Texas Woman Meredith McKee Tearfully Reveals She Tested Positive For COVID-19 A Second Time
mcgeo52 comments on Jun 24, 2020:
I saw the comment by @SeaGreenEyez about faulty test results. Given the symptoms suffered both times by Ms. McKee, I find it difficult to write this off as faulty test results. If it is the case, as it appears to be, that she has indeed contracted the virus twice, that is very bad news and possibly very good news. While it is obviously bad news for her, it is also very bad news for the rest of us because it means that an effective vaccine is probably impossible. So, what could the good news possibly be? It means we can redirect our efforts from finding a vaccine to finding an effective treatment or cure. And the good news about that is that, while it takes at least a year to develop a vaccine, a treatment or cure can be tested in months, if not weeks.

I’m wondering if maybe there is something going on behind the scenes here. The NFL has a huge contract with the US military. It is basically for PR for the armed forces. Think fly overs, honoring the troops, active duty soldiers surprising family members by appearing at a game. They have had lots of experience with this kind of thing. I don’t think I’m going to far out on a limb here to note that our country is at a pivotal point regarding race. The most successfully integrated part of our society is the military. Just wondering if anybody from the military has been having conversations with the NFL? And now that I think about it, I wonder about NASCAR, too.

**A Proposed Partial Solution** Originally posted on Facebook on June 6, 2020 Abuse of power by police is a systemic problem. And, while it impacts people of color disproportionately, it effects all of us. Any rational person would agree that we, as a society, need to address the issue. According to the police what we are seeing is a few bad apples. If that is so, what are the good apples doing about it? In reality, what can they do about it? In the case of Derek Chauvin, there was apparently not much they could, or would, do. He had 18 prior incidents on his record. Why was he still a cop? As I see it, this isn't a single issue. It's not just about the "Police Culture." Nor is it just about the unions making it hard to fire bad cops. Nor is it just about civil service making it hard to fire bad cops. It is a complex problem to which all of the above contribute. Maybe it's time that we take a serious look at civil service laws. What if we modified the law so that a group of an employee's peers could petition for that employee to have their employment terminated? We could obviously require cause, and also make this subject to review by an independent board to prevent abuse of the procedure. While this would not only apply to police (think bureaucrats and teachers) in the case of police we could choose to have the process run through the union. To make this work we would need to give the union an incentive to cooperate in culling the bad apples. There is currently a bipartisan bill in Congress to eliminate qualified immunity for police. Why not add a clause to it that would make the union partially liable for any civil judgment against an officer? In short, let's give the police the means and incentive to police their own. Will this completely solve the problem? I'm not willing to make that claim. But 1,004 people were shot and killed by police in the US in 2019. What if we only cut that number in half? Would that be a bad start? Please feel free to comment and share.

mcgeo52 comments on Jun 8, 2020:
I am hopeful that will happen here in Long Beach ( a slightly larger city than Minneapolis, BTW). We have had thousands of peaceful demonstrators in the streets this weekend demanding defund and dismantle. City Council Members are making favorable noises. The LBPD has had a good relationship with the activists up until this week. They have been the guys who blocked traffic for the marches and made sure no troublemakers caused problems. Those are the decent cops. This week the protesters got to see some of the other cops (picture attached). In Long Beach we don't view excess force by the police as a racial issue. Our cops are equal opportunity killers. They murder black, brown, and white people. Before I get too hopeful, I have to note that a report just came out that the Police Union has contributed $500,000 to the Mayor's campaigns over the last 5 years. As you can see, this picture from Long Beach got world wide attention.

There would only be two reasons to scrap the swabs. Either they failed QA or they were contaminated. I'm wiling to bet these swabs were scrapped before they wasted any time on them in QA. My best guess is that it took them almost a full day to get that room back to where they could resume production.

mcgeo52 comments on May 29, 2020:
I remember the only two times that I am aware of when Uncle Walter made any kind of editorial comment. Both times he made it very clear that they were editorial statements. Many of you probably remember his February 27, 1968 comment about the war in Vietnam: “[I]t seems now more certain than ever that the bloody experience of Vietnam is to end in a stalemate . . . [I]t is increasingly clear to this reporter that the only rational way out then will be to negotiate, not as victors, but as an honorable people who lived up to their pledge to defend democracy, and did the best they could. This is Walter Cronkite. Good night.” The other one, that you probably don’t remember, but I doubt I will forget happened a year and a half earlier on August 1, 1966. Charles Whitman had taken a rifle to the top of the Tower at the University of Texas and shot and killed 14 people. I was very much aware of what had happened because my grandmother had called us in upstate NY from Austin and spent five minutes telling us about being at the lunch counter in Woolworth’s across the street fom the campus and hearing the shots. [For those who don’t remember, a five minute long distance phone call was a really big deal in the ‘60s.] That evening Walter Cronkite reported the story. Then he swung his chair 90 degrees, faced the other camera, loosened his tie, set down his pipe, and stated that what would follow was a personal comment. He then told about when he was the editor of The Daily Texan, the campus paper at UT, that he had written an editorial against building the Tower, and went on to say, I”m sorry it has come to this, but I told you so.” He then tightened his tie, picked up his pipe, swung his chair back around, and went on with the news. BTW, my father was a student at UT when Cronkite wrote that editorial and confirmed that the editorial said the administration would regret building the Tower.
Less of a dog whistle and more of a bull horn.
