I probably needed to rethink the cryptic song reference"when I'm 64", but I think that will be the last birthday with a specific song title. The song came out not too long after the don't trust anyone over 30 craze.

@Sirena the worst part is that there are logistics plans that should have been implemented that could have eliminated much of the suffering, but this administration didn't see the need to help. Bush did a similar thing to New Orleans. It makes me angry that people believe that having people with no experience in government will do well in government. That is how you end up with disasters made worse by inept assholes.

glennlab replies on Sep 11, 2018:
@Boogey It is so convoluted at this point. The reality is that if everything she has said so far is true, she committed home invasion and killed the resident. They still haven't submitted it to a grand jury, so there could still be murder or other serious charges. The current DA is up for election in November, she is a black republican that was one of the most incompetent judges in Dallas County so she will try anything to get sympathy (it's complicated) Dallas is a democratic county in a very red state, but she wants to use her blackness to curry favor in the black community , but anything she does to openly curry favor in the black community will alienate her republican base. The police transferred the case to the Texas Rangers who conduct very thorough investigations and have minimal leaks, so most information coming out has not been vetted. While I don't believe her story, I'm going to wait for the full story to come out. I have sources at city hall that are telling me that there will be more coming out and wait.

glennlab replies on Sep 11, 2018:
The DA who was appointed was a defeated inept district judge, is now in an uphill race to try to keep her seat. She is a republican running in a very democratic county, so if she prosecutes the white cop, she loses a lot of her republican base, if she doesn't, she energizes the black vote. From a purely political standpoint, I am going to sit back and just watch. There is so much to this case that keeps changing hour by hour that you need a scorecard.

All but 2 are pretty tame now and the numbers are going down. They wander into the park across the street and get abducted. They must like it since none have come back. They're all notched, so the city won't euthanize them if they are turned in.

glennlab replies on Sep 10, 2018:
I'm a little too far north to get very much fruit. Most of the fruits are quarter size, you can't see them until they get ripe, they from camo green to bright yellow. You end up with about a teaspoon of fruit in each one. Farther south where I grew up, the fruit is small orange size with large fleshy seeds. So thew answer is yes and no.

@EdEarl Fennel, dill, and milhweed are not that tasty to deer which is probably why the butterflies have adapted to it as well as concentrating the poison to keep the birds from eating them.

glennlab replies on Sep 10, 2018:
There are a lot of different types of sulphurs that present as white, I never worry about which ones I attract, I put stuff out for several different types. Fennel and dill work for swallow tails. I buy the fennel seeds in bulk at WINCO, they aren't tested for germination like ag seeds, but there is better than 50% sprout rate and they are a ton cheaper. The flowers work for pretty much any butterfly, but only certain host plants for new butterflies. My rule of thumb, is cheap, easy to grown, low maintenance.

How did cutting down the tree improve this little plot of land?
glennlab replies on Sep 10, 2018:
@Mike1947 Southern magnolias will live over 1000 years, live oaks and cypress are also in this life age group. This particular tree succumbed to disease at a very young age (50-60). The number of trees that actually reach the ancient age are rare.

@btroje I just looked it up and was surprised, I'm going to try to work my schedule for a few hour detour on either this or my next trip.

@btroje I wasn't aware of hot springs in the area, I'm a hot water nut. I'm heading out that way again in early October.
I can't believe that Les Moonves is retiring and they're gonna give him 100 million severance.
glennlab comments on Sep 10, 2018:
Well Les was one of the movers behind the free billion dollar free media giveaway to Trump, so the good old boys don't want to upset the applecart, assholes, everyone of them.

@Boogey I agree completely. Predators prey on both sexes, just in different ways. Not saying they are equal, but these assholes abuse everyone they come into contact with.

@btroje apparently, just looked it up, there have been several 1000 yo magnolias. prized for their hard wood and tight grain. So unless something bad happens, mine should live another 3-500 years, I just hope to be around for it's 100th.

Time to replant.
glennlab replies on Sep 9, 2018:
It was really planted too close to another tree, where the residents were planted in pine boxes, so that tree did well. Any new tree would need to be planted much farther way to thrive. (someone else's plots)

Do you intend to plant a new tree? Not that it makes a difference to your grandfather.
glennlab replies on Sep 9, 2018:
no, that would be more trouble than it is worth.

glennlab replies on Sep 9, 2018:
@creative51 This was a very young tree, it was planted in 55, cut down in 2010, average age for a magnolia is 300+ years before age related degeneration sets in. They are very slow growing, I have a 90 yo in my front yard and it is less than 24 in in diameter, 3-5 feet is fully mature.

While it's rare for this to happen to S. magnolias, apparently the tree succumbed to disease and had to be removed

@Hathacat I've had dragon fruit before, but it was rather bland, I've heard that the plant ripened fruit is more flavorful. The um I'm taking out is in a bad spot. So I'll go with 2 different cultivars of sweet plums, probably a black or sugar. My neighbor doesn't speak English, so a note would be worthless. I use it mainly as fragrance for my car on long trips with a little for cooking. It will be another 3-5 years before my pecan produces commercial quantities of nuts, but yeah, there is money to be made.
