Depends on the mental illness. No amount of cleaning oneself up and bla bla bootstraps is going to magically make someone with, say, Bipolar or OCD or schizophrenia the same kind of hireable as those who don't have such illnesses. Even clinical depression makes it insanely difficult when it's severe. Not everyone is as lucky as you were, either. On the rare occasion I even get an interview (despite having very neat handwriting, a resume typed out completely to spec, etc), I make sure my clothing, makeup, and hair are as respectable as physically possible. Doesn't make one fucking bit of difference. I'm still tossed aside. That said, I think people who aren't taking advice maybe need to take a look at their own minds and figure out /why/ they don't take advice.

I also live in the Pacific Northwest, in Tacoma, Washington, on the Puget Sound. Tacoma used to be a very polluted blue-collar town, and is still somewhat blue-collar, but is cleaning its waterways pretty well. The water pollution used to be so bad that the city was infamous for its smell, and Tacoma native Frank Herbert wrote the Dune series inspired by ecological extrapolations drawn from that pollution. It smells better, now, though it's not yet completely rid of the 'Tacoma Aroma.' It's seen a population explosion recently because of all the people who moved here to work in Seattle but can't afford to actually live there. It's got its problems, the infrastructure can't quite handle the influx of people, for example, but I still really like it here. Sure, it rains a lot, but I like rain. It's green all year round, and so many surfaces are covered in this emerald-coloured moss. The most striking feature is nearby Mt Rainier, which is an active but slumbering volcano. We're assured that it's so festooned with sensors that we'd know of any activity well in advance, so I'm not worried.

Nope. Misunderstanding lyrics is so common there's a word for it:. mondegreens. From the mishearing of 'They slew the Earl of Moray/and laid him on the green' to 'They slew the Earl of Moray/and Lady Mondegreen.' I was relieved to hear this was a thing when I learnt about it instead of my quarter-deaf ass forever getting things wrong.

I don't agree at all. Like someone else mentioned, there's the point that this is terrible advice for someone with mental health issues that involve self-loathing. It's never something that's going to go away, no matter how much therapy and medication one engages in. It can be managed and worked around, but it's always there. There are plenty of people who don't love themselves, but are able to give love to others. Personally, I hate myself a lot of the time. But I have plenty of love for other people and I've found that if I own my emotions and am transparent and forthcoming about how it's my mental illness that makes me feel this way, it can be worked with, like any chronic illness. And when I'm in emotion mind and lose my ability to see these things, I hope that my partner can help me come back to self-awareness--again, like with any other chronic illness that flares up. Just as I would help them with any similar trouble. Relationships are work, remember. And there are enough obstacles. I prefer to tear this one down.

I see this all the time on the HP Lovecraft forum I'm in. He was a xenophobe from a very insular New England community in the early 20th century and some of the things he wrote are egregiously racist. However, he was also a genius and invented an entire genre of literature whose impact can be seen far and wide. As we become more and more able to dig up dirt on folks, I've come to a decision. Essentially every human being is a terrible person. Everyone has done something that someone, somewhere, is going to find offensive. Sometimes it's clear and obvious, like with Lovecraft. Other times, it's a matter of interpretation. But if I'm going to stop following the work of every person who did/said awful things, I would literally have to throw everything out. I have to draw a line and consider things like time period and severity of what they did/said. I will continue to read and positively discuss Lovecraft's fiction while acknowledging that his racism, while common for the time, is still inexcusable. However I will never knowingly watch anything involving Kevin Spacey ever again. These are just my examples, though.

Doctors look for simpler and more treatable diagnoses first. It's the old adage about hearing hoofbeats and looking for horses rather than zebras. Fibromyalgia is exceedingly difficult to Dx because the only measurable sign is the presence of hypersensitive nerve spots. The symptoms listed are nebulous and show up in a mile-long list of ailments. I think a differential diagnosis might be the way to go. I had that done and that's how they found I have narcolepsy.

I grew up in a remote area and although we had amenities it still took 15 to 30 minutes (depending on the weather) to get to anything even resembling a town. When it took 20 minutes for an ambulance to reach the house for what was thankfully a non-emergency, I decided I'd never live in the sticks again. Had it been an emergency I would have been dead by the time they got there. No fucking thanks.

When I do manage to leave the house quickly enough, I'm the person who ends up hitting every red light or gets lost. Plot my course to avoid getting lost? Google leads me a merry chase all over town to end up in the wrong location. Start early? There's a wreck on I-5. Start even earlier? Arrive on time, traipse all over the building, unable to find the room I'm looking for, end up late anyway. I've managed to be on time for appointments about nine times out of ten, but social things is where it falls down. But if people want to drop me because of it, it's their loss.
