Gay over Athiest
godef comments on Dec 10, 2017:
Atheism is the antithesis of theism (duh!), so atheism is by definition abhorred by theists. OTOH, as much as the religious right may find homosexuality abhorrent, it is far from mutually exclusive.
What is the difference between an Athiest/Agnostic and a Religious/Godly person when...?
godef comments on Dec 10, 2017:
I feel there is middle ground to the extent that we would all be better off to have at least some semblance of mutual respect for each other's POV. As an American, I understand it's a constitutional right to believe whatever you want, and as a patriot, I am obliged to defend that right. But it's a two edged sword; the religious must also acknowledge my right not to believe, and as soon as they try to make law based on their beliefs, they are violating my constitutional rights.
Dark Matter and Dark Energy
godef comments on Dec 10, 2017:
I think we just don't have enough knowledge to make any conclusions at this point. Dark Matter/Energy are currently only kluges as astrophysicists try to develop a model of the universe that makes sense and explains everything. It's like that missing evolutionary step we have yet to uncover to know exactly how some species evolved. Dark Matter/Energy are blanks waiting to be filled in.

belief?
godef comments on Dec 10, 2017:
The basis of your question is not logical. If you take "belief" out of God religions, you have nothing because that belief is baseless. Atheism is not a belief because there is no baseless belief to take away from it; atheism is a *lack* of belief. Now, if there was proof of God, then you would have a belief to take away from the stubborn atheist who still refuses to acknowledge this proof. But, this is not the case.

What do you all make of kneeling for the anthem?
godef comments on Dec 1, 2017:
Had Tom Brady kneeled at the anthem and announced he was praying for his mom when she had cancer, the whole stadium probably would have joined him. And what about those who locked arms, people didn't seem to mind that? How is this different from kneeling? They both use the anthem to send some sort of message. The notion of disrespecting the military is a red herring. The real reason people are upset at kneeling for the anthem is because this is what Colin Kaepernick did when he announced he was protesting police brutality of blacks; people just don't want to hear it.

10 fallacies about atheists - have I missed any?
godef comments on Nov 30, 2017:
Fallacies about your so called fallacies... 1) It's not up to atheists to prove there isn't a god; it's logically impossible to prove something doesn't exist. There's no faith involved, we simply react to the fact that we have never seen anything that remotely indicates the existence of God. To the contrary, the onus is on the believer to prove God exists. 2) This is really just paraphrasing of #1... doesn't count. 3) Irrelevent. Pity those who suck on the drug of religion and waste their lives praying to Santa Claus for lack of a bad experience. Hope he brings you a lump of coal. 4) Again, this is really just paraphrasing of #1... we're down to 8 delusions. Do you have mermaid nightmares? I have bad dreams about unicorns. 5) Irrelevent. What do believers do when they're not sinning? The same thing atheists do when they're "inappropriately behaving". We all want to do it. 6) I believe in the New England Patriots. I believe the sun will rise in the morning. Unlike the notion of God, I have plenty to base these "beliefs" on. The point being, belief is not synonymous with religion. 7) Alright, this one is just plain dumb. I walked outdoors this morning and saw a bird, so I know for sure birds exist. Drove my car to work, so I know cars exists and that I have a job. Should I stop now? 8) Another rerun; see #5. 9) There are no religious in hell, either. Want to make a bet? For every atheist in a foxhole who converted to a believer, there are hundreds of thousands of believers who have become atheist under far less peril than a foxhole. 10) God is only imaginary to the extent that someone else besides me wants to believe in him. So please don't speak for me. I don't sit here thinking he's imaginary, I simply don't see any evidence he exists. Like most anybody else on this site, I was conditioned as a child to accept the existence of God, and I think it's a credit to each our intelligences that we've been able to see through the fairy tales. As a child, you and I both eventually stopped believing in Santa Clause. As an adult, I have stopped believing in God. Please catch up already! All the twisted logic you present is typical of the religious. In the end, it always comes down to the same thing: YOU CANNOT PROVE THE EXISTENCE OF GOD. And until you can, please spare us of all this silly nonsense. It's nothing but cheap spin.
What is your standard of evidence, regarding religious claims?

Are Atheist like the people who live outside of the Matrix?
godef comments on Nov 30, 2017:

I'm still new to the world of atheism, but becoming more and more comfortable.
godef comments on Nov 30, 2017:
I don't expect there to be an after-life; of course I can't prove it, but I'm presuming that when I die... that's it, nothing. Hard to imagine, isn't it? That's why I don't want to die in pain, because I fear, for lack of any experience beyond death, that the last moments may feel like they're drawn out into infinity. I remember a dream I had in college, where I found myself doubting the existence of any gods (don't recall how I got to this point) then suddenly I feel my body whipped high in the sky and then zinged back and forth as if attached to a very long rubber band. Scared the hell out of me. Another time after college, I was in a long distance relationship which was souring for me... too much time on the telephone with someone I was no longer so interested in... one early morning I swear I was lucid and found myself strapped down to my bed by a telephone cord... then I woke up for real.

Incest: Immoral or Moral?
godef comments on Nov 27, 2017:
Biologically, it's not moral or immoral, it just isn't a good idea. As biological creatures, we have been genetically conditioned through evolution to be repulsed at the thought of incest in order to diversify the gene pool, and to avoid those genetic abnormalities that can occur for lack of diversity. When those of us shed the skin of religion, we begin the act of redefining everything in tour lives in terms of morality, but the taboo of incest is a tough nut to crack but of the genetic conditioning the species has gone through.

How comfortable are you with the word "Atheist" ?
godef comments on Nov 27, 2017:
Do you notice how atheist is typically spelled Atheist. As with everything, it's those with closed minds who are compelled to label and compartmentalize what they don't understand, much in the same way religions are created. Some go so far as to call Atheism a religion, figuring that it is based on the "belief" that there is no God, to which I say nonsense. If someone isn't a sports fan, do you call them a "non-sports" fan? Atheism is not a belief system, it is merely a lack of belief, thus I like to call it atheism with a small a.

How Did You Become Athiest?
godef comments on Nov 27, 2017:
Basically, I just began thinking for myself. One day I dared imagine what the world would be like if there wasn't a god, and a lot of things began to make sense. Things that were once so contradictory suddenly no longer contradicted at all, and were merely the inventions of people I didn't really know trying to make sense of their small corner of the world. A myriad of dogmas all tied up in knots suddenly disappeared. It began sometime during high school and I believe (though I'm not quite sure) was all sorted out in my mind by the time I went to college.
