Freedom! - from what exactly?
ipdg77 comments on Sep 29, 2018:
I don't have the definitive answer but the question of freedom came up during lectures at uni when I did history. When confronted with freedom you have to establish whether it's a freedom from something or a freedom to do something, then you can get stuck in :-)
Am I only one who dislike the rapid-fire questions from a stranger?
ipdg77 comments on Sep 29, 2018:
I prefer to just chat and let the conversation go where it wants. You find out a lot more that way but that's not why i prefer it, I just made it sound like a plan or scheme :-o
Good afternoon all.

Welcome along. Just keep doing what you've already been doing, the levels piss by pretty quickly early on :-)
Wouldn't it?

I have two thoughts on this A) The crowning turd in this particular drainpipe would be that when they finish killing themselves over their imaginary friend we could then join in the killing over there's or ours. or B) Humans have already been there
Any speculations on where your thoughts come from?
ipdg77 comments on Sep 29, 2018:
This is probably fairly basic but here goes. I was baptised a catholic and brought up as one. I was in primary school (aged about 8) when I started to question the validity of what I was being told about god such as; water into wine, feeding the 5,000, not going to church was a mortal sin equivalent to murder (also a mortal sin) and so on. It all seemed unbelievable and that notion has stayed with me. As I've grown older I've read a number of religious texts across many faiths and the notion has not only remained but flourished as I came to understand that it's nonsense. Where did my thoughts come from? I think from the way I'm wired mainly but perhaps the seed was sowed, unwittingly, by my mother who said that when she too asked questions of the 'fantastic' when she was younger she was told that was where faith came in. That struck me as flimsy at best even at a young age, but my mother had a faith throughout her life. Is my skepticism my own? I was brought up to question things and to ask if i didn't know or better still go to the library and find out for myself. So I guess my parents were instrumental in this even if they didn't expect me to question the validity and/or the existence of god. For most of my life my skepticism was a private matter only because there was no one as interested as I was in religion, not god necessarily, and the impact it was having and continued to have on various peoples. I found out about the atheist community about 3 years ago and came across Christopher Hitchins. I thought 'Wow!' this guy thinks the same as I do, he's come to the same conclusions I have albeit in a far more robust and perhaps intellectual way but none the less it acted as a confirmation of my own thoughts and findings. So if I have just uploaded a mental operating system I was and am not aware of it and so I'm quite happy that my skepticism and 'no belief' is mostly my own.
I am never near a computer in the morning!

I don't like the word, "Atheist ".
ipdg77 comments on Sep 29, 2018:
I don't think it's pretentious, not where it relates to me at any rate, I consider myself to be an atheist solely because I see no evidence for the existence of any god, anything divine or anything supernatural. It's not a lack of belief it's just non belief, there's nothing, that I can see, to believe in. I don't define myself by the term and it certainly isn't the most important thing in life to me.
Does anyone truly "believe"?
ipdg77 comments on Sep 29, 2018:
I would have thought that if you really believe in a god or deity it's down to what you make of it, you certainly don't need a religion to tell you how to believe. If you're following a religion's way of doing things you actually believe in the religion not the god they believe in.

Fermi's Paradox: [patreon.com]
ipdg77 comments on Sep 28, 2018:
I get the paradox of lack of evidence versus high probability but..... Lack of evidence is based around what we currently assume and see as evidence and we've only been 'aware' of the possibility of life elsewhere in the universe for maybe 500 years tops, apart from a few, so they could have been coming and going for 13.8 billion years (less 500) and we wouldn't know. We don't know enough about the universe yet to even get near this question so the paradox in relation to alien life is a non sequitur. The question posed comes from a source of assumed knowledge, this is flawed as the assumptions are just that.

Is internet dating really the only way to meet someone anymore?

This is going to sound so pedantic but the only way to 'meet' someone is in real life. The internet may help facilitate a date but you gotta have contact :-)

As a mom to a preteen boy with autism, I am finding it so difficult to have “the talk” with ...
ipdg77 comments on Sep 28, 2018:
As far as the talk goes it would depend on his level of academic functioning, that is, it may be that the science and the facts are the best way. If there's a learning disability as well I'm not sure but this link to the UK's National Autistic Societies webpage may help. It's the front page so some searching may well need to be done :-) https://www.autism.org.uk/
Okay, so Cosby has been sentenced to at least three, and no more than ten years.
ipdg77 comments on Sep 25, 2018:
In the UK we had a bit of a purge on historic cases of sexual impropriety (that's not to demean a lot of which were pretty gross) so it became a bit of a witch hunt and some innocent people got scooped up in the process. But providing it's done correctly the victims should get justice so this may be the start of a domino effect.
