@Julie808 Contractors here work in a funny way. There is no competition and all have about the same rates. This includes costs + 6%. We had the shell of the first phase done which went 50% over budget (the contractor was forced to eat $9K due to his lack of diligence. We then found a contractor off island and he not only did what we wanted (I did a lot of the construction) but gave us a 10% discount on items he bought at a wholesaler. He also did a lot of extra things.

@Julie808 C. Hitchens once worked for her (probably to see how she really worked) and wrote a book, "The Missionary Position." 60 Minutes also did an expose' and showed how she took a perfectly good building and made it dangerous. She did not want her volunteers to have luxuries as elevators and had them disconnected. A lot of other things she did went against code and she was forced to leave. This is how zealots work. I wonder how she would feel about tRump and his (faux) promotion of Christianity.

@Julie808 Sorry to hear about Alki. Alki was our go to place while living in W. Seattle. Of course it became more and more popular. It was called the Venice Beach of Washington state but, as such, it became a hassle to keep up with the products which, I imagine, had to be outsourced and mass produced. This is the first I've heard of one ferry, already at a terminal having to back off and waiting. Usually the arriving ferry had to wait. However, at this time the system is a mess. New rules are coming in to make the system more efficient and, I suspect this is one of them. Funny thing, when one lives on a real island (not one connected by a bridge) there are limits. Of course the business people don't seem to see this and sustainable simply means constant growth. I did get you message and replied. It seems my two closest friends are throwing in the towel and permanently relocating to their condo on the Big island (Hawaii). They have daughters with kids both in Berkeley and Langley and will come for visits. Maintaining their properties have become too onerous (and with me as well). Here's a video of a home tour last year and they are the first ones in the 'round' house. It's a bit confusing as there's a 2nd home under the carving studio. They built this home entirely. Chuck is a retired physicist and a contractor (and an over builder and perfectionist). This place will be hard to sell as it is unique with only one bedroom in the main house with another in a basement (which is inaccessible from the main house). https://youtu.be/x-yOVuW1Pkw

Since you often visit this area you might know of a great business journalist named Jon Talton. He published an item in last Sunday's Times titled Boeing and Wall Street. This is about companies all vying to get on the stock market and delivering short term returns to shareholders. Unfortunately we are all complicit in this race to the bottom as we have come to depend on investments to finance our retirements. It's not about services or products but profits especially for those at the top. These people do not want to pay taxes and see government regulations as being a limiting factor to their profits. The article talked about both Roosevelt presidents trying to bust the out of control moguls. Little has changed and those at the top want to reign totally. It's a fantastic article which points in the direction we are headed. The one thing the republicans tried to do was get rid of Biden's attempt to finance the IRS to be able to go after the 'loopholes' and scammers. This is telling. When the rich get tax breaks the deficit goes up and services for the masses goes down. There has been talk of reducing Social Security and Medicare.

@Marionville Sorry, it's been a while since I responded but some issues with my property forced me to put my energies elsewhere. This is becoming a common issue among many of us of a 'certain age' in that property maintenance has become too much and we need to look at a more viable life change. I agree with you comments but also realize there are often more at stake. As I said in my original comment what's going on now applies to all life forms. *"The phenomenon is best explained as an ecological response that naturally sets in for a population when that species’ population is nearing the limits of its habitat’s carrying capacity. The pressures of the limits to growth aren’t necessarily what’s causing it; rather, a species’ tendency to see its members cluster together as a resource acquisition and sharing strategy increases that species’ average population density."* The global human population growth rate is falling and it is the constant growth based economic system that is in panic and trying to reverse the trend. Religion is often used as a weapon but so are other tactics. In thins country the attempt to outlaw abortion was seen as a way to increase our numbers but the reverse is happening. It is not a simple situation.

@Marionville That works in a developed country but most of the time women in undeveloped countries don't have a choice or sometimes even know that such options, as birth control even exist. In many counties even birth control is illegal (and maybe even here if SCROTUS gets a chance to change the law). I have been using that term as our Supreme Court still has 3 (women) who are sane and vote as true justices. I just received a newsletter by a, now (it was once a fringe group but has become more influential) group known as Negative Population Growth https://npg.org/ Their latest newsletter was titled *"In praise of population decline"* and was about how changing world circumstances are driving a lower fertility rates globally. Here is a portion of that newsletter *"The phenomenon is best explained as an ecological response that naturally sets in for a population when that species’ population is nearing the limits of its habitat’s carrying capacity. The pressures of the limits to growth aren’t necessarily what’s causing it; rather, a species’ tendency to see its members cluster together as a resource acquisition and sharing strategy increases that species’ average population density. This then amplifies the stress factors that individuals in that population must deal with. In these more crowded conditions, the “cost of living” for individuals increases. It takes more time and effort to acquire resources competitively. It becomes more difficult to find available or adequate nesting grounds. Organisms tend to cluster together because this makes life easier initially, but eventually, the crowding becomes too much and life becomes more difficult instead – something works until it doesn’t work anymore. As population density increases, these stress factors compel those individuals, both behaviorally and biologically, to give birth to fewer offspring in an effort to alleviate this stress. Ecologists call this density dependence, and this force has been found to influence population dynamics for nearly all organisms on Earth. There is an expanding body of evidence that shows density dependence – simply put, rising population density – is the force behind globally collapsing birth rates. That is the ecological reason for falling birth rates."* *"Here are the sociological explanations: stress, fear, and anxiety about the future. It is true that science, philosophy, reason and the modern popular consensus on morals and human rights, often disagree with the teachings of religion. But it is also true, that even where they do agree with religious teaching, they often provide far stronger proofs for those points of agreement. Which in at least, one way that is actually perhaps even more important than the disagreements. In this world that we live in, where humans exist in service to the economy, those humans are working longer and harder for this “growth first and foremost” model economy, and for far less pay when weighed against inflation. Their cost of living – especially housing – soars and soars with each passing year, especially in jurisdictions where population expansion is outstripping home construction, as it always does and ...

@Gwen_Wanderer Basic fact is that women's brains are wired differently than men: *"The male brain is wired from front to back, with few connections across the two hemispheres. Funny, but I'm a huge fan of the video series "Grantchester" In the new season the detectives wife is having 'issues' and been put on tranquilizers which has also changed her personality. @Betty You've hit on a very, very complicated issue. Have you ever heard of the 'Trolley Problem?" I have a book on this subject and it can get really complicated. We have a local issue here concerning deer. These islands are mainly agricultural (and tourists). Ours is the flattest of all the islands (it is not flat, though) and has a history of being the breadbasket for this part of the state. So large predators are not allowed as it might harm the animals raised here. Therefore, the local deer population has exploded. People, like myself have fenced off large portions of out property to keep the deer from eating our plants. Therefore a lot of deer starve. Some actually feed the deer but, to me, that actually makes the problem worse. A fed deer is a deer that has off spring who, eventually, will also starve. Nature is red in claw and tooth to help maintain a balance but we humans come along and mess everything up. Occasionally, nature intervenes and sends a plague to the animals that have over-bred (A couple of years ago a lot of our overabundant rabbits died from some illness). They are now making a comeback until the next pandemic. I hope I'm not sounding like a mans plainer but I find this subject extremely interesting. https://youtu.be/bOpf6KcWYyw

Right now we are the prime source for funding and weaponry to Ukraine. More and more, some (and I use the word lightly) are starting to see we are all in this together and the domino's are falling so we need to make a unified effort to stop the destruction wrought on nature. For example, the Nature Conservancy and National Geographic are US corps. but have a positive global, positive impact. This morning I read that a new pipeline terminus, Kinder-Morgan, has been completed in Canada (BC) that will multiply huge oil tankers in my area, the Salish Sea (the term was given due to a joint decision by both Canada and the US). This is the area that will be most affected by tankers and container shipping to China. https://www.seadocsociety.org/about-the-salish-sea

Unfortunately, more and more are subscribing to the everybody lies trap and is creating a world that is increasingly dangerous, violent and is destroying life on this planet. Fortunately, there are still many of us who absolutely do not pedal to this crap. @Marionville Unfortunately, the problem is much more complicated. Years ago I sat in on a town Hall (Seattle) question on whether or not to make English the national language. There was a huge crowd and they were segregated into the yes and no side. There were 2 Latino on the no side and they kept spouting racism. A woman across the aisle leaned over and told me these guys were making her so mad she about changing sides (to the yes side). There were 2 women on the yes side. One was Chinese who represented the UN. She said it is perfectly normal for countries to have a basic language and some countries like Switzerland have 3 or more. The other woman represented the Seattle school district. She said there were 130+ different languages being spoken in the district. Some were very rare. The districts hire IA (instructor assistants) to help but with these unusual languages the rules are waived so long as they spoke the language. She went on to say with all the translations, nighttime classes to learn English, programs as bootstrap (slow immersion in English) and many more the district was financially strapped. Money was being taken from special ed to fund all the needs of the immigrant population (which included special ed). My late partner was an elementary teacher for an international school in Seattle and almost every day I heard stories. One was unbelievable. People don't realize it costs a lot of money to education non-citizens. To many it just another racist, emotional issue. It is not. This is just on small example of the problems the world is having trying to assimilate more and more of us. That's what that study is all about. It's more probable that the catlick church is telling them to reproduce like rabbits. They need donors to restock their revenue, from all the lost parishioners that have abandoned such foolishness.
pedigojr replies on May 27, 2024:
But with the increasing population and poverty the number of donors is decreasing. racocon8 below, highlighted the o. that are Christian.

pamagain comments on May 25, 2024:
Traditionally, African cultures have viewed the number of children in a family as an indicator of the husband's ''masculinity." As traditional farming is reduced, this leaves fewer opportunities for young men in large families to inherit land and social systems are changing. In the 30 years that ...

I have put one group that deals with this issue in my will. It's Engenderhealth. https://www.engenderhealth.org/ They have a program call MAP (men as partners). It discusses the reality of things you mentioned. The increased 'masculinity' has led to an increase in STD's and starving children. What kind of 'man' are you when your kids are starving and you are spreading diseases to others!?

Finally, there seems to be some justice in the world. Maybe the word will get around and people will think twice before taking on any cases from tRump. What would be fantastic would to see some of SCROTUS (Supreme Court republicans of the US) members get disciplined.

puff comments on May 17, 2024:
An upside down flag is a sign of distress. My understanding is it comes from sea faring days as a way for a ship in distress to notify others. Pirates used to do it to attract unsuspecting ships who were then attacked. Here are the Australian protocols. ...
pedigojr replies on May 18, 2024:
Maybe the tRump supporters have been convinced this is a time of distress. It is but not what his supporters think but simply because of their total lack of thinking skills.

@Aaron70 Of course some may not understand how much we already focus on the most destructive and invasive species on this planet. Any form of science research has both good and bad implications. Being nearsighted toward the sciences only adds to our already overblown conspiracies. https://www.nasa.gov/humans-in-space/benefits-to-humanity/

Nevermind the fact that a lot of supposedly non-human research actually helps our species. I would also add that too much emphasis on 'humans' has created a nightmare scenario for non-human species and our species as well.

I for one am glad to see there are limits to Biden's support of Israel. Granted Israel was attacked and has a right to defend itself, but they should not be using "defense" as en excuse to further their own aggression(s).

The problem has become few trust (or even understand) there are people who dedicate their lives to journalism. Ethics are a major part of journalism. Unfortunately, in today's world many are in it for the money and could care less about ethics. I also have a variety of sources, PBS (NPR), some major networks (a recent video on Dan Rather was very enlightening) and the Sunday edition of the Seattle Times. Friends, family and neighbors too often simply give information which is simply self-fulfilling. It's basically gossip.

@pamagain Her kids were the main source of her estate. She was a huge believer and felt it necessary to confirm her change with her kids. When I made my change my daughter was not yet back in my life. An example: her older brother once asked her to sponsor his and his family coming to the US. He was well off living and working in Dubai. He was getting ready to retire but would have to go back (including his family) to Iran when he retired. There would be little life for the family in Iran. She said no. Reason being #1 her younger brother had asked that previously. She knew he was lazy and she would be supporting him from then on. They were already in Iran and okay. She could not say no to one brother and yes to the other. Besides he had another option (which he took) to go to Canada. He did and the whole family is now in Vancouver BC which, coincidentally is the center for Iranians in Canada. Everyone (kids included) are very successful there.
