I haven't much to say about myself. Childfree, nonsmoker (but 420-friendly--I just hate tobacco smoking), GenX, lesbian, Doctor Who fan since about 1983. I like to do active things as often as I can. I have narcolepsy. I'm sure I'll update with more.

Food for thought over the weekend: What is the cause of human suffering?

Greed. That's all. Nothing deeper than that.
Why are there so many people who are lonely?
memorylikeasieve comments on Jun 23, 2018:
I dunno. I have the unenviable conundrum of being an extrovert with social anxiety. I need to be around people, but I'm afraid of once again being ignored or rejected or told I'm annoying.

Can we quite the “White Privilege” nonsense?
memorylikeasieve comments on Jun 23, 2018:
I've thought about this for a while and I think the crux of the objection to being told one has 'white privelige' lies in the interpretation of the word 'privelige' itself. All too often it's associated with life being handed to one on a silver platter. So one then thinks that they're being told that their lives are a walk in the park and they should shut up and never complain because someone somewhere has it worse. That's where the whole 'I'm literally starving, where's that white privilege you keep banging on about' response comes from. I think we should work on changing the connotations of the word. Stop associating it with the easy life.

memorylikeasieve comments on Jun 23, 2018:
Sure I'll try to use correct pronouns, and I avoid the term 'snowflake' because I'm fucking sick of it but this whole microaggressions thing and folks putting the onus for their happiness on others reminds me far too much of my abusive narcissistic mother. It was everyone else's responsibility to keep her happy and absolutely everything offended her or was a personal attack. I walked on eggshells for 25 years. I'm done.
You gotta laugh.

memorylikeasieve comments on Jun 22, 2018:
No nipples on men. They're pointless. I'd also do away with oestrus as we know it. I'm sure I can think of a better way to signal female fertility than something that involves pain and bleeding every month.
Shawshank Redemption. My favorite movie. What's yours?
memorylikeasieve comments on Jun 22, 2018:
The Dark Crystal. Not for any high-falutin message (I'll reserve that honour for my second-favourite, Contact), but for the sheer artistry. Every second of that film was *crafted.*. Save for some of the scenery, everything was made from scratch. It was an endeavour that will probably never be matched.

Is traveling and being exposed to other people and cultures important and why?
memorylikeasieve comments on Jun 22, 2018:
Travel is not a bad thing but until it ceases being prohibitively expensive it's a privilege and a luxury, and cannot be a necessity. Sure there are ways of doing so that appear inexpensive but it all adds up to a total that most people, especially Americans, can't afford.

Generations ----- 1. Which named generation do you most identify as your own?
memorylikeasieve comments on Jun 19, 2018:
I'm very GenX. I was born in 1974 and I remember the 80s. I found out pretty early on that jobs don't just grow on trees, that University can put a person in insurmountable debt, and that ends rarely meet. Less depressingly I can chart all this technological progress within my lifetime, as I remember the when push button phones, answering machines, and microwave ovens were new things, and the evolution of mobile phones and video games.
Let's talk about the easily offended.
memorylikeasieve comments on Jun 18, 2018:
I often think we're getting offended by maybe not 'the wrong things' but definitely quite often by things that cannot be changed quickly, if at all. There's a lot of demanding instant change of human nature, which just doesn't happen in reality. Then there are people who seem to hunt for offence in everything and it becomes a 'Boy Who Cried Wolf' situation, hurting the very cause they're fighting for. Personally, if someone uses the word 'microaggressions' sincerely I take whatever else they say with several grains of salt.

What quote or saying do you find overused and/or complete BS?
memorylikeasieve comments on Jun 18, 2018:
'You can't love someone if you don't love yourself.' Bullshit. I love other people all the time, including loving them enough to let them go. This tired aphorism is just a slap in the face to people with mental illnesses, especially depression.
I lived a life full of people.
memorylikeasieve comments on Jun 18, 2018:
Mine changes in that regard when I move to new places, too. For the first 25 years of my life, I was very isolated. I wasn't allowed to leave the house on my own save for school or work. I could go places with my brother, but he was always a severe introvert and thus never wanted to go anywhere. The house was in an exceedingly difficult to find location, and in the days before GPS it was more trouble than it was worth for anyone to drive there. I scarcely had any social contact and, as an extrovert that nearly drove me mad. When I moved to Minnesota I scarcely knew anyone and had to go through what was essentially a second adolescence, learning a lot of things I had no opportunity to learn before, in a short period of time. I lived there for 15 years and gathered quite a circle of friends, but I had to leave Minnesota as I knew one more 70-below winter would land me in a psych ward. I'm in Washington state, now, and have been for three years. I'm starting over again with expanding my social circle, and it's been difficult, but at least it's going a lot more quickly this time. I'm not sure where I'm going with this other than to share my story. ?

I turn to other people. If I withdraw I just ruminate and make it worse for myself. If I know them well enough, I'll talk the problem through with them. If not, I'll ask for distractions. Failing that, I go to the gym and lift really heavy with loud music in my earbuds or get on a treadmill and turn it up as fast as I can go and run until I can't any more. Granted, it caused a bit if a scene the last time I ran off a panic attack because I started crying. Turned out the workout room wasn't as empty as I thought that day. ?
Do you like to dance ?
memorylikeasieve comments on Jun 15, 2018:
Freeform dancing, yes. Choreographed dancing... I've been known to fall over. They ask me what I'm doing, I say I have no idea, they then realise that's not a flippant answer, I literally cannot make my body do what my brain has learnt.

memorylikeasieve comments on Jun 13, 2018:
I know my view on this is quite different to most, seeing as how one of the reasons I'm here is to see if I can start a relationship with a woman. I am nervous about personal info mainly because I'm no oil painting and I've no idea if I'm as fat as the photos of me that don't make it here seem to indicate or not. I have to admit I have a touch of sympathy for people who fudge such details online--they might, like me, be hoping their minds can impress potential partners enough to make up for their looks. I often feel that my mind is all I have going for me, and my substandard looks are a detriment. People don't often like to advertise their flaws.
