Yes!!! Hot Chip! One of my favorites. I keep anticipating the announcement of a new album. Why Make Sense is 3 years old already and they usually put a new one out every 2-3 years.
Homelessness
indirect76 comments on May 19, 2018:
I was briefly homeless when I was 19 and my home was flooded. It didn’t really bother me because I had good friends that gave me a place to stay until I could get my own place.

indirect76 comments on May 19, 2018:
Hmm. The allegory is interesting. I’m not too sure what group the author is including as cult members. Surely the spree killers, but they seem to include gun advocates, the media and even the victims. So I’m a bit lost on that one. I also don’t agree with the author’s notion of what the killer’s motivations are. They speak of the need of people to recognize their superiority. I don’t think that’s hardly ever the case. It’s a tough thing.

And the only way that the two peoples will accept that, is to give up the idea that a "God" gave them title to that land. That’s been the fundamental problem the whole time. Genius idea Hitchens, give yourself a well deserved pat on the back for figuring that one out. Then people wonder why I have no interest in reading ‘athiest literature’.

Camus is fantastic. The Stranger was required my senior year of high school. It really spoke to me and I remember reading the entire thing in one sitting. That lead me into his philosophy and existentialism. Though I never had a religion to convert from.
Athiestists and Astrology

People concieved in August do not share the same environment. It’s winter in August for half the globe. Ignoring that, why shouldn't that have some affect on our attitude and temperament? There is no reason, but there is no reason to think it should either. Hell, there’s no reason to think people born in the same month would share any attribute except a digit in their birthday.

indirect76 comments on May 11, 2018:
I don’t get it, but I have relatives on my dad’s side that are scared of house cats. People are strange and can be scared of all kinds of things. In my relatives case it’s pathological, so I’d say phobia is apt. Himophobia is probably a learned behavior, so I would not use phobia specifically for that.

What do you think of a computer programed to benefit the majority of the population , insure world ...
indirect76 comments on May 9, 2018:
I’ll take this one. Being a software engineer I can say that you can only write software to do what the programmer already knows how to do. The problem is coming up with an algorithm that churns out world peace and environment/economic stability. So creating an algorithm for these goals that are not exactly objective is the first oroblem. The second problem is something called P vs NP problems. The gist is, P(polynomial) problems are considered ‘easy’, as in they can be computed in a short time. An example would be anything that your phone can currently do. NP(nondeterministic-polynomial) problems require many orders of magnitude longer to compute with current technology. An example of a NP problem would be factoring a number that is a product of two large (100+ digits) prime numbers. Something like this may take billions of year even if we had a trillion times more computing power worldwide. The problems you describe are each most orobably NP. Third, even if the first and second problem were solved, you would still have the problem of implementing the plan set out by the computer. You would have to give the computer complete control (bad idea), or trust that everyone will be on board, which they won’t be. Quantum computers or neural networks may help though.
I've been considering the implications of current trends in technology.
indirect76 comments on May 9, 2018:
I used to be against Marxism and communism outright because it cedes too much power to the state and the history of where that can lead. Though, as automation start taking over we are going to have to figure out a way to deal with the great inequality that this may bring. Truck driving is a huge employer in the US and it’s a few steps away from being an obsolete profession. There are many, many professions like this, so what are we going to do?

'They don't belong': police called on Native American teens on college tour | US news | The Guardian
indirect76 comments on May 5, 2018:
Anonymity should be protected. If I see someone being creepy, I should be able to call the police without risk of reprisal. The police did speak with the caller, and they did have to explain to themselves. I don’t think publishing their name will do good for anyone but hooligans. I don’t get how it just a forgone conclusion that the caller was racially motivated. It may well have been, who knows, but you can’t just assume that. How many times are the police called on innocent people that are acting suspicious? Hundreds a day? Though it happens to two ethnic kids, they miss a school tour and now it’s news?

Dehumanization, in any form, is not a good thing. It’s what makes genocide possible and war easy.
