Funny, I was having a similar discussion with my 11 year old daughter about this very thing only today. I like loads of different sorts of music but I'm a metal head for the most part. I like my music loud usually, allowing for others in the vacinity of course, but the song that triggered our chat was Smoke On The Water, I said to my daughter I like music loud but some stuff has to be so loud it's an actual bodily experience as well, for me at any rate. It's a funny feeling to describe, live music played so loud your whole body is resonating to it. Melody is the foremost part for me, if the lyrics are good as well then great but then put it through LOUD filter. Fantastic :-)

Yes it is. Participating in sport can be good for health and fitness as well as just for the sheer enjoyment of it. It can also help reduce social isolation for those less able to mix and join in so easily, it shows a common interest. Being part of a team means being part of something, shared experience, shared history, understanding that a small cog in a big wheel is very important. I have played a lot of sport over the years but I would think soccer, football and skiing mostly, I'm not particularly brilliant at any of them, but it was always hugely enjoyable, I won a national title along the way and represented my country in a tiny way, something that I wouldn't have done if it wasn't for sport. I've also had some great holidays thru sport and picked up some horrible injuries but it's all been fantastic. Now I'm a bit older (a lot older actually) I'm not involved in sport but like watching it, some people have other past times, I like watching sport. I have my teams that I follow and I live and die with them when they're playing. But I could still be involved, the rise in walking football for the elderly or disabled is brilliant. I could do that if I so chose along with a host of other sports.

I cannot prove either way the existance of an afterlife therefore the answer is I don't know what happens next, maybe nothing maybe something. The harsh truth is that nobody else does either. I think your view regarding a legacy says far more and is of more substance that you think but I accept the difficulties your children must have and the difficulties you have in that area. Some people may have a faith or a hope that there is some sort of post death reunion and if that's what works for the individual then that's fine by me but not something I suggest or would concur with, as I said 'I don't know' can be the only rational conclusion....for me. I would also acknowledge that I am not surrounded by people who wear there faith openly and so verbally as appears to be the case in a lot of the US, in the UK it seems to be a more private matter, so this almost confrontational after death experience is less prevalent over here. I hope you find a way to balance your needs and non beliefs with the pressures that surround you.

The arena in Rome was not about sport even if they were described as games, it was about the Emperor displaying his authority, and the prudent giving of largesse, and the masses displaying loyalty and obediance to that authority. All the seating was specific to different classes and social groups. It was as close as the Romans came to blood sacrifice without openly admitting it. It was an integral part of any Roman society. Probably the closest thing to a Roman arena would be a bull ring in terms of spectacle but not necessarily the social structure of the seating (I've never been so not sure of seating) Like it or not, and you clearly don't, there is a need, and it's heavily male dominated, to see and/or be involved in combat. I'm sure there are plenty of works on this but whatever the rights and wrongs the need clearly exists, barbaric or not.

I think Christianity is a long, long way from being anywhere near the last straw. Even if the bible were absolutely proven to be a work of complete fiction about a person who is proven to not exist they would merely adapt and manipulate what is said and written to continue on. For example, the Turin Shroud was proven to be a fraud and it made no difference at all, it is still revered. There are also way too many Christian religions for them all to just up sticks and close up shop. Religion will look different a 100 or a 1,000 years from now as it does from how it looked a thousand years ago but the basic tenants, based around bullshit, will still exist.

Came home, faffed a bit, took her to guitar lesson, I'm hoping she's the ultimate rock chick the world is waiting for, then food shopping which is ok, my 11 year old is really helpful and doesn't winge one iota. Back home, sorted tea while checking the footy scores. We're doing our own internet thing and I've got the Masters on. All very relaxing and enjoyable, we just like hanging out :-)

I don't think there's any offense there but the Mickey Mouse connection is puzzling, I would have thought it would be lost on most autistic people or it will be a major distraction.
