@Ggall002 well, they're dead now, but to tell you the truth, i was raised secularly and they never discussed religion. there was culture of course. we went to bar mitzvahs and weddings and funerals. we didn't go to shul. i think when i was 14 and decided to find out what it was all about and began to go to shul, they were slightly amused, but they never tried to stop (or encourage) me. a year later i was an atheist and i haven't looked back, but i was not rebelling against religion. i still find judaism interesting and some bits of it even cool. not the god bit of course lol. anyway, when i grew up and left home and was three thousand miles from my parents, someone asked me if my folks believed in god. i couldn't answer. i had no idea! so i called long distance and asked. the conversation went something like this: mom: hello? me: hi mom. do you believe in god? mom: you called long distance to ask me THAT? me: yep. do you? mom: i don't know. let me think. hmm. i think i do. me: okay. put dad on. dad: hello? me: hi dad. do you believe in god? dad: you called long distance to ask me THAT? me: yep. do you? dad: i... i think i don't. me: okay. thanks dad, dad: is everything okay? me: yep talk to you later! love you! dad: love you. bye. that's how important religion was in my family! and when i became an atheist, it never even occurred to me to mention it to them. i didn't think they'd be interested. i mean i just didn't give it any thought at all. if they'd asked, which they never did, i'd have told them. i doubt they'd have been upset. g

@Paracosm that much is so, though i think they already own bits of it. it's quite complex. i've looked it up in the past to counter claims some people have made regarding who owns and doesn't own fox news. you'd think it'd be easy but if you look up everything written about it, you will come to the conclusion that fox and disney and some other folks all own each other, and who's on first and what's on second and i don't know's on third! g

if this is true, then the big question would be are they going to keep the same policies. but i don't think it's true. there are parts of it owned by different entities and disney is one of them, so it is unlikely on that basis that disney stops advertising on fox, but fox isn't going to go under the disney umbrella. g

@David_Cooper using that comparison in order to dismiss antisemitism is inappropriate. every damned time someone says "there is antisemitism" (referring NOT to israel but to something like pittsburgh, or the outcry against george soros, or anything steve bannon or stephen miller ever said) and someone ELSE says "what about israel" it's inappropriate, because it's changing the damned subject and making false conflations. i mentioned israel because of this, NOT because of anything to do with israel itself, or that situation. i wasn't defending israel's policies, which are awful, although i did go so far as to defend israel's right to exist. g

as far as I remember from history lessons - Jews were given a portion of palestinian land by the three major powers - and the point is that they want to expand so are basically at war with Palestine an unfair fight because they have all the weapons and have pulled down the palestinians ancient ...

actually that history lessons is only partly correct. the land was not held by the palestinians; it was held by the british. its residents already included arabs and jews. it was a very large parcel of land. the british divided it up into two bits, one huge bit, most of which was then called transjorda, and set it aside for arabs, and one tiny bit, and set it aside for jews. the arabs complained so the brits took a ltitle more away from the tiny bit and added it to the large bit. when the state of israel was formed, the jews told the arabs living there they could stay and be part of the new land and have full civil rights, but the surrounding arab nations told the israeli arabs that they were about to be murdered by the jews, that they should flee immediately. many did, and they fled into the larger bit of land set aside for them, now called jordan. the jordanians REJECTED the fleeing arabs, who now found themselves homeless. meanwhile, the ones who stayed behind became israeli citizens. some even serve in the knesset. what the current israeli administration is doing is awful. it does not in any way justify the concept that israel should cease to exist and the jews therein be driven into the sea. g

The Pittsburgh attack was domestic terrorism plain and simple. Trump is reluctant to declare it as such because he might offend some of his support base. This is a hidden encouragement for others to do bad things and it is also why we must clip Trump's wings and balance power. Let's get some sanity ...

no. in judaism, if you're an atheist, you can still be a jew. if you don't keep kosher you're still a jew. if you take on another god, you're an apostate and no longer a jew. if you never were a jew and you are a messianist and call yourself a rabbi, good luck to you, but you are not a ...

@Bobby9 yes i know about the trinity. since in judaism there is no trinity, that explanation doesn't fly in that context. no matter how christians may justify having more than one god as having only one god with three aspects, from the jewish point of view, that's taking on another god. since jews get to define who's a jew, that makes someone who take son jesus NOT a jew. it's quite simple. we're not talking about what anyone thinks about anything except who is or isn't a jew. g
