This word was coined by paleontologist Marsh against his competitor and antagonist, paleontologist Copes. Basically Marsh was calling his arch enemy a dinosaur turd. Edward Drinker Cope Edward Drinker Cope (July 28, 1840 – April 12, 1897) was an American paleontologist and comparative anatomist, as well as a noted herpetologist and ichthyologist. He was a founder of the Neo-Lamarckism school of thought. ... Cope had little formal scientific training, and he eschewed a teaching position for field work. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Drinker_Cope Othniel Charles Marsh (October 29, 1831 – March 18, 1899) was an American paleontologist. He was one of the preeminent scientists in the field; the discovery or description of dozens of new species and theories on the origins of birds are among his legacies. Born into a modest family, Marsh was able to afford higher education thanks to the generosity of his wealthy uncle George Peabody. After graduating from Yale College in 1860 he traveled the world, studying anatomy, mineralogy and geology. He obtained a teaching position at Yale upon his return. From the 1870s to 1890s he competed with rival paleontologist Edward Drinker Cope in a period of frenzied Western American expeditions known as the Bone Wars. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Othniel_Charles_Marsh

Why do some men think women should be attracted because they are?
t1nick comments on Dec 15, 2019:
Most men are legends in their own minds. Due to traditional roles that men have been inculcated into, mens egos are unnecessarily vulnerable. The fear of rejections often causes men to overi-inflate their assets, to the point that they eventually actually believe their own press. It's not right, but given the old pervasive culture, it happens all too often.

Gender does not determine who is or is not a good parent. How many children have been irreparably damaged by parents who remained together because they feared social stigma or feared leaving g their undeserving spouse. Two men, two women, or a communal situation (as long as it's not a cult and all parties are well known and vetted), can be very good parents. As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child.

Albert Einstein quoted Science without Religion is lame, Religion without Science is blind.
t1nick comments on Dec 9, 2019:
Einstein is a product of his time. Nowadays we see a significant rise in secularism. This means that it is more acceptable to question or challenge religion. Not so the case for Einstein. He grew up at a time when it was mot acceptable to profess secular beliefs, especially if you were an important personage of the stature of Einstein. This does not say that Einstein didn't believe in God or Christian doctrine and believe himself to be spiritual. This poses a problem concerning my usual argument. Religion and Science are mutually exclusive paradigms IMO. One depends on faith and accepting supposed doctrinal truths at face value. Proof in the form of miracles are not subject to repetition, one of the fundamental tenets of science. Science is based upon replicable proof. Evidence must be consistent and replicable before it can be accepted as evidence. All knowledge in science is based on prior knowledge and used a regular and prescribed method for moving that knowledge forward. Religion does not. Heres the rub. The two paradigms are mutually exclusive from one another, and that any attempt to meld the two does disservice to both. It's like serving two Masters. One can never do credit to either one. To do justice to one means compromising the other, and visa versa. To compensate for the slighting of one, extra compensation must occur to set the balance right, and the seesaw goes on. I suspect (speculation) that Einstein was only a Christian by convention. He leant credence when convention demanded, but held little deep conviction when push came to shove. He realized the unfathomable perspectives his theories opened up and dealt with this perspective in the most acceptable manner given his times.

t1nick comments on Dec 8, 2019:
It's hard to believe that with all the hunters, hikers, and back country campers in Oregon and Washington, that if " bigfoot" existed, some physical evidence would have be uncovered by now. It is almost inconceivable that a mammal as large as the purported bigfoot supposedly is, would leave evidence of habitation or existence. Bones, tools, campsites, heritage, something. Couple this with the need to maintain a large enough population for maintaining a viable breeding population to sustain the species. Verifiable sightings should be more prevalent than the specious sightings that presently exists.

What are your objections to the fine tuning argument for the existence of god
t1nick comments on Dec 7, 2019:
The first line of your premise is both flawed and incomplete. It is neither chance or design. If you mean by Physical Necessity that it is following the physical Laws of physics as we understand them, then okay. Chance does come into play in some circumstances, but once the event occurs, it followers the prescribed Laws as understood by Physics. The encounter may seem completely random, but in actuality the same laws that rule their reaction after the event, allowed them to be in the location to begin with. Therefore, your final line and conclusion is specious. Just because it outwardly appears random it isnt completely. The physical laws of physics are called Natural Laws be cause they are part of a larger system in which events and their results are predicated on logical, physical traits. Not by any outside design.

t1nick comments on Dec 5, 2019:
Two separate and opposing paradigms. Mutually exclusive. To try to meld the two does justice to neither. To serve two masters [opposing paradigms] means that you are only doing half service to both and not adequately serving neither. The push-pull means, that at any given time, one paradigm is being slighted in order to satisfy the other. One ends up doing both poorly and never excels at neither.

No offense, but you do not understand science or the scientific process. In real science there is no such thing as j"ust a theory". You mean it's just an hypothesis. Words matter. An hypothesis doesn't become a theory until it has been replicated consistently many times over. A theory is backed by thousands, if not million s of data points which support the same conclusion. 90 % of what people call a theory in popular culture is really a hypothesis. A theory is as close to a scientific fact as you can get. It's by improvements in technology allowing for greater precision and accuracy does a theory get upended. Many get modified to account for better data, but few get upended.

They may be courteous and let you complete your thought ( that is if your lucky and not hit with immediate defensiveness). But none of what you say will be heard or considered. Your words will go in one ear and out the other. However, if you are asked your opinion then your chances of being actually heard is improved. They will listen you, may even seriously consider your remarks. May even follow them. Regardless, even if they do not follow, at least they considered( if only for a monent).

From these surficially unrelated observations an explanation for how life operates evolved (pun intended). Nineternth Century preconceptions and biases made their conclusions even more heroic. Darwin never totally abandoned religion and a belief in a God (a product of his age) . But the fact that we are debating their ideas 190 years later suggests the significance of thier contributions. No other area of science is so hotly debated by the lay public. Despite the fact that their conclusions have been thoroughly proven over and over again.

What I have gathered to date (11-24-19) regarding Trump's Ukraine escapades: 1.
t1nick comments on Nov 25, 2019:
Another fact that occurs to me. Part of the Trump Conspiracy entails the DNC servers. During 2016 Presidential campaign. Russia broke into the DNC computer servers. They got copirs of Hillary's campaign adviser's email, as well as some of Hillary's emails. The Russians fed these to the Trump campaign. There is proof that the Russians also hacked into the RNC servers as well. But as well as anybody can tell this information was never offered or given over Hillary's campaign. Now Trump is obsessed with getting Hillary's lost emails, which if I read it correctly is thought to be on the DNC servers. Trump claims that the Ukraine recieved the missing servers through a private company called CrowdStrike. Owned by a wealthy Ukranian oligarch. Here's the catch. The DNC servers aren't missing. There's not one, but over a hundred servers used by the campaign. After the campaign was over, the FBI came into the DNC and downloaded the contents of the servers onto external drives. They are stored at the FBI. The FBI did this to the RNC servers as well. The whole server claim is a bold faced lie.

That is the way I undetstand it. I watched about 1/4 of the testimonies as they occurred when I working. You left a couple of key items that play into the Republican counter-story and conspiracy. 1) While Joe Biden was acting Vice-President, his son took a position on the board of a Ukranian gas company. Burisma. 2) Joe was warned that the optics of his son at Burisma appeared to be a potential case of "conflict of intetest". Nothing more. 2) Hunter Biden left Burisma prior to the investigation and removal of the corrupt Ukranian attorney general, Shokan. 3) Suspicians arose that Shokan and Burisma were both corrupt and funneling money illegally into their own accounts and frauding the EU. This incurred the wrath of the EU, our Adminstration, the World Bank, and many others. 4) Joe Biden appealed, along with the EU, and the World Bank, to the Ukranian government for Alexader Shoken to be dismissed as Attorney General. Hunter Biden was nowhere on the scene by this time. 5) An investigation into Shiken and Birsma was initiated. NO EVIDENCE was found to implicate Hunter Biden with the Burisma-Shokan corruption. 6) Sometime around this time (I'm not clear on exact dates) Manafort was discovered to have been part of the corruption that was happening. 7) Manafort's role was illuminated and he was ultimately sent to prison. 8) Manafort was a personal friend of Donald Trump. 9) Trump feels no love lost for Ukraine since it was their initial investigation and evidence that helped place Trump's friend, Manafort, in jail. 10) Biden' s popularity was surging in the polls for the Democrats running for office. Trump's number were slipping quickly. Rumor had it in the WH that internal polls showed Biden beating Trump by double digits in the 2020 election. Trump was livid. This was in April-May of 2019. Coincident with the timing of the infamous "perfect" phone call between Trump and Zalensky.

Take a look at the book, "She Comes First". An insightful look at how the female organ works and how to use that knowledge to assure your partner is always fulfilled.

There is a connection between spider solitaire and the argument of intelligent design.
t1nick comments on Nov 25, 2019:
Interesting post. Please use paragraph breaks next time for easier reading. I play spider solitaire occasionally. I've played it for about three years now. There is a point of diminishing return in which even the undo button will not allow you to proceed to a successful outcome. Now to your point. If I understand you correctly, because you have a perpetual undo option the process is therefore not random. Therefore, by not being random and always being able to autocorrect, one can always expect a positive outcome (success). Working with this knowledge, the player moves forward more confidently having the knowledge their success is assured. Using game theory this conclusion is consistent, logical and mostly assurred. Extending this to a metaphysical construct of a God-world in which their is a non- random design and a preordained underlying structure, a distinction arises. In spider solitaire, if a person moves slowly and deliberately, using the undo button liberally one moves with increasing confidence knowing the undo can change the outcome. In real life, even with the knowledge of a structure that there is a greater plan, the individual does not have an undo or a reset button. The only comparable analogy would be prayer. Working on the assumption that a omniscient God is listening and will address ones requests. By praying, the God figure will introduce an out that nullifies or redirects previous circumstances to a more positive outcome. Therefore, one always has an opportunity to win, thus infusing a false level of security to the individual. Conversely, if one accepts the concept of a heaven state, the undo button becomes the asking of forgiveness. As the Christian paradigm works, if one asks for forgiveness and accepts the proverbial host they are assured a successful outcome, "a place in heaven". In the big picture, this is a successful outcome. Thus prayer becomes the undo button. It does not help them in this world, but is still a successful outcome in the next. A challenging post this early in the morning. Lol

Should the USA try to keep Muslims out of their country?
t1nick comments on Nov 24, 2019:
That is contrary to the values that our country were built and based upon. Most make good citizens. Right now white nationalists are a bigger problem that Muslims. Most Muslim immigrants go through two years of vetting prior to being allowed come here, (despite what ignorant republicans claim). White nationalists can immigrate with practically no vetting at all. They get in simply because from a European country and are white.
Are Believers Better Citizens?
t1nick comments on Nov 24, 2019:
No, generally worse. They are believers because they are weak minded and in need of reinforcement, albeit false, to function day to day. Being weak minded, they must build rationalizations as to why they are better than others.

No, like you, if it doesn't impact me directly at any given time, I ignore. I do not like the influence it wields in Gov't these days. I find most Chritians act contrary to their doctrine.

Not to be critical, but your argument is nonsensical. Define your understanding of "Nonexistence: or your exact meaning as "coming from nothing". And it's the Law of Conservation if Mass, not energy. By the same token that you talk about the possibilities of reincarnation, if there were truly nothing, then even this would not be possible. You derive from the merging of two gamete cells. One from your mother and on from your father. This "is", something, not "nothing". This unfortunately renders your premise specious at best, ridiculous at worst.

"While atheism is merely the absence of belief" this statement gave me pause. It suggests on the surface that to be an atheist is not to believe in anyhing; philosophically or otherwise. I truly believe there is no God figure. That belief is real. I can back it up (should I choose, which I dont at this time) by pointing out how the Physical Laws of the Universe, as discovered through scientific experimentation, satisfactorily explain most phenomenon much better than any religion. Not only are they are consistent in most circumstances regardless of the actors (I use this term to include both living and nonliving paricipants) they are replicable (unlike miracles) But when they appear not to be consistent they still follow the Physical Laws when eventually understood.

My family was varying degrees of religious. My siblings more so than my parents. I grew up in the protestant church. Got my religious merit badges in Boy Scouts. But something never totally set right with the whole religious thing. Then at the end of my second semester of college my freshman year, I took an intro to Philosophy class. That was all it took. The opportunity to see other perspectives, unfettered ability to ask questions and seek knowledge made me see the falsity of the doctrines and religions in general. My love had always been with the sciences and history. I have been a scientist, educator, and atheist for 45 years. No turning back now. Lol

I’m a Buddhist. Do you regard Buddhism as a religion? Or philosophy?
t1nick comments on Nov 23, 2019:
Just like Chritianity. Buddhism has both a philosophical and a purely religious sides. Christianity has religious scholars and sects ( e.g. Jesuits). Buddhism has its scholarly practioners ( do not know what they call themselves). To look at the historical texts in an scholarly fashion in order to ascertain intended meanings, or review changes in doctrine in order to understand trends and the evolution of thought to understand the present as an academic pursuit exists in all religions. Religion is perhaps better described as the everyday practice as understood by the general practitioners. Phiilosophy on the other hand is a more academic, scholarly look at the foundations and histories of the religion. Regardless, they are all misguided and often taint their work by embracing and employing preconceived biases.

Did the Aztecs ever take the Spanish for the returning deity Quetzalcoatl?
t1nick comments on Nov 22, 2019:
This is how colonial Imperialism gets spread and perpetuated. Spanish were apart of the European conquest of the world. Like the other colonizing powers they weilded their culture and their religion as a weapon. This is just another form of white privilige, as Spanish Castilleans are as caucasian as the Brits or the Swedes ( the Moors only made it part way up the Iberian Peninsula). Colonizers often see themselves as paternal saviors saving the "savages" from themselves. They instill a sense of cultural inferiority in the colonized cultures, often via religion. Afterall, the Aztecs could not possibly have percieved Cortez as anything short of a God.
Women get so emotional.
