It's fair enough that those who are left behind fondly remember their loved ones after they passed away. Meanwhile, many people want to be remembered after they die, don't they? Why do you think that is? Do you want to be remembered after you're gone? I'm just wondering.

I seriously doubt my late partner even cared. From early on she was taught to question everything (from her illiterate, Moslem mother). She was told she was like her maternal grandfather who stood out as a sort of questioner and trouble maker. From an early age she realized religion was silly and couldn't understand how people believed all this crap. At the same time she understood the life/death connection. She never wanted anyone to bring attention to her (she had to do this herself) and this included after her death which turned out to be an ideal death and she appreciated the gift she was given up to the very end. She gave her body to the will body program and being able to help with research was the only attention she wanted.

@silverotter11 Interesting as I know (or knew) the studio. It had a walk in kiln. My 2nd partner was into ceramics and went there often. The CC also had a pool. I had seen other streets were put on a 'road diet.' This is where 3 or four lanes were turned to two with a center lane for turning. After we left a large portion of 35th Ave SW was made into such a street which lowered the speed and some noise from the street. The speed limit was 25mph but almost no one followed that. The street had gotten into such a sad state of repair I often took another street (Delridge) to avoid it. Just for fun let me post some photos of my old house. The first one shows the Palm and next to that is a Plum, I also planted and the 2nd shows the Monkey Puzzle tree I planted (it was about 4' then). Just behind that (to the left) s a Eucalyptus and that enormous tree is a Bay Laurel. I had no ideal it could get that big. When I pruned the whole area smelled of Bay. You can see the Palm in the background.

@pamagain No one knows what will happen in the future. However, some of us try to look ahead and mitigate any future problems. When one moves to an area that has a history of storms the onus is on them. We should not be responsible for others failings. Yes, bad things can and do happen to people who try and plan ahead. A recent case you are describing was the fires in California where hundreds were left homeless. The way I see it we are responsible for our own citizens not the rest of the world. Taking in millions (the number is approx 2 million a year) of people from other countries will only make things harder for us. Most of us agree we should not be the worlds policeman but, we must also not be the world's social workers. We have enough problems at home.

Might be some pushback on that. It would be good to try and control the hyper testosterone driven males until they reach maturity (whenever that is). One Sheriff in a small town was asked how he would reduce crime in his area. He said to lock up all males until they were 35. I had a younger brother who was always getting into petty crimes. When he was in his 60's (he went on to become a lawyer) I asked him why he did all the things he did. He told me he asks himself that all the time. He just doesn't know, he just did. Who knows maybe excess testosterone turns males into zombies.

I worked downtown (2 Union Sq.) and spent a lot of time at the market. Things were different then. I did a lot of construction work and the no. one item was climbing on people's roofs and installing TV antennas. Getting this in our apartment in the old city was a big treat. I know how you feel but there's a lot of good stuff on TV. PBS and even Netflix have a lot to offer and not just for entertainment but knowledge as well. I can picture that huge TV. My late partner also had such a TV. Since it was the old style cathode ray variety, she named it her 'big Butt' TV. Later, a friend gave us her older flat screen (no butt) which had a larger screen and much better picture. I put it in a cabinet so when not in use it's not seen. Before we left in 2011 it was still a great place to live. It has changed, though.

@puff The huge problem is that too many, shallow, weak and cowardly politicians (I think we all know who is meant here) use this time as a photo op and show gullible fools they really care (when they do not). Therefore this sort of thing is and should be against the rules and decent politicians follow it. When someone who calls military people (especially when they are killed in battle) losers (when they themselves got daddy to pay for a bogus deferment) only reflects on them and the fools that believe they are sincere. I was i the military during the Viet Nam era. I could have been sent to that war, but was not. However, it cost me two extra years of service. I did get injured and spent 9 months in a military hospital and am now disabled. Still, if I were injured or killed in a war zone I would really be upset for someone like tRump to be using my situation as a way to feign care in order to get fools to vote for him. Biden and other decent politicians will not use others sufferings for their own gain. Where was 'W' whose stupidity started the whole debacle by first invading Iraq (which had nothing to do with 9/11 but was simply to avenge Saddam's attempt to kill his father after the first Iraq war) and then finally going into Afghanistan? Everyone here needs to remember it was tRump who first started the pullout and did so in such a way the Democrats could not stop it.

Those seats were sooo nice one had a hard time getting off. One could control the water (spray, temp) and even the drying temps. @Marionville Unfortunately, especially among introverts, we sometimes have difficulty understanding how others feel about what we say or do. I think for most men, mansplaining is not intentional but just our nature. It's another thing we have to learn to first recognize the problem and then pay attention to how we present knowledge we may have acquired. Some areas of which I've become passionate about I can get carried away and not think about how my explaining is going over. A former, long term partner, (before my last one) was good in English and helped me write letters. She said I may know something about a subject but I have to present my knowledge and, at the same time, be cognizant that others may not know what I'm talking about. Her knowledge of spelling and grammar also helped a lot. Once I got published in various medias I was hooked. With my late partner English was her 2nd language (which she did not learn until her mid-20's). She had almost no accent but writing was often difficult for her. In Farsi there are no or few adjectives. When she wrote or spoke she often left off the adjectives. As an extreme extrovert she became the speak and I the writer. We made our personality differences work.

@Marionville The artical went on to say a very few got this through brain damage but with the overwhelming number it was a genetic defect. As I said I often wonder if there are several genes involved as some, as I, an introvert, have trouble associating names and faces whereas others (extroverts) remember everyone once they have met them. My late partner was such a person and it often amazed me. When I was still going to mass a priest (who I liked as he was different) would walk up and down the aisles shaking hands and greeting people by name. If there was a new person he would ask their name, think for a second and it would be imprinted for the next time he met them.

The one thing on the rise in Japan is energy use due to the use of machines as robots. The huge problem with our 'cornucopian' based economists is they are loath to change habits. It was shown the first new VW bug model almost didn't get made as the industry thought such a change would fail and cause the industry to crash. We all know how this has now created a trend. The thing that cost VW a huge price was their deceit in the pollution levels from their cars. When the Roman empire was crashing, due to the governments inability to manage and serve a large number of people coming into Rome from the outlying areas, there was a loss in Roman citizens and, of course the government tried to push the citizens to have more kids. pedigojr replies on Aug 19, 2024:
The major problem with desalination is it takes a huge amount of energy. This is what's used in desert countries like Dubai. They have the oil and the energy. The question for me is what happens to all the salt that's extracted? People living here along the coast (usually the wealthy) have been having salt water intrusion in their wells for years and some have joined up to install a desal system. It's pretty expensive water. I've installed a rain catchment system which is pure water (my well is very hard with lots of iron). The only issue is one must practice water conservation during the dry summer months.

Among a lot of other things. I heard a report on NPR this morning and looked it up. However, I found two things and one is his criticisms of Walz serving in Iraq but in a non-combat role. *"Vice presidential candidate JD Vance has recently criticized the military service record of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, his opponent in the 2024 election."* *"Vance argued that Walz’s retirement ahead of his National Guard Unit’s deployment to Iraq and his implication that he served in a combat zone suggested “stolen valor garbage.” Stolen valor is a serious accusation in military circles that refers to someone making false claims about their service. Ohio Sen. JD Vance served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a combat correspondent for nearly four years, according to a spokesperson for the Marines. Vance spent six months in Iraq during his time with the Marines. His deployment began in August 2005 and ended in February 2006, the Marines spokesperson confirmed. But Vance did not experience combat in Iraq and has not publicly claimed that he did."* The subject of the NPR story this morning was about his book:"Hillbilly Elegy." *"Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis, the 2016 memoir from Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance, once again began flying off the shelves after former President Donald Trump named Vance as his running mate. Many have turned to the memoir to find out the story of Vance’s upbringing, a core part of why he’s on the Republican ticket to begin with. But the book also brings along a host of assumptions that many authors still find not to be true."* *"Pulitzer-winning author Barbara Kingsolver said she felt that it was her duty to tell a different story of Appalachian life than the one that Vance presented in the book."* *“It used the same old victim-blaming trope. It was like a hero story: ‘I got out of here, I went to Yale,’” Kingsolver said of Vance. “‘But those lazy people, you know, just don't have ambitions. They don’t have brains. That’s why they’re stuck where they are.’ I disagree. And that’s my job, to tell a different story.”* https://www.kpbs.org/news/national/2024/08/17/hillbilly-elegy-is-back-in-the-spotlight-these-appalachians-write-a-different-tale So depend on those 'lazy' and 'no brained' people for votes but then mock them behind their backs. My daughter told me when her doofus husband wears the hearing aids (not often) they have good talks but when not they get into a fight. This fool hasn't figured that out. My problem is, being her parent, it's hard for me to interfere with her marriage. Fortunately, I do have some leverage. In the end I got her to seek a therapist, which she did and really likes. This way a third party can help her understand she needs to escape a rotten marriage. We have a super idiot here, Dwight. He is a raving tRump supporter and when one gets off the ferry and is coming from the woods to an open place they see a shed belonging to Dwight. That shed has a lot of tRump flags, American flags and even a tRump 2020 sign. It bothers us as people think we're a MAGA island which is just the opposite of what we are. Ron pretends to be a friend of Dwight and often harasses him (Dwight broke the law and is under a court order to not get into any more trouble or he will be jailed). Ron asked Dwight what he thought about Kamala. Dwight didn't want to talk about it and seemed very upset. Ron kept goading him (he absolutely hates tRump) but Dwight said nothing.

My big problem is why, knowing what a hypocritical POS Musk is do so many still use 'X'? Why give this guy more ...

@silverotter11 Like sooo many things in their weak minds it must be bad and something no could possibly want. I strongly suspect it is something of which most MAGA maggots have no idea of what it means. Sort of like antifa. I once told an (ex) friend the MAGA crowd was so stupid they didn't know what it meant. He pretended to think and then asked, what does it mean? I then knew he was either totally clueless or one of them.
I am really enjoying this.

I think a lot of us feel the same way. I for one, would love to see a debate between Kamala, a former prosecuting attorney and Trump a former (and still) a criminal.

@TomMcGiverin Or the simple fact she is a woman and, in his book, women are for one thing only (but only if he finds her his type).

@pamagain Their egos are so huge they think they are a gods gift to humanity. Problem is, they are totally unaware of the real world. Years ago I attended a book discussion by a couple. The book was titled "Common Fire." I was about how evolution tends toward more complexity and more and more humans become specialists in a certain field to deal with the complexities. However, focusing on a certain aspect of a subject one misses the bigger picture. One literally focuses on a tree and misses the forest. The topic became so popular it was re-written but different authors. A lot of moneyed people have focused on acquiring wealth but cannot see what that wealth does to their persona or the affect on the wider world. Money is their focus and not the wider world. Notice one item by these wealthy conservatives is a total denial of climate change or any other environmental problem.
A recent posting by a group indivisible talked about the project 2025.

ALL of us should forward this on to friends & family, asking them to read it & forward it on, also. I'm worried about these comments he's making about ''You don't need to vote....I have enough votes already."

@puff Knowing thy enemy does not always mean saddling up to them (it could also be a she). With Trump no matter what you do once you show your true colors you are under the bus. He is so self aggrandizing one has to constantly bow down and kiss his ass. That is asking too much of any self-respecting person. How much did Churchill and FDR kiss up to Hitler!? Knowing ones enemy often means fighting them with all one has at their disposal.

If true, then Elon Musk is morally bankrupt, and he needs to be financially bankrupted.
pedigojr replies on Jul 31, 2024:
This is what money does to some people. It would be interesting to know of his family upbringing. Bill Gates' dad was wealthy but advocated to the wealthy to be a force for good in a society. Their foundation seeks to do just that.

I think Elon has his own personal version of racial bias and misogyny. He creeps me out.

He is starting to creep a lot of people out. I guess with 10 kids his wife (or harem) is not one of the childless, cat ladies.

Thank you for this. One thing I noticed is political ads must disclose they are AI generated. So here's another case for the small, fine print hidden at the bottom of the screen.

All one needs to do is look around at the things they propose. Here there is a moneyed guy, Brian Heywood, from Arizona who moved here and started a voter initiative to get rid of our Climate Change rules and eliminate the capital gains tax for tow of several. Some were tossed out as being against the laws. Bill Gates started countering this guys attempts. The guy then complained he was being targeted by big money? Talk about hypocritical and laughable! Here's a link to one of his initiative's https://ballotpedia.org/Washington_Initiative_2109,_Repeal_Capital_Gains_Tax_Initiative_(2024)

"The agency (FBI) said in a statement: "What struck former President Trump in the ear was a bullet, whether whole or fragmented into smaller pieces, fired from the deceased subject’s rifle." Oh yeah? What would be the forensic basis for making that statement? Did said bullet also leave the two ...

I had thought of that and, obviously, did others. It would then make him a living martyr.
