jacpod comments on Jul 22, 2018:
I think we are frightened. I certainly am and fear leads to anger and illness and all sorts of problems I don't think it is the fault of any one on facebook, especially, it is just that all of us are uncertain of our future and that is a recipe for depression. When you have political leaders who are mostly caring about themselves, their own offshore accounts etc, and not capable of looking after their electorate we are just going to get more and more of this unrest - I see it also with Donald Trump and I don't really understand why we are giving out to any of these self- centred politicians. I do know its got inside me and i have spent a fair few days in tears feeling utterly defeated.

What do you think about the GDR?
jacpod comments on Jul 22, 2018:
I was in Germany for two years and lived in Berlin - then Niederfischbach near Siegen. I loved it we were only allowed to go to the east on certain days and had our passports stamped so that we couldnt stay overnight I was living in a tent on a campsite and many of the older people came over to visit their family from whom they had been separated but could only stay a short time - I asked one of the older women what it as like and she said it was pretty equal really some things were worse some betterI was impressed by all the beautiful countryside but rather alarmed at the size of your ants.ours are really small.
Ok I'm new here . Just going to feel around and see how this works.

I have a fair amount of contempt for Israelis except the Chassidic guys who seem to be wanting a level playing field but I am horrified by what the Jews have done there especially given that they know what its like to go through that horror - I have a friend who is Jewish who lives in England and doesnt like the arrogance of the Israelis.

Its weird to get so many awful politicians all around the world all at one time we must be living in really hard times- we have the May-bot and some awful tory dreadfuls like Rees Mogg , then Trump who even tries to eclipse a 90 yr old Queen of a foreign power putin who is pulling strings behind the scenes Iain Paisley jnr. who does absolutely nothing, seriously, we do have a rather nice Irish Taoiseach but then we have Kim Jong un etc etc. sad days!

Are atheists criticising the wrong things about religion?
jacpod comments on Jul 20, 2018:
I don't really do 'shoulds' and really have no reason to criticise religion - whatever floats your boat - go for it ! Religion has no place in my life at all, except when I get mad or sad about all the holocausts but for me alone it never enters my head- I have never had a religion.
What is your Mantra?
jacpod comments on Jul 20, 2018:

What would you do if some of your Facebook friends were constantly posting those corny Hallmark ...
jacpod comments on Jul 20, 2018:
I have often wondered if there were courses you could go on that helped you chill out on all these unpleasant things I think because I was an abused child I do a lot of fingers in my ears moments when everything gets too much but that doesnt work for the written word - You could unfriend them and if they pull you on it say - "oh I am so sorry. I had too many friends and had to do a bit of pruning! in order to stay sane!'
Empathy For Human Beings - Supporting Each Other
jacpod comments on Jul 20, 2018:
I am going to spoil the party here a bit !Sorry! She was absolutely right It is one of the 3 core conditions (Carl Rogers ) for personal growth to take place and I live in sheltered accommodation amongst people who are seriously bitter - I dont know how they would get to anywhere like warmth empathy or congruence and I find my society is becoming shattered and scattered - So given that the above is the place to aim at sometimes I think we havent the personal tools to survive with dignity. (And I have been researching peoples inhumanity to people on the holocaust thread so maybe just on my own downer at the moment) I do feel that I had a society in the forties up to the eighties and then it disappeared. My government has no dignity

Yes my family were all abusive my mother bi-polar mainly manic my father unreachable and depressed from his war years and sexually abusive . I had very bad dissociative Identity disorder .I am now in my later years and feeling a lot better but I dont fit into my society in any way, shape or form - and even though I am a person centred counsellor it feels like something I do in a vacuum and that there are too many vacuums. jacpod comments on Jul 18, 2018:

nice thoughts to ponder - I am a 'constant gardener ' I think other people garden for many reasons and my partner is not a gardener but will help with construction projects - I think I might be a 'chancer' gardener because I experiment a lot and it doesn't always turn out well . This year has been quite a disaster for us with a hosepipe ban and maybe our hottest months ever when we are really used to constant rain and dont quite know how to cope . .

jacpod comments on Jul 17, 2018:
Well rotted Horse manure is good for roses also lots of water, planters need quite a lot of watering - we are in a hosepipe ban here in Northern Ireland at the moment so its excruciating work getting round all the gardens lifting the full watering can
Tomatoes are coming on strong.
jacpod comments on Jul 17, 2018:

WHAT'S YOUR POSITION ON ABORTION ?
jacpod comments on Jul 16, 2018:
I had an abortion after having two children and with a mental unwellness decided i wasnt capable of looking after another at that time with children of 3 and 4 yrs old already. I was strongarmed into having a sterilisation at the same time and I will never forget and never forgive -Later I was a counsellor at the health centre that had my records and so I oppportunistically photocopied my own - It was a one liner. No explanation at all

DO ATHEISTS AND HUMANISTS HAVE SACRED VALUES?
jacpod comments on Jul 16, 2018:
I think that I am probably quite reflexive socially with other people if that is correct terminology - If someone is ok with me I am ok with them - when they decide to make the first move to do the dirty on me I just ignore them forever, as life is too short, especially as I am already 70 y.o. I live in a complex of 26 flats for older people and we have friendship groups. I have been attacked in here three times now, so all is not great sailing and the management leaves a lot to be desired - So thank heavens for the community police force. I think live and let live is a good ideal but not always available.
I find this to be a better place to hang out social media wise.

A word of caution to those who are against religion as much as I am.
jacpod comments on Jul 16, 2018:
I dont talk to anyone 'as an atheist' my name is Laura I talk as Laura - If anyone starts a convo about religion I excuse myself from the party; it isn't my thing and I have never, ever, been religious and have no interest in it any more than I have in people talking about fishing or stamp collecting - Its only a subject and one I don't wish to engage in - By all means make me laugh or cry but don't bore me to tears - I dont have a high horse I don't like being lectured about how to behave because i'll be learning that for the rest of my life, and it actually is my life to love as I please-- and I have zilch interest in religion of any kind and never have had. I 'd rather talk about vegetables.
In interesting read:[theguardian.com] Trump suffers from delusion of grandeur!!!!
jacpod comments on Jul 16, 2018:
I think in some ways its funny reading how he misbehaved - walking in front of the queen and blocking her from walking at all - sitting in the revered churchill's armchair without permission. I know they are silly things and they don't upset me but a lot of people here are traditionalists and take comfort in some of the rituals and someone of a foreign power being so derisive of those rituals is a step too far and yes I think he gets away with it shamelessly. I am pretty much anti Monarchy as they cost us so much but given they are there and work very hard and have practically given their whole lives to the job they should get some recognition. I didnt choose to live in a monarchy but I'll defend it until we have a better democracy.

Religion and war
jacpod comments on Jul 15, 2018:
Sometimes but you would probably have to go pretty far back to discover those origins _ I seem to remember that in one war one side was upset about having gun cartidges The grease on the cartridge: The final spark was provided by the ammunition for the new Enfield P-53 rifle. These rifles, which fired Minié balls, used paper cartridges that came pre-greased. To load the rifle, sepoys had to bite the cartridge open to release the powder. The grease used on these cartridges was rumoured to include tallow derived from beef, which would be offensive to Hindus, and pork, which would be offensive to Muslims.

Can you "read" a person?
jacpod comments on Jul 11, 2018:
In some ways I am, in other ways I am pretty cue blind - I was a lecturer in Rogerian person centred counselling for many years - so if i am one to one with someone I can get them pretty well and see where they are coming from - Now I am living in a country I didnt start out from and so the clues are not there and obviously if they arent my clients I am not going to have rapport with them - sometmes I can barely make out what they are saying, even if its just a greeting. where i am living is far more religous than anything i have ever experienced before so as an atheist that is part of the mix too as I dont speak that language either - but non eof it is any bother to me as I am now 70y.o and pretty much out of the game - Nice when I meet someone I click with no bother if I dont .

I think that it is enough for me to engage with those people who are capable of engaging with me . None of my circles has ever contained my family of origin & I am fine about that - family means nothing to me unless we care about each other - Mine were mentally unwell and unreachable . Basically I will play with anyone who plays nice and doesnt pull anything on me and I am enormously happy being on my own or with a known friend having a laugh and a loon around & I wouldnt waste my precious time left with people who are not getting me in any way shape or form -
