The Scientific Method and Quantum Physics
t1nick comments on Sep 29, 2019:
The scientific method does indeed call for replicability. When it comes to those fields of study where the body of knowledge and the attending phenomena are either too small, or to grand to observe directing, one takes the extant knowledge and forms an informed model. The model asks the question, if what we understand is true and the best explanation for the data and observations we have, all things being equal, we should expect to observe "this". Based upon mathematical and scientific principle and probability, we set up our experiment and run our model. If the data we derive falls within the acceptable range of probability and outliers and anomalies remain at a minimum, we begin to accept that our hypothesis and our model may be a plausible understanding for explaining the observed phenomenon. That's the beginning though. Here's where the replicability comes in. We run it again and again. We offer it to the scientific peers so they can run it and see if they acquire similar results. If replicability holds up, after a reasonable period of time, and the reasonable veracity of the replication and consistency, the information becomes part of the scientific body of knowledge. Science is dynamic by definition. This means that if technological developments allows scientists to take measurements that are more precise and accurate than previously possible, the understanding can be revised, or even rejected based upon the new evidence (eg. rejection of a flat earth, or the workings of plate tectonics). This dynamism conforms to the scientific method and process. John Dalton thought atoms were solid particles, we know know this is not true because of the veracity of experimentation and the demand for replicability.

Flip, flip, flip flop. At the beginning of Trumps candidacy, the Carolina bathroom bill controversy arose. When asked, about Trans people using bathrooms in the Trump Tower and other Trump properties, "the Donald" insisted he didn't care who used his bathrooms, and he had no trouble with Trans people using the bathroom of their gender choice. He got into office, and it wasn't long before he began his initiative to restrict and eliminate Trans in the US military. Since being in office, he has opening sought to restrict Trans in many areas of society. Anti-LGBTQ violence has increased, and anti-LGBTQ laws have passed all over the country. I'm glad he has decided to speak out against LGBTQ discrimination in other countries, but about in his own country. Trump is an opportunist. He must percieve an advantage in some form or he wouldn't have included this issue in his speech to the UN. Question is, what is his hidden agenda and the advantage he perceives. He could care less about the well-being of the LGBTQ community.
It's going to be an awkward day for me today.

Well written and researched article. He brings up many salient and cogent points. Many of which I have given voice to on this site. Especially with regards to our policy actions in South and Central America. I have also pointed out that we leveraged aide in an attempt to get international support for the Iraq-Afghanistan War. Regardless, those examples, while in themselves inexcusable or unsavory at best, is momentarily irrelevant. This is now, and we are faced with our own unsavory cast of characters. I am a rabid opponent to Trump and his cabal of disreputable scumbags. I'm not so blind as to assume Biden or his son are above reproach. But neither do I want to distract ourselves with these "what about" diversions on our way to remove this gangster from the Whitehouse.

homunculus ho·mun·cu·lus /həˈməNGkyələs,hōˈməNGkyələs/ noun a very small human ...
t1nick comments on Sep 25, 2019:
A homunculus (English: /hoʊˈmʌŋkjʊləs/; Latin: [hɔˈmʊnkʊlʊs]; Latin for "little person") is a representation of a small human being. Popularized in sixteenth-century alchemy and nineteenth-century fiction, it has historically referred to the creation of a miniature, fully formed human. The concept has roots in preformationism as well as earlier folklore and alchemic traditions. The homunculus first appears by name in alchemical writings attributed to Paracelsus (1493–1541). De natura rerum (1537) outlines his method for creating homunculi: That the sperm of a man be putrefied by itself in a sealed cucurbit for forty days with the highest degree of putrefaction in a horse's womb, or at least so long that it comes to life and moves itself, and stirs, which is easily observed. After this time, it will look somewhat like a man, but transparent, without a body. If, after this, it be fed wisely with the Arcanum of human blood, and be nourished for up to forty weeks, and be kept in the even heat of the horse's womb, a living human child grows therefrom, with all its members like another child, which is born of a woman, but much smaller. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homunculus

Trump and his minions have shown a complete disregard for the rule of law on numerous times in the past. So his argument may not hold water. Following the release tomorrow of the transcript, the actual whistleblower and his legal counsel are scheduled to appear before the intelligence committee later this week. I dont think his constitutes treason. He has several other actions with Russia and Putin that more closely approach treason. This is impeachable though. Its unethical, unprofessional, and petty, but then again everything Trump does is unethical, unprofessional, and petty. Trump's followers are like recalcitrant students. Like recalcitrant students they are willing to destroy themselves and everything that makes this country unique and respected just to make a point. Like a student which refuses to do the assignment because they are mad at the teacher. By not doing the assignment they believe they are punishing the teacher. They inadvertently make the teacher's life a modicum easier; one less assignment to grade -lol... in the process they harm themselves by not getting that grade. This what Trump supporters are doing. Destroying themselves in the long run to make a point.

Do you feel bad about eating meat and the slaughter of animals for meat?
t1nick comments on Sep 12, 2019:
On one hand this is a question steeped in ignorance and myth. Human digestive systems evolved early in our evolution to be omnivorous, which incldes eating meat. When humans learned to use fire, the process broke down the meat fiber so as to be digestible by humans. The human species evolution was accelerated by this discovery and evolution. Now for the other side. When humans were not so populace, hunting provided food (not trophies), kept game populations down so that weak gene's were kept to a minimum in the gene pool. BUT, today, in order to feed a our overpopulated species the cost to the environment is unjustifiable. The resources needed to raise cattle for the human species is destroying the planet. Clear cutting in the Amazon, erosion of overgrazed land, and carbon releasing are just a few of the problems incurred by livestock husbandry. The cost of bringing a lb of beef to market is more than the benefit of the protein benefit we derived from it. Not to speak of the inhumane cruelty of the livestock industry, stockyards, and livestock processing industries (all livestock animals). I eat meat, I enjoy eating meat, and I am not ignorant of the nature of the industry. I grew up in the west in cow country and have seen the industry firsthand. But, my worry and concern is the relationship between needed resources vs. available resources to an ever burgeoning human population.

t1nick comments on Sep 12, 2019:
This one of the more interesting conversations I've seen on this site in quite awhile. The problem with heros are that the things that make them heros is that they are not afraid to make decisive moves. "Decisive", not necessarily moral., ethical, or just, just decisive at the critical time. One characteristic of heros is their ruthlessness in the face of adversity. There ruthlessness against adversaries, real or imagined, against external threats or internal, foreign or economic. When they succeed, humans have short memories and prefer happy endings. When they fail, they are vilified and their failure is held against them. But dispite their failure they were acting the same as those that succeeded. The thing that makes heros heros is the ability and willingness to do what needs to be done at the time that it needs doing, regardless of the outcome or impact of their actions. All heros are fallable, blind to opposing opinions, and capable of the greatest of action, and the worst of crimes.
