Relying on the Bible for moral guidance is like relying on this book for scientific understanding ... both are inappropriate.

Interesting how the same tired claims and failed arguments resurface, often pitting collective, government-sponsored decisions against individual freedoms, even when the act of asserting such freedoms inevitably leads to greater harm.

The trend has always been that the inhabitants of a country in which an advancement was made benefit from them first. One could argue that until herd immunity is achieved in the country of development, vaccines should not be widely exported, particularly in light of the fact that the costs are borne by the taxpayers. At this point, with supplies far from meeting domestic demand, isn't it more a question of priority as opposed to a premeditated denial?

Racism and Christianity, Agree or disagree, Why?
p-nullifidian comments on Feb 16, 2021:
The abolitionist movement in the US was begun by Christians who disregarded the many sections in the Bible, both Old and New Testaments, that uphold the institution of slavery--passages that were quoted from the pulpits of Christian churches in every slave holding state in the Union, prior to, during and perhaps even after the Civil War. A century later, Christians and their churches were at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement while some of the same Christian churches that had backed slavery, blatantly supported Jim Crow segregation, anti-miscegenation and racial integrity statutes and policies. Since Christianity was founded by people of the Levant, and is embraced by people of every ethnicity, I'm hard pressed to concur with Camara's statement. Christianity is a crude tool used to support opposing sides of many moral arguments. That said, the fact that the Bible isn't explicit in condemning slavery or even bigotry, enables the racist to claim to be a true Christian.

p-nullifidian comments on Feb 15, 2021:
I was raised in a strict Christian faith, with a peculiar certainty that it had 'the truth' regarding God's divine word. I began to see inconsistencies in my youth, but did my best to ignore them or explain them away with the tried and true, 'God's ways are a mystery that will be revealed in his time.' But later, much later, the cognitive dissonance caused by that 'still small voice' of reason became overwhelming, and doubt began to grow, particularly over the 'problem of evil.' The questions kept bubbling to the surface. I prayed for faith and sought to return to the source, but when re-reading the Bible carefully as an adult, found it to be an intellectual and moral outrage. Still too stubborn to admit that I was wrong, it was the simple hiddenness of God that, in the end, completed my de-conversion, some 40 years after the initial questions arose.
Could we really know everything about reality, someday?
p-nullifidian comments on Feb 15, 2021:
It seems to me that at this point in our brief developmental history we've barely scratched the surface of awareness about the universe, beginning with our own planet, the depths of which we've yet to explore. In other words, we don't even know what we don't know. Furthermore, knowledge itself--which can range from simple awareness to mastery--isn't static, as change occurs over time. It is said that omniscience is the capacity to know everything, as opposed to the learning of it. If we assume it is possible that there could come a time--should our species or the artificial intelligence that we create continue to evolve in its capacity--when all that it known of cosmology, biology, mathematics, physics and disciplines yet to be discovered might inform us of what we've yet to learn, will there ever come a time when we have achieved unqualified mastery? In an infinite universe--or perhaps multiverse--it would seem unlikely, IMHO. Thank you for this excellent thought exercise!
Where the polarity is between reality and nonreality, I’m not a centrist.
p-nullifidian comments on Feb 13, 2021:
We've been conditioned to assume that there must always be two sides to a story. So much so that in the effort to ensure a 'fair and balanced' presentation, legitimacy has been afforded to those who seek to impose their own 'alternative facts' as if such a notion were even viable. In a universe of facts and alternative facts, what is reality?
A bit of hypocrisy by Matt Dillahunty?
p-nullifidian comments on Feb 12, 2021:
There were already abolitionists writing and speaking out against slavery during the 18th century, though they were a minority. The most strident opponents of slavery viewed this 'institution' as a sin against God and man, and tended to be Quakers. But these views were clearly not respected by slaveholders who used their Bibles to justify the practice. Thus the Constitution reflects the compromises that were made in order to form the new Republic. Was it immoral? From the standpoint of many at the time, including the enslaved, it was! Has it been changed to address this shortcoming? Yes, and I would argue that the 14th Amendment (Equal Protection) was just as important as the 13th, as it has frequently been used by the courts to broaden civil rights and freedoms. The Bible, on the other hand, was never changed by a jot or a tittle to account for its immoralities, even when afforded the chance, via a new religion, to do so. "Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ." Ephesians 6:5 "Slaves, in reverent fear of God submit yourselves to your masters, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh." 1 Peter 2:18 "Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them," Titus 2:9 "All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect, so that God’s name and our teaching may not be slandered." 1 Timothy 6:1

p-nullifidian comments on Feb 11, 2021:
Ah yes, Anselm's Ontological Argument for the existence of God, one of apologist William Lane Craig's favorites. In her excellent book, "36 Arguments for the Existence of God: A Work of Fiction," Rebecca Newberger Goldstein lays out the argument: 1. Nothing greater than God can be conceived (this is stipulated as part of the definition of "God"). 2. It is greater to exist than not to exist. 3. If we conceive of God as not existing, then we can conceive of something greater than God (from 2). 4. To conceive of God as not existing is not to conceive of God (from 1 and 3). 5. It is inconceivable that God not exist (from 4). 6. God exists. And then debunks it nicely. "FLAW: It was Immanuel Kant who pinpointed the fallacy in the Ontological Argument: it is to treat "existence" as a property, like "being fat" or "having ten fingers." The Ontological Argument relies on a bit of wordplay, assuming that "existence" is just another property, but logically it is completely different. If you really could treat "existence" as just part of the definition of the concept of God, then you could just as easily build it into the definition of any other concept. We could, with the wave of our verbal magic wand, define a trunicorn as "a horse that [a] has a single horn on its head, and [b] exists." So if you think about a trunicorn, you're thinking about something that must, by definition, exist; therefore trunicorns exist. This is clearly absurd: we could use this line of reasoning to prove that any figment of our imagination exists."
This pertains to both religion and politics, but mostly religion.

p-nullifidian comments on Feb 6, 2021:
Of course, but then I wake up from the fantasy. It stands to reason that one of the universal premises behind the invention of religion involves an afterlife where we will be reunited with those we love. But I'm more interested in the mechanics of this entire process. What form would one's existence in this afterlife assume? How is one recognized if not in "the flesh?" And if restored in "the flesh" at what age are we to live the rest of eternity? I for one don't want to be restored as an old fart. And what about those who died in infancy? Do they stay as babies forever, or do they age? What is the process of aging throughout eternity anyway? What about a sibling or a friend who died in our youth? Do we see them as they were, or do we return to the moment they died, in their eyes? If the mechanisms and processes for the afterlife were perhaps better understood as a process, might we all want to take a pass on the concept?

p-nullifidian comments on Feb 4, 2021:
Well stated, indeed! Wars of extermination were "God's creation." Few devout Christians or Jews would countenance such behavior today. Even the pagans had better morals than this. Did any Caesar order such a command as Jehovah's? "...in the cities of the nations the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes. Completely destroy them—the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites—as the Lord your God has commanded you." Deuteronomy 20:16-17 (NIV) No wonder that the Great Agnostic himself responded with such disdain to that very passage: "Is it possible for man to conceive of anything more perfectly infamous? Can you believe that such directions were given by any being except an infinite fiend? Remember that the army receiving these instructions was one of invasion. Peace was offered upon condition that the people submitting should be the slaves of the invader; but if any should have the courage to defend their homes, to fight for the love of wife and child, then the sword was to spare none -- not even the prattling, dimpled babe. And we are called upon to worship such a God; to get upon our knees and tell him that he is good, that he is merciful, that he is just, that he is love." Robert Green Ingersoll, The Gods, 1872

p-nullifidian comments on Feb 1, 2021:
In my experience, beliefs don't require emotions, but personal assumptions almost demand them. I believe the sun will rise, as predicted, tomorrow--I have never seen or heard of a day when this did not happen, and I have no reason to doubt this belief. I have a working assumption that when I board the airplane, I will arrive safely--I understand that there is a possibility that this may not occur, but also understand this to be a very low probability. My belief that the sun will rise, as has been predicted, requires no emotional input, whatsoever. The same cannot be said regarding my working assumption that my flight will arrive uneventfully, particularly when we encounter unexpected turbulence! ;-)

In his 2009 book, "Idiot America: How Stupidity Became a Virtue in the Land of the Free," Charles Pierce cites the research of Professor Andrew Cline of Washington University in St. Louis, who came up with 4 rules for modern pundits, some of whom appear to have advised Trump and his minions: 1. Never be dull. 2. Embrace willfully ignorant simplicity. 3. The American public is stupid--treat them that way. 4. Always ignore the facts and the public record when it is convenient to do so. While it might seem as though recent events point to a turning tide, one cannot ever count out Idiot America, whose zombie-like stubbornness is surpassed only by its lack of intellectual curiosity!

John 14:6 "He who believes in the Son has eternal life; he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God rests upon him." John 3:36 "Be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by him this man is standing before you well. This is the stone which was rejected by you builders, but which has become the head of the corner. "We keep on being told that religion, whatever its imperfections, at least instills morality.
p-nullifidian comments on Jan 28, 2021:
As we evolve, so do our moral codes. We know that religions were created by human beings, as opposed to the interventions of an enlightened deity. We know this because no religion has ever been morally / ethically in advance of the people and ideas of the time. Consider for a moment just how many consecrated acts and commands found in so-called holy texts are now viewed as immoral. To reiterate, we know that morals are evolved simply by observing empathy and reciprocity--two foundational principles of our morals--at work in the actions of other animals. When it comes to morality, religion loses yet another toe hold.

That's a shame. It's sad how the human mind works, sometimes. Faith enables people to accept ideas and concepts that would tear us apart, and actually run counter to our intuitions. When I became a parent, as my children grew up, I went from being a rigid, know-it-all hard ass to an open-minded softy, which affected everything from my politics to my religion, and eventual lack thereof. Your post immediately called to mind this quote, from one of my heroes, the Great Agnostic. "The church has been, and still is, the great robber. She has rifled not only the pockets but the brains of the world. She is the stone at the sepulchre of liberty; the upas tree, in whose shade the intellect of man has withered; the Gorgon beneath whose gaze the human heart has turned to stone. Under her influence even the Protestant mother expects to be happy in heaven, while her brave boy, who fell fighting for the rights of man, shall writhe in hell." What the orthodox faithful may never understand is the difference between belief and identity. They hold the opinion that what they believe in is "who they are," while castigating as "sinners" those whose sexual identity doesn't square with their worldview. That said, it would seem likely that, in the hearts and minds of most Christians, a fear and loathing remains--they hate the sinner for who and what they are, not for what they do.
Irony is a bitch.

And Trump's dumping his basket on the Capitol and the statehouses.
And it may be very soon :-) I’m looking forward to a nice, boring administration. You?

A wonderful thought ... we've inoculated ourselves against further spread of the COVID president!
Is this mean?
p-nullifidian comments on Jan 14, 2021:
Not mean at all! I've despised and loathed the arrogant ass since the 80's when he was a Democrat. A spoiled brat of a man clearly raised without boundaries and never having been taught right from wrong, he was the most morally and ethically unfit candidate that the GOP could have chosen. Deep down inside, even those who voted for this pretender could envision how this would end. After all he has done, and never being held to account, it is my fervent hope to see him sporting an orange prison jumpsuit to match his complexion!

I completely agree with Dan Dennett in his book, *Breaking the Spell,* that religion should be dissected, probed, compared and analyzed scientifically in the schools. Once students are made aware of the commonalities of unfounded, non-scientific beliefs and fictions found in nearly all religions, they will be free to consider them as they would all other myths, legends, tales and fables.
This describes a lot of subjects, honestly.

Great Euler diagram! Animal Farm was required reading at my high school ... I still remember that line "All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others."
I still have a lot of old Christian friends in my Facebook posts.
p-nullifidian comments on Jan 10, 2021:
Having once been a Christian, I was initially bewildered by the mastery that Trump has over these people. As a Christian I understood the concept of the ends not justifying the means and the dangers of making Faustian bargains. But then I realized that Christians who outwardly profess the importance of living a virtuous life, while embracing and even submitting to a man who represents the very antithesis of honesty, propriety, integrity and decency, could mean only one thing—they have become radicalized, just as the orthodox extremists of any other faith or ideology. And that is why they are dangerous and must be dealt with.
Does time exist, or it is just an illusion? 🤔
p-nullifidian comments on Jan 10, 2021:
It's a great question. I used to think of time in absolute terms, as if it didn't require us to define it. And then I read a fascinating book by Alan Burdick, "Why Time Flies," which I highly recommend to this group.

Betsy, Betsy, Betsy ... you hitched your wagon to the wrong ox! In any case, your home state of Michigan isn't the state your Amway dad-in-law founder knew. Too bad for you ... as an ideal plutocrat, who knows what you might have done with four more years? Bwahahaha!

He is spot on ... too many videos out there of law enforcement members acting 'chummy' with members of the mob.
Now is an optimal time to have a huge Tarring and Feathering extravaganza.

Mob vengeance for the mob? Personally, if we're going to resort to old style public punishments, I'd prefer the stocks. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stocks#/media/File:Stocks_(PSF).png

I have a brother-in-law who's a conservative Catholic Republican and won't touch the National Catholic Reporter. His religious rag of choice is the other NCR (National Catholic Register). Suffice to say, I was actually relieved that the pandemic gave my wife and me a good reason not to get together over the holidays, even if I did miss the opportunity to needle the guy over the results of the election.

p-nullifidian comments on Jan 7, 2021:
Indeed. When one replays the events of the day, one wonders if the entire episode was theater. But we might also wonder when and if law enforcement in this country will ever get it. This 'free pass' surely hasn't gone unnoticed by any number of angry white males who know explosives and want to become the next Timothy McVeigh (Oklahoma City) or Anthony Warner (Nashville). I saw lots of backpacks that made it into the Capitol chambers today, obviously without going through a metal detector. It's only a mater of time before an aspiring domestic terrorist takes advantage of his white privilege, blends in with the crowd and blows something up.

In both the operational and parliamentary meaning of the term, it would seem so, at least when it comes to the executive branch of government! But our Constitution endures, and our nation is capable of surviving the most despicable and destructive president ever elected into office.
So what a day today was.
p-nullifidian comments on Jan 6, 2021:
While I agree with your sentiments, to compare what we saw today with the plight of those who stormed the Bastille, after living under centuries of oppression at the hands of monarchs, elevates the former while demeaning the latter.
My friend insists this picture was funny and meme worthy.

Probably best not to reveal this Trumpist's identity, or he'll be pardoned for sure, if for no other reason than he appears to be trotting around with Nancy Pelosi's lectern.
