toot sweet - quickly, immediately, at once.
t1nick comments on Jul 19, 2019:
Toute de siite: The song title is a play on words, a humorous Anglicisation of the French expression "tout de suite", meaning "at once" or "right away". During World War I British soldiers serving in France, most of whom could not speak French, adopted the phrase as "toot sweet" to mean "hurry up" or "look smart".[1][2] In the context of the film and stage musical, "Toot Sweets" is about a piece of confectionery ("sweet" being the British term for confectionery) invented by the main character, Caractacus Potts, that has holes in it, making the sweet playable as an edible whistle. Unfortunately for Potts, the toot sweets act like dog whistles, calling all the local canines into the sweet factory, ruining the sanitary conditions of the factory and turning love interest Truly's father against him. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toot_Sweets Toot sweet candies:

You've done a good job outlining the limitations of Libertarianism. Many in the Liberatarian camp reference Ayn Rand and the Objectivism movement as their guide posts. Most do not understand human nature, or Ayn Rand for that matter. Ayn Rand was writiing out of her experiences in Soviet Russia. As such she wrote in a polar extreme to the failing Communist system she fled. I did an independent study on her and her philosophies in college many years ago. The problem lies in the fact most proponents of Objectivism and Libertarianism today are writing or espousing without to benefit of the same experiential base or context. They are grabbing onto a surficial undetstanding of what Rand meant by selfishness. Todays Libertarianism is primarily a clarion call for superselfishness. It is principally a way to achieve two objectives: 1) Preserve white male (primarily) privilige. The idea that basically says that nobody can tell me who I have to accept, what I can do, or that I need to be accountable to anybody besides myself (they just don't want to called into account for their actions or be responsible for contributing to the larger community): 2) They are generally immature and recoil when they are told they have to contribute to society or provide assistance to anybody besides themselves. They are the type that were continually in trouble in school because they were convinced that nobody could tell them what to do. Libertarianism is indeed a selfish minor philosophy, but not in the way that is consistent with Ayn Rand's experiences or intent. The above discriptions are indeed generalizations, but are anecdotally consistent with my observations and experiences.

So....? A barber in the 19th Century was not only a bsrber, but a dentist, a doctor, and in Friedrich's case, a brothel owner. He wasn't so innocent. Frederick Trump (born Friedrich Trump; 14 March 1869 – 30 May 1918) was a German–American businessman and the patriarch of the Trump family. Born in Kallstadt, in the Kingdom of Bavaria (now in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany), he emigrated to the United States at the age of 16 and started working as a barber. Several years later, in 1891, he moved to the Northwest. He allegedly made his fortune by operating restaurants and brothels in Seattle and the mining town Monte Cristo, and brothels in the Klondike Gold Rush.[1][2] He later returned to Kallstadt and married. Bavarian authorities accused him of emigrating when he was young to avoid fulfilling his military service, so he lost his Bavarian citizenship; he and his family returned to the United States. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_Trump

Are you racist?
t1nick comments on Jul 16, 2019:
Biologically and evolutionarily, the concept of race does not exist in humans. Biologically, race implies a geographically isolated population that has evolved independent of its parent population and would under normal conditions not interbreed with the parent population. Not a new species, a subspecies perhaps. Humans by their mobility has precluded the ability of any human population on this planet to be or remain geographically isolated. Interbreeding, either willingly or forced has occurred between all human populations. Every human carries a little DNA from every group somewhere in their code. There is no such thing as a pure group. Skin color does not define race. It defines melatonin production as a result of geographic proximity to, or away from the equator or poles. It is a consequence of adaptation and sexual selection. In humans, "race" remains a cultural construct, not a biological determinant. For me personally, I am predominantly of northern and western European heritage. But for over 20 years of my teaching career I have lived on various Native reservations or taught in all Native schools. In all these instances I was by and large the minority. I have felt reverse discrimination, but never was deterred by it realizing that as they got to know me better it would disappear. And thats what happened Now everybody has some area where discrimenation creeps in. Humans are about hierarchy, even if they consciously fight against it. To claim no racism whoatsoever is to dimenish the significance of what racism is according to scholars who study racism. Its to deny the insidiousness of racist behavior.
This article shows exactly what has happened in America since January 2017.
t1nick comments on Jul 16, 2019:
You make an astute observation. However how can we stand by and do nothing. That is as counterproductive as challenging it and losing. But, we must stand up to boorish and racist behavior no matter up. IMO we may be at a racial tipping point. The racial genie is out of the bottle and cannot be put back in. If Trump and the Republicans want to fuel the fire, ultimately they will get burned.
Trump Is a Racist. If You Still Support Him, So Are You.
t1nick comments on Jul 16, 2019:
If you disagree with Trump and think his words are racist, but remain quiet, you are complicit. By staying quiet you give implicit permission to the perpetrator, making you just as guilty as the perpetrator. Just ask the vicitms of Naxi Germany 1933 to 1945 That population was silent too as the Nazi's rose to power and began their atrocities. The populace remained silent, turned a blind eye, then attemted to rationalize it all away, and we observe what happened next.

If you are not actively opposing Donald Trump now, you are part of the problem.
t1nick comments on Jul 15, 2019:
In summary: On Saturday, Trump tweeted a post that has been deemed by the majority as racist. In order to capitalize on the recent division in the Democratic Party between Nancy Pelosi and the freshman squad, Trump made a racist declaration against the freshman squad. His intent was to continue to convince his supporters that the ENTIRE Democratic Party has moved incontrovertibly to the far left and are socialists, even were communists. He demanded that the four freshmen female Congresswomen of color go back to the country they came from. That their countries were the equivalent to "shithole" countries (he didn't actually say that word this time but the description of their "counties" were close enough. First, three of the Congresswomen were born in the United States, and are therefore US citizens. The fourth, Ihan Omar was born in Somalia, immigrated to the US at age 12 and became naturalized. She is a US citizen, she went through the proper steps, took and passed the Naturalization exam, and was elected by other US citizens. He claimed that they hated the United States and should leave. Conflating criticism of policy with the hatred for their country is just ignorant. Conflating criticism of Isreali policy with anti-semitism is just ignorant. The worst part is the use of the racist trope, "go back to where you came from". That trope has been around since before the Chinese Exclusion Act of the 1880's. It was a common trope during Jim Crow for blacks. It was used against Italian and Irish immigrants at the fin de sigle. It's been the clarion call of those who want to exclude immigres from Central America. It was a blatant racial slight, beyond debate. Its a clear overt dog whistle to white supremacy. He tripled down today from the Rose Garden. No apologies, no clarifications. He is an overt racist, no longer debatable.

He failed on the later, and mostly succeeded on the former.

ATTENTION - A SURVEY ABOUT AMERICAN WOMEN! Most US women won't dine alone with opposite sex, ...
t1nick comments on Jul 12, 2019:
The two situations which you are attempting to conflate are not necessarily compatible. A dining situation can have implications and pitfalls that are different from thise associated with being a jounalist and doing a job. Questions of who pays, believe it or not that is a high anxiety question for many women. If you let the guy pay, many immature guys attach expectations to that action. They believe if they pay, they expect something in return. You offer and srmand to pay, and the same other petson is insulted. It many cases it is a no win situation for the women. In the situation where a woman journalist is doing a job the lines of expectations and behaviors are more clearly laid out. Not that individuals might not overstep those boundaries, but is less likely. Given the raising of perceptions over the last couple of decades, the situations outlined above have decreased. But there are still a large number of socially immature men out there.

Elementary Education Has Gone Terribly Wrong in the US.
t1nick comments on Jul 12, 2019:
Knowlege is nothing without the tools to apply them. What you call technique is really skills. Intellectual content is nothing without the ability to properly evaluate what you see, hear, or read. Thats why we have Trump followers today. Somewhere along the line they failed to acquire the tools necessary to evaluate the information they were taking in. Whats missing in elementary school (and it continues throughout all of secondary education) is intellectual disciple. Complex rational thinking is not an innate skill that one is born with (notice I said complex). It is learned and develped by practice. Schools are no longer making their students be accountable for being intellectually disciplined. We accept sloppy work that fails to meet the mininmum skills standards. We allow inferior thought processes, inferior demonstrations of skill development, and inferior products to be handed in. However, before you say, "well its the educational systems fault, the schools fault, the teachets fault.", realize teachers and schools are just responding to the level of support they recieve from parents. Teachers and schools would love to ibcrease the intellectual demand and rigor of the work. But over the last 30 years parents have abandoned education. Now teachers are reprimanded for making the wook "too hard". When Adminstrators bring this charge against a teacher its usually because of parental pressure. They want little Johnny to get good grades, but Johnny refuses to do the work that is sent home. Instead he goes in his room plays video games. The parents are inept at getting him to cooperate and do his homework, so they give up. Its easier to complain to the Principal or School Board that the teacher expects too much from their kids. Complex thought processes snd problem solving is far more important in the long run than content. If I have the skills developed for critical thinking, I can take in sny snd all content and be fairly sure that I can effectively evaluate, understand and appropritely question the material. "Give me a fish today and I eat today, but teach me to fish and I provide for all days going forward" Give me a fact today and I can repeat it back without understanding its significance, but teach me to think and I can solve the problems that I face going forward.

t1nick comments on Jul 10, 2019:
I concur with him regarding that science and knowledge have limits. I do not agree with his defintion of the limits or the relationship to sprituality. First off, IMO the limits surrounding science has little to with the ability to advance scientific discovery, invention relating to that discovery (technology) or developing means for advancing either. IMO the limitations comes in the ability to measure the impact or consequences acquired from the new knowledge of our inventions. Yes, we can do it, but should we do it? Humans, with the exception of the astronauts, are limited in their world view and frame of references. Being confined to this planet, the totality of our experiences from which understanding can be drawn is limited. Our paradigm of existence is therefore limited. Consequently we make decisions based on that paradigm and as history has demonstrated, we make the same errors in judgement repeatedly. Humans are a relatively young species. We have not been around long enough to have been able to expand our philosophical horizons much beyond our early sapian beginnings. Yes we have substantially more content and knowledge, but like our early sapian bretheren, we are still limited by our world and its experiential limitations. The exception may be the astronauts. We lack the emotional maturity that allows us as a species to comprehend and temper our intellectual capability. It has nothing to do with spirituality unless you want call our naivete spritual.
