I think I grew up in a less sane area. We would wait until the city spread fresh gravel in the road. We would play IN THE ROAD .... even after they oiled down the gravel with (probably dioxin saturated) oil, we would be playing in the gravel in the road until the mud eventually ate it.

The new shoots taste like asparagus, the tubers need to be really young or they are too tough, the tubers also require double boiling, the first one removes the build up of iodine.
