. he CLAIMED to be from, or at least in, tennessee, which last time i looked was in the united states lol g
Why do we identify with a political party because both are strange
genessa comments on Oct 5, 2018:
neither of your answers suits me, and your question is a bit on the loaded side. anyway we only have one major political party. we also have a criminal organization, currently in power. my assessment has nothing to do with tribalism, nothing to do with who is "correct" and nothing to do with strangeness. it has to do with what each party, on the whole, and most of its representatives, believes in and works for. those who think both parties are the same have not been paying attention... or have been paying attention to propaganda. g

Should prostitution be legal?
genessa comments on Oct 5, 2018:
yes of course it should. the fact that it reflects the objectification of women (and men, in the case of male prostitution) is not a reason to keep it criminalized. some iterations of marriage do that; all advertising does that. they're not illegal. keeping prostitution criminalized means keeping its control in the hands of criminals, and keeping it more objectifying than it has to be. at least let women be in control of what they do with their own bodies, and meanwhile we can work on education that might change people's attitudes about who is what. there will be less sexually transmitted disease, less human trafficking, less interest on the part of criminals, less blackmail. everything we (or a number of us) don't approve of, for a variety of reasons, doesn't have to be a crime. g

the only time that ever happened to me i said "i agree with mark twain, who said (i approximate here) 'i am glad god does not exist, for if he exists, surely he is a malign thug.'" it didn't go over well. i was young. i should have said "it is against the law to ask me that" because this was my boss asking. i don't know if it is or was against the law for a coworker to ask in casual conversation, so maybe "that is personal" would be the best answer if you don't feel like sharing. g

genessa comments on Oct 4, 2018:
i guess so! look, i met a guy who believed that everything in the universe is a conspiracy, primary among them on his list the moon landing. he had a nice home with a nice wife and kids, and he was kindly, if rather quiet, and as far as i am concerned totally insane, on that one little basis. i don't think his wife, who was my friend at the time, believed what he did. she laughed it off. i am not sure i could laugh such things off and your experience strikes me as par for the course, but par for the course is "people are strange." g

genessa comments on Oct 4, 2018:
i love being alone, though not all the time. i like being with people too, and i like being with my guy... love being with him, but you know what? i still need my alone time too. now it IS different having him. most of my life i was alone whether i wanted to be alone or not. i had boyfriends sometimes, but lived alone, never was in love, nor was anyone in love with me. the past 18 years (and i am 66 and a half now) have been quite different. it was an adjustment, when we finally began to live together. even spending so much time together was an adjustment. i do love my alone time! only for someone i love would i give that up... and i still tell him when i want to be alone. g
Have you stopped watching a TV show, or listening to a musician due to their political beliefs?
genessa comments on Oct 4, 2018:
oddly no. for the most part, those who not only hold different views from mine but hold them vehemently, do not attract me to start with, whether i know those views or not. the exception would be bill cosby. i never cared about his sitcom; i don't like sitcoms. but i loved i spy, and i used his english language teaching materials when i taught english as a second language. his betrayal of humanity surprised me (though much earlier than the general public, i must say -- i found out in 1996) and saddened me. i think i can still watch i spy, though. it isn't usually on, so it's a moot point at the moment. g

The existing/non existing Universe
genessa comments on Oct 3, 2018:
yeah. none of that is precisely what scientists are currently thinking. no one talks about the expanding wave of existence being time passing. they're talking about space-time, and some are thinking the big bang wasn't the beginning, that something happened before it. and there is no such thing as the present. as soon as you've noticed it, it's the past. exception: the dentist's office. that's one big long present. g
Who all likes this drink? I remember my mother drink it back in the day.
genessa comments on Oct 3, 2018:
ewww not me! i don't drink pop anyway but when i did, it sure wasn't tab. i favored ginger beer. but i have not drunk pop for years and the last time i did, it was for medicinal purposes and turned out badly. i was always nauseated so i asked my guy to bring me some ginger ale (ginger beer is hard to get). he did. it relieved the nausea, but then it would come back full force, so i'd drink more ginger ale. i wasn't used to drinking pop but i hated the nausea. when i finally got to see my doc and get a blood test, she turned to me and said "you have diabetes, my dear!" that was the last time i had ANY pop. it had been years and years before that anyway. as i say, i only drank it that one short period of time to relieve the nausea, and it didn't cause the diabetes. it sure exacerbated it! g

Kitten escapes cage to play with puppy. [youtu.be]
genessa comments on Oct 3, 2018:
when our now-late sheltie, sarah, was a puppy, our cat, penny, had her second litter, and she was so neurotic about protecting them that we put sarah in a big cage when the kittens were downstairs. they wanted to go in and play with her, and there was much communicating between the thin bars. when they were big enough, sarah had the run of the house again and the kittens were her besties. now the two who loved her best, and she herself, are gone. we have a young dog, ramona, who is much smaller than a sheltie, and somewhat smaller than the father of those kittens, tevye. he's 15 now, and his surviving kids are 14. penny is 16 and a half. the dog will be two this month, and she loves tevye because he puts his arm around her and kisses her. she goes to him and begs for it. she even lets him sleep in her bed -- sometimes with her, sometimes alone, sometimes with his younger daughter, kuma. he has ramona trained! cats and dogs don't have to be enemies :-)) g

"Religion is a crutch for the weak.
genessa comments on Oct 3, 2018:
it is easy to see things all black and white, but people have been known to compartmentalize. some people are brilliant in some areas and idiots in others. not all people who believe in a god or gods are idiots. they do this one idiotic thing, but that doesn't mean they are weak all over, or even weak; they may have other reasons. i use frank zappa as an example; i used it once before elsewhere and the response that he was an idiot. the respondent didn't get it at all. this is the thing: frank zappa was brilliant. he really was. but regarding cigarettes he was an idiot. he didn't just say oh i know it causes cancer and heart disease and all that but i can't help it. no. instead, he was convinced that cigarettes were totally harmless, right up to the moment they killed him. stupid! so does that negate all the brilliance? same with religion. now, we know lots of weakminded, idiotic religionists, but that doesn't mean everyone who believes in a god is an idiot. they're just idiots about THAT. g

marriage happens for many reasons, some better than others, and by "better" i mean better for the individuals involved. some marry to give their children a name and legal legitimacy. some marry because they've been raised to think that this is the "happily ever after" they've been taught their whole lives to seek. others marry because they belong to a religion that says this is how to live. but some people marry because without being married it is more difficult to have legal standing with regard to the other person, because hospital staff sometimes won't give you any information about the other person without looking up to see if your name is on a permission list, or make decisions about that person if necessary, because if the other person dies social security and the military and a whole host of other entities won't honor spouse benefits... lots of legal, financial stuff. and some people get married because they like the pretty wedding ceremony and want the nice prezzies. g

There once was a time when all people believed in God and the church ruled.

nope. not all. not by any means all. but yes, religious belief, or at least its appearance, was enforced in the dark ages. i think we're veering into another dark age. g
After coming into contact with a religious man I always feel I must wash my hands.

We keep on being told that religion, whatever its imperfections, at least instills morality.

ELIZABETH WARREN FOR PREZ?
genessa comments on Oct 2, 2018:
i cannot begin to predict. we may have a primary full of candidates or only two or three, and warren may or may not be among them. surely someone we haven't yet met will be, too. whoever wins the democratic primary has my vote, but right now i'm concentrating on 2018. g

i don't hear much longing for the good ol' days from anyone who isn't also deluded in other, even more important ways (like being bigots, thinking trump is a real president and thinking democrats eat christian babies for lunch, which is ridiculous; they're obviously only dinner entrées).
Just a thought. Donald Trump and the Bible are similar in so many ways. Agree or Disagree?
genessa comments on Oct 2, 2018:
nope. the bible is a work of fiction. the fact that people lie about it or take it for true isn't the bible's fault. people did the best they could at the time. (i am referring to the jewish bible. i cannot speak about the christian bible as i am not so familiar with it, never having been christian or interested enough to explore it.) trump, on the other hand, is a liar, himself, and an ill-tempered, ignorant, illiterate one at that. trump couldn't even get THROUGH a bible, or even a better book. g

it was silly. i was raised in a secular jewish household. we didn't really talk about religion, though sometimes we talked about jewishness, as in ethnic identity (a phrase that didn't exist yet). my folks didn't like rock n roll and decided that long-haired boys were dirty and rebellious. i discovered that this wasn't necessarily so and decided that if i'd been wrong to accept that without question, there might be other beliefs/opinions i held that weren't true either. i examined everything i held as true and god went right out the window. easy peasy. no trauma, though a bit of a surprise. i was 15. g

silly, eh? "what's your sign" is a common pickup line; it's odd when it turns out to be a dealbreaker. but what's ghosted? (i'm not in the dating scene, so if it's a term relating to that, i am ignorant!) g

i just checked your profile. nice enough profile except that you really can't expect people to look you up in the phone book and call you for no reason -- post, make yourself known so people want to get to know you! in addition, it's fine that you're religious. everyone is welcome here. however, realistically, you can't really expect a whole lot of women to fall at your feet (for a variety of reasons but chiefly for this one) from a site that is pointedly for the irreligious. g

Plagiarism, anyone?
genessa comments on Oct 2, 2018:
misattributing a quotation isn't plagiarism. it's stupid and can so easily be checked, but it's not plagiarism -- unless you're misattributing it to yourself of course! plagiarism is in fact a serious problem but that's not what this poll is about, right? i've written about this before and the gist of what i think is that 1. you can and should check it before you post it; it IS important, and 2. even if the quotation isn't being attributed to the pictured party, it should at least jibe with the known ideas/feelings/position of the pictured party. it should also be clear WHETHER the words are being attributed or just reflective of this ideas/feelings/positions (for example, the gene wilder as willie wonke memes and the most interesting man in the world memes -- no one thinks those guys are really saying those things, but if the memes say something that don't FIT with those images, it's not just weird, it's dishonest). g
So I told my mom this past weekend that I am Agnostic.

when i realized, at age 15, there were no gods, it didn't even occur to me to mention it to my parents. i didn't think they'd be interested. i wasn't afraid or nervous; it just never crossed my mind. decades later, someone asked me what my parents believed and i realized that i had no idea! so i called them long distance and asked them. they were surprised, a little annoyed that i was spending the money to ask them such a silly question, and unsure of their own answers. they hadn't given it much thought. g
Homosexuality?
genessa comments on Oct 2, 2018:
it is none of those things. it is likely mostly genetic. it is not something that should have a judgment attached to it; it just is what it is. humans are not alone in being sexually diverse. it's nobody's business who loves whom, and it's even kind of silly to try to find out where it comes from, as if it's a disease. it's not. furthermore, it doesn't really matter how we see it. it is what it is regardless of how someone sees it. it's like asking what you think of people's being tall, or short-waisted, or born in canada. it's a nonissue! g
Horoscopes....does yours fit you? ?
