phxbillcee comments on Feb 13, 2018:
I admire & applaud those who can really understand & are comfortable with math, it's just not me, unfortunately. I am pretty good with words, even some of the "denser" philosophers, & I realize that math, either "pure" or applied, as in engineering, is essential to so much of our world & our technology. I just don't have that talent, & it saddens me. But good teachers, especially those that teach at introductory levels in physics & higher math, can do so much to steer those with that potential comprehension into knowledge & understanding. I salute all teachers, no matter the subject, & I am so glad that people will still get into this field even tho the rewards are shrinking, both financially & in respect!
Masturbation might not be sex but it damn sure is good enough in the meantime.

Funeral without religion?
phxbillcee comments on Feb 10, 2018:
I don't know if there is anything you can do. You can make your wishes known, & maybe have someone that you trust speak & stress your position, but if a relative feels that they "just have to" go the religion route, it would be tough to shut them down without causing an incident, which probably isn't either worth it, or what any of the mourners would want. You can only hope for the best, &, if by chance it does come about, be secure in the knowledge that you will have not a single inkling of its occurrence!!!
Am I still single because my face is that hideous?
phxbillcee comments on Feb 10, 2018:
Sarah, you are NOT hideous! Neither physically or mentally. I have read many of your posts & responses & you are a beautiful soul & a caring person. I also have read how, maybe because of your insecurity, you've let men abuse you & take advantage of you. Please, don't. Do not allow some jerk to shame you just because he pretends to like you! Take your time, I won't guarantee that you will find true love, but knowing that you are a great person, really knowing that, may at least keep you from the assholes & with more "positive" around you will draw more positive guys, & people in general. Hell, this site may work for you, don't despair if it hasn't yet, you are surely not the only one in that boat. Patience, my dear! & know, we that have begun to know you on this site cherish you, & wish you only the best!

I'd like a bigger "member" & a bit smaller gut. Never had the tummy problem 'til just the last few years, & even the worry over my "size" is recent. I knew I wasn't huge, I'm only 5'6" so am in proportion, but it seems, at least over the "media" that women are saying they care much more about this than most guys thought. Since foreplay has always been part of my repertoire I've never had "complaints", but now I'm questioning myself! Also, I have some circulation issues now, so I'm getting some varicose veins in the lower legs & feet. Not the most attractive. Thankfully my sharp wit, sparkling personality & boyish good looks compensates for all that!!!
“In God We Trust” motto, national anthem should both go
phxbillcee comments on Feb 10, 2018:
I agree with the article cited here. "E Pluribus Unum" should be returned as the national motto & I like the idea Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land" as the anthem!
“In God We Trust” motto, national anthem should both go
phxbillcee comments on Feb 10, 2018:
Both "In God We Trust" on our money & "Under God" in the pledge was added in the 1950's during the "Cold War". I'd love to see them removed as I personally think they're unconstitutional & presumptuous.

Today I interviewed for a job as a caregiver for the elderly.
phxbillcee comments on Feb 9, 2018:
They did give you a clue when they said to "stay away from both those", so, since you weren't being asked to lie you probably should have if you wanted the job. You basically showed, by your answer, that you couldn't "stay away". Now, if they would have said, "profess belief", you may have had to stand your ground, but you weren't asked that, or to lie, just to "stay away", which probably makes sense when dealing with the elderly who may not only be set in their ways but physically/mentally/emotionally frail.
Reasons for attending church or mass
phxbillcee comments on Feb 9, 2018:
Now, I may be wrong, & the numbers may go the other way, but I think for many church attendance is more tradition, habit & a social event, not necessarily a whole-hearted involvement. Too many people know that too much of their holy-books is just myth, so I think "true" belief is the exception rather than the rule. That being said, even the "closet doubters" may vote along religious lines for many reasons, protective coloration being one of them.
Sherlock Homes fan?
phxbillcee comments on Feb 9, 2018:
All of them, for various reasons. I enjoy all the different takes on the character & find them all valid in their own ways. Basil Rathbone was the classic, Downey Jr. did a credible job. Cumberbatch was just excellent! Many Dr. Who were in the same vein. Try, on TV, or on NetFlix, "The Blacklist" w/ James Spader. & of course, there's also "Bladerunner"! or "Criminal Minds", "Mindhunter" or "The Usual Suspects" - a great film. Or classics such as "The Maltese Falcon", "The Thin Man", "Double Indemnity", "Rear Window", "North by Northwest", "The Postman Always Rings Twice" (1946 version), many, many out there!

phxbillcee comments on Feb 9, 2018:
That is one of the words that have a large emotional/social/political charge on them. In one sense there is only the "human race", as we are all the same species no matter the minor variations, & there are so many gradations between the races that it all just blends into one. On the other hand, there are some definite minor differences between groups of people that show up genetically & otherwise (i.e.: sickle-cell, Tay-Sachs, etc.). I believe we are blending more than ever, tho, with wars invasions, droughts, famines, migrations, we have always done so, tho it will be some time before we are one homogenized people, if ever. I don't believe anyone is "pure" one race or the other, & on top of all that we all have common ancestors, which sort of makes the separation of people somewhat ludicrous. This subject, like many "real" subjects, is a complicated one & has answers on many levels.
I find myself questioning the critical thinking skills of anyone I meet who I find to be religious.
phxbillcee comments on Feb 8, 2018:
Yes, but we have to remember that many very intelligent folks were indoctrinated very early & have a large cultural/social/familial investment in their religion. Religious beliefs seem to be very easily compartmentalized, so that type of thinking doesn't necessarily bleed over into anything else. This is one major reason why we still have so many otherwise intelligent rational people that still "believe".

A bit of a thought experiment.
phxbillcee comments on Feb 8, 2018:
I'm not an astrophysicist, but,... I don't know if the original "distance" makes any difference. It would be pushed even further away but the expansion of "our" universe. & then one has to wonder, are the "laws" of physics, & our physical "constants", such as the values for the strong & weak atomic forces, gravity, etc. the same & what would happen if they interacted? Also, our universe ended up with what we consider "matter" as dominant vs "anti-matter". What if the other universe went the other way? It seems it would be just as likely. Just a few extra ideas thrown in there to keep things lively!

Why was Britain's universal health care blasted by US minority-elected president?
phxbillcee comments on Feb 6, 2018:
Reuter's article didn't come up for me (error mssg), but I don't know if I need specifics. Drumpf in mis/un-informed about most everything. Universal healthcare is something that should have been part of our country for ages, now. When I worked in a law office I saw too many, mostly elderly, clients that were forced into bankruptcy due to medical debts. They were devastated & usually deeply shamed, from something they had no control over. It is a disgrace that in the USA hardworking citizens can be pushed to the brink of losing their homes & their savings over medical costs. Trump promised "great health coverage" for all, gee, what a surprise, he lied, & instead of improving did his best with his cronies in Congress to dismantle the ACA. Now, with this "tax cut" we will see federal debt go up & it will give conservatives the opening they've been salivating for to dismantle all entitlements! They've been trying to destroy Social Security since its inception. Get ready for the reinstatement of debtors prisons!

Spiritual Athiest/Atheist dating question
phxbillcee comments on Jan 31, 2018:
Yoga is not "spiritualist" in the sense that you go for the metaphysical (unless you do!). I, who consider myself an atheist, tend to side with Matt Dillahunty on "spiritual". It's so broad & ephemeral (pun only slightly intended) that it's next to impossible to truly define. Many atheists tend to be a bit more "natural/material", & the whole idea of spooky stuff & woo tend to be offputting. Nevertheless, your guy should give you more credit & you should both maybe explore what you both mean by the term & see if you're really that far apart.
