@racocn8 Our post WW II intell was that they were close, but that the program was going full speed. they had gotten the breeder reactor tech from the germans. they were in the process of fueling it when the war ended, it would have been at least 6 months after that before they had enough plutonium for weapons. In fact we were 6months away from having our 4th weapon since we had used all our plutonium on fat man and trinity. That is not to say they were only 6 months from a workable atomic device, that is to say they were at least 6 months from having enough fissile material to test one.

glennlab replies on Aug 16, 2021:
@racocn8 There were at least 4 groups trying to develop an atomic weapon during WW II, US,GB and Canada, USSR, Germany, and Japan. We were first past the post. We did not know the status of the Japanese effort, but we did know that they had access to the German research. There have been many revisionist that have stated that Japan was about to surrender, I wholeheartedly doubt that since only the emperor had that authority and it took the two detonations to convince him to surrender. The Japanese high command have stated that had they developed the bomb first, they would have used it. To answer your second question first, if I were Truman I would have3 done exactly what he did, since extending the war would have allowed both the Soviets and Japanese the chance to complete their weapons and neither of them would have wasted any time in delivering the weapons. Having seen the effects of nuclear devices, I hope that they are never used again, but we can't get that genie back in the bottle. The world needed to see the devastation that these devices could exact on targets. Both of the targets chosen were military targets that would have been devastated by conventional bombing had they not been one of the several pre-selected targets. In fact we killed more people the previous week in Tokyo with firebombs than either atomic target city. Japan had attacked the US in a cowardly surprise attack. They were losing, but the cost in terms of men and material on both sides was rising as we got closer to the main island. It is estimated by war planners that a final assault on the main island would cost nearly 1 million allied lives with double or triple that by the Japanese. So yes, I reluctantly think that they should have been used. I do not believe that they should be used in the future, except in retaliation
Expected that

viruses have existed for billions of years, we were not able to identify them specificly until the 20th century, but were able to identify the diseases caused by them for hundreds of years. Just like we were able to know that cancer was a cause of death long before we could identify which type of cancer. Just because we didn't know exactly what it was didin't mean that we couldn't find ways to combat it.

Your title is misleading, what they say is that the method of treatment is incomplete since many are symptoms of trauma, and we only treat the symptoms and not the underlying cause. To use their example it is like treating a broken bone with pain killers and never setting the bone.

@skado then it's title is misleading once you read the article. synopis, and paper. It looks like a classic case of the headline writer reading the first graph, then writing the headline based on just that.

@Killtheskyfairy DNA on it's surface if just exposed to air and normal tempature changes would degrade quickly. The ancient DNA discoveries we have been able to tickle out came from frozen samples in an oxygen poor enviroment. Conditions would have been far from ideal, churches are buit for air flow, but their shape concentrates the heat in its upper levels, where this carving is. I wish we could, but with today's science, it is just not possible yet. https://slate.com/technology/2013/02/dna-testing-richard-iii-how-long-does-dna-last.html
