These were the dugout pits near the San Jacinto River where the acid waste from oil refining were dumped. Once they were abandoned, the acid formed a rubber like skin over an inch thick and the pits filled with about 6-8 feet of water. We'd go swimming in them, and bounce off the bottom like it was a trampoline. Some of the older kids would chew the tar like rubber for the high they got, and most ended up with cancers later in life. The oil patch was dangerous even for those that didn't work in it. These pits were less than a quarter mile to the river and were frequently flooded .

@SpikeTalon I think that we agree more than we disagree. Monopolies can, do and must exist under all economic systems for efficiency. It would be cost prohibitive to have separate power lines, water lines, and sewer lines for instance. Those are natural monopolies, and should either be government owned or closely controlled to stop abuse. The other non natural monopolies must be highly regulated, so that they don't use their power to keep other smaller entities from entering the marketplace. I would say the root problem is greed, by the ones at the top be they corporate or government. I think vigorous enforcement of ethics and lobbying laws along with term limits for judges, congress members, and lobbyist. Punishments for accepting or offering bribes, gifts, or gratuities over a certain $$ amount from anyone outside your family . Apply this law to all relatives that live in the same household. As far as journalism goes, the first time I got a piece back from my editor, I thought he had bled on the page there were so many red marks on it. It took 4 rewrites before it was ready for publication. I was used to public speaking, but print communication is inverted in that you try to present your most important point in the first sentence, then flesh it out, while in public speaking, you build the body before the reveal.

@SpikeTalon I would disagree with you on a few points, capitalism is not a political system, it is an economic system, which I support as long as it is well regulated. The natural evolution of capitalism is monopolies as the capital crowds out all the smaller competitors. But yes one who supports such a system can be considered one. Both pure capitalism and socialism have proven to be abject failures, so I support neither. I did not say all capitalist, just the ones that want to use their monies to control the government for their benefit. Since they are the largest recipients of welfare, capitalists have indeed become dependent on it. Take away the corporate subsidies and they would scream until the rivers ran red. Take away patents and copyrights from corporations and only allow individuals to own them . The best government program to get people out of poverty, which returned $8 for every dollar invested was the GI Bill. @pamagain, @Lizard_of_Ahaz From reading about the Danbury Federal prison, it looks like the unit is set up with 2 man dorm type cells with doors. The pod has a common shower and each cell has the prison style toilet/sink. He can use a phone, but only to preapproved numbers, no incoming calls. He will have it almost as cushy as if he were in a camp. But it is still prison. If he gets convicted in NY state court, as a repeat offender he will not be in nearly as nice a place.

Because that is our system, first past the post voting will always lead to binary choices. The system has been evolving, and this is just its latest evolution. There are lots of things wrong with the system, but changing it is time consuming and slow, and like anything, change can bring some undesired results, that may not be apparent for several cycles. Each party has their own rules for selecting their nominee, and each state has its own timing and method that can be changed anytime the legislature is in session or called into special session. We have 57 different sets of rules for the states and territories, plus the party rules. Add into the mix where covid severely restricted our ability to vet our choices and here we are.

Senators normally get a pass for 4 years, then the scrutiny begins in the last trimester. Sennama and Manchin got a bad rap since they voted with the party 95-98% of the time. They just held out on a few key issues. They were still 20 points better than any republican. Fetterman is still well liked by his colleagues, so I don't see this as too harmful. I still have a supply of N95 masks that I wear when I go to the VA or other hospital appointments. They provide surgical masks, but I'd prefer to bring my own. It was not worth trying to explain to people the difference between particles and aerosol particles and the ability for mask to stop them. Most gun owners would be hard pressed to actually use their gun in self defense if it were necessary. One of the many reasons I don't carry.

Nixon borrowed from the SS fund and used the monies to prop up the stock market. That is the reason that SS can only invest in treasuries. He gave the Wall Street banks IRAs to make up for the lost revenue as well as legalizing the trading and possession of gold. eliminating SS would have next to zero effect on the debt. there is a net of $41 billion difference between income and outgo. Bush pulled funds from the SS trust fund to fund tax cuts and the Iraq war. So it is not social security adding to the debt, but the republican war machine, just deferred. All of your possible impact are can/may, not do. There does need to be a change made to SS, but the trust fund was scheduled to be depleted by 2036 roughly 100 years after the parents of the baby boomers were born. We paid for our parents retirement and our own, Expand all earned income to SS tax and the fund should never deplete. The answer to demographic shifts is the same as it has always been allow enough qualified immigration of working age persons to prop up the numbers. As far as SS running a deficit since 2010, that was planned, in 1980. There had been a multi year bi-partisan commission that made proposals to postpone any major problems to 40-50 years in the future when there would be less political strife (lol). The 1983 SS act would fit into that 50 year deferment perfectly.

@SpikeTalon You missed my point on SS, its spending and allocated taxes are equal, it does not now nor has ever contributed to the national debt, in fact the trust fund still has $2.9Trillion in reserve. The WPA and CCC were both intended as short term make work programs while the PWA was intended as a long term solution to government projects. You are right that there were good and bad that came out of the New Deal. In the case of the interstate system, it was a public private partnership, but the government did the master planning , much like current major maintenance on roads.

@SpikeTalon As far as the new Deal goes, i think we still get power from the Bonneville dam and fly out of Lagardia Airport as well as the millions of trees that were planted across our country, The WPA, PWA, CCC, all gave us long term projects that we still enjoy today. One is across the street from me. When they updated it for erosion control, the 80 year old government built facilities had not significantly deteriorated, but within 2 years our fine private contractor built facilities had to have major repairs. Not a reqlly good use of funds, I'd say.

(Universities, USHS, CDC, etc) We had one of the highest levels of care in the world and exported it to the world. Today we have to import doctors from Asia, Africa, and South America. Free market healthcare lead to $25,000 interferon a drug that costs a few hundred to make, $2000 insulin a drug that costs <$5 to make, $300 inhalers another drug combo that costs <$5 to make. Tell me again how a totally free market in a basic necessity makes any sense. When I say the wealthy should pay there fair share, the corporations are the wealthy. The Tax reform act of 1986 lowered the top tax rate from 50 to 28 and RAISED the lowest tax rate from 11 to 15. It also created more loopholes than swiss cheese. Retirement plans that previously received preferential tax treatment were fully taxed and Social Security was taxed for the first time ever to pay for the rich getting their tax breaks. Nothing short of a Tax rewrite on the scale of the 1954 IRC would correct all of the deficiencies of the current tax code
