p-nullifidian comments on Jun 24, 2021:
Interesting how nearly all of these “news” sources couch the IRS denial as an infringement or affront to Christian meddling in politics, the very thing that infringes on the establishment clause of the First Amendment. The value expressed by the Framers when separating church and state through the formation of a secular government and drafting a godless Constitution is not shared by today’s Republican Party. A conservative Republican senator from a previous generation had this to say: “I'm frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in 'A,' 'B,' 'C,' and 'D.' Just who do they think they are? And from where do they presume to claim the right to dictate their moral beliefs to me? And I am even more angry as a legislator who must endure the threats of every religious group who thinks it has some God-granted right to control my vote on every roll call in the Senate. I am warning them today: I will fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their moral convictions to all Americans in the name of 'conservatism.'" - Barry Goldwater

I remember this event quite well. I had a print of Tank Man on my wall at work for years. I knew that as soon as the press left Beijing that the people who’d gathered in Tiananmen Square, along with their Goddess of Democracy paper mache statue, would be wiped out. Sadly, most Chinese students today have been taught from a very early age that the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre was in fact a necessary action taken against troublemakers and rioters, and not a massacre at all. There is a similar party line when it comes to Hong Kong!

p-nullifidian comments on Jun 1, 2021:
Pride, as we all know, is one of those seven deadly sins (not that I believe in sin as a construct), and it does often seem to, as the proverb says, precede a fall. That said, it seems to me that taking pride in something like skin color, or any other genetic trait in which we had no say in the matter, is simply misguided. The positive accomplishments of any individual or group of individuals should, IMHO, be celebrated by all. Human achievement uplifts humanity, not simply a subset thereof.

Not all Biblical scholars. Some who approach the topic from a purely secular and historical point of view admit that the historicity of the person described in the Canon, all miracles aside, is dubious at best. In short, there is no such thing as a miracle.

p-nullifidian comments on May 24, 2021:
Ah, but in order to trigger that willingness, we must only be told that those people who we know nothing about are not like us and pose a threat. Throughout recorded history, whether across river, mountain range, continent or the sea, we have fought and killed 'the others' simply for being of a different tribe, clan, ethnicity, religion or nation. Our teachers are our genetic propensities to destroy that which we find disquieting. Those neanderthals couldn't coexist with us homo sapiens, so they had to be hunted down and destroyed. Those Catholics had to be reformed, or suffer the consequences. To the extent that we are less prone to violence in the 21st century than we have been in the past speaks to a broad willingness to embrace the 'better angels of our nature.'
By nature men are nearly alike; by practice, they get to be wide apart. --Confucius
p-nullifidian comments on May 24, 2021:
I disagree with this. By nature we are not alike, but our practices (or cultures) attempt to unite us. To quote the Great Agnositic: "Do we not know that there are no two persons alike in the whole world? No two trees, no two leaves, no two anything that are alike? Infinite diversity is the law. Religion tries to force all minds into one mold. Knowing that all cannot believe, the church endeavors to make all say they believe. She longs for the unity of hypocrisy, and detests the splendid diversity of individuality and freedom." Robert Green Ingersoll, Individuality, 1873

The teachings and philosophy of the Buddha are, in my opinion, truer and more enlightened than those attributed in the Bible to Christ, but the very title of this book caused me, as a nullifidian, to cringe. Is secular Buddhism an oxymoron? It seems to me that Buddhism, with its monks, stories of miracles that the Buddha supposedly performed, and in some quarters a belief in a form of reincarnation or transmigration, is simply another religion. One that requires a religious devotion or faith that not even the Buddha would have endorsed--at least according to the following quote: "Do not accept any of my words on faith, Believing them just because I said them. Be like an analyst buying gold, who cuts, burns, And critically examines his product for authenticity. Only accept what passes the test By proving useful and beneficial in your life." Are there 'truths' to be found in the statements of the Buddha? I would answer, by all means, yes. But is Buddhism 'true?' As one who is without faith or religious belief, I must answer, no.

I suspect most of us here have concluded that there are no miracles, which is to say, no suspension of the laws of nature by a personal supernatural being. Absent any evidence for a personal God, that would remove the need for prayer, priests, houses of worship and the existence of practically all religions ever conceived. The only remaining belief system for the agnostic would seem to be Deism, the belief that a Supreme being, or first cause, created the universe and then left everyone alone to go off and do something else. I am not averse to this belief, as it requires nothing of us: no clergy, no doctrine and most of all, no payments! To quote Thomas Jefferson, “It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.”

In ancient times the god factories were legion, as there were likely as many gods as there were clans, bands or tribes, perhaps more.
