Yes, there is a war between science and religion
t1nick comments on Dec 22, 2018:
I concur with the author of the article. There is faith in Science. But is a faith based in understanding the scientific method, that the method is bring carried out correctly and reported correctly. That is why we have peer review. An example of what I mean by faith. I have taught high school science for 30 years. I cannot realitically split an atom in my classroom. But believing the empirical data available, in the integrity of the researchers and the efficacy of the peer review process, I believe that what we undetstand about the atom is true. I take it on a form of faith that the atom exists and acts as we understand it since I cannot replicate the experiments in my classroom. Keeping in mind that one of the tenets of the scientific process is that Science is dynamic and changable. As the sophistication and precision of the technology we use to investigate gets better, and allows us to collect data that dugges34ys otherwise.

Its the second time in the year when the Earth is tilted so that Earth is the has the least horizontality with regards to the sun. At this time and on June 21st, the sun's light reaches the its most southerly point, and least amount of light strikes the northern hemisphere. This is the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemispere and the longest day of the year in the Southern Hemisphere. The days get longer as the tilt of the Earth leans back toward the sun (summer) in the Northern Hemisphere and away from the sun (winter) in the Southern Hemisphere. The pattern is reversed for our winter, there summer. The solstices in March and Septembrr are the two positions when the tilt of the Earth allows the sun to shine equally above and below the equator.

t1nick comments on Dec 20, 2018:
Our understanding of human psychology and behavior is very different today than in Adams Smiths's time. The idea of what constitutes "rationality" and a "rational human" js partially contextually defined. What was considered rational in Smith's time was conditionally defined on the social morays of the time (eg. women were not considered a rational being, and blacks and indians were only half human). Therefore. not surprising that Smith presumed that humans were rational beings who acted for own self interest in the market place. It was a white male dominated society that viewed the world from this lens of shared. but specious understanding.

I have never heard the terms red pilled or blue pilled prior to this post and I am not cloistered and out of touch. I have a feeling that the usage is not as common or as wide spread as you allude to. It may be that you got caught up in a situation where you found the group that are familiar with the terminology which lead to others of that ilk weighing in. Or perhaps I am just more out of touch that I realize.

An average Joe crow was sitting in a tree saying hello to me today.
t1nick comments on Dec 17, 2018:
Crows are often mistaken for their larger cousin, the raven. You can tell them apart by their beak shape and their size difference. Ravens and crows are held in great respect by many Native cultures. A coyote story that kind of relates. My first job in archaeology was during the time that the Carlos Castenada craze was just taking hold. I was working in the Sonoran desert in central AZ on the Gila River. We were living in tents for nine months. We doing what was known as pedestrian survey. In otherwords, walking the proposed inundation area looking for signs of prehistoric human activity. Midway through our project I ran into a coyote one day. After eyeing each other from a comfortable distance and after a little while, we each went our way. Many days for the rest of project I would see a coyote following or watching my movements. I always thought it was the same coyote. After awhile he jokingly became my familiar.
I spent from May to November getting paid to live in a tent in Mendocino county.
t1nick comments on Dec 17, 2018:
My first job in archaeology was nine months in a tent i central Arizona on the middle Gila River. And then again in northern Wyoming. Many years backpacking, tent camping and field work involving tents.

Melania Trump's spokeswoman speaks out - CNN
t1nick comments on Dec 16, 2018:
Subtlety matters. To appear at an event for a photo op is not the same thing as really showing up as an advocate or as an interested party. Michelle Obama probably appeared at many events because it was good exposure for her husband's Administration. However when Michelle showed up she made it clear that even small things like a coat or a blouse was significant. She knew how appearances were important. Little things are important, when groups of people are looking for leadership, they look at every aspect to provide positive affirmation. Talking to people in a disaster wearing a coat that screams that I dont really care and I'm just here to get photo opps, doesnt sit well. Michelle always looked like she belonged, that she cared, and was on the peoples side.

t1nick comments on Dec 13, 2018:
Some interesting points, but ignores the importance of historical context. Black lives matter arose out a need to address a long standing history of institutional racism that has been around since before Reconstruction Era, and is still pervasive today. To jnject this other movement, which is not needed, is to dilute and diminish the significance of the original movement. The pervayers of the All Lives Matter. are generally a group that does not need protecting due the atmosphere of white privilege that permeates and dominates society today. It is easy to see why the critics of All Lives Matter, have a case to make.

t1nick comments on Dec 11, 2018:
Hi Orbit. I have been an atheist since 1973. It was first year in college, 2nd semester. I was in an introduction to philosophy class. My professor was funny, as well as being generally opposed to all religions. By the time the semester was over, I pretty well knew that I was a nonbeliever. I had been generally more religious than most of my family through late elementary and middle school. I received all the Boy Scout awards having to do with religion. But in the back of my mind, there was always things that didn't add up about Christianity. The God thing just wasnt working and my questions received unsatifactory answers. That was until that philosophy class.

Why do Christians celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December when Jesus wasn't born on that day?
t1nick comments on Dec 9, 2018:
It was coopted by Chritians to inculcate pagans and make it easier for them to accept the new religion. Its a common strategy. In Bahia Brazil. the saints and saintly celebrations were equated with the local dieties. It served two purposes. 1) indigenous peoples could still practice their own religion but look like they ate converting. and 2) it made it easier to accept the new religion when in reality they had no choice. This happens all around the world wherever colonialism happens.

Attention Fox News Viewers, Tucker Carlson Is Turning On You!
t1nick comments on Dec 9, 2018:
Tucker says that Trump is incapable of handling the job of president. That is contrary to the typical FOX propaganda byline. However, Tucker goes on to say Trump's role is to ask the important questions and begin the dialogue. That is also contrary to what we know about Trumo and his followers. They do not engage in meaningful dialogue. They refer back to anecdotal evidence (non-evidence, aka: fiction, made up hyperbolic hyper-irrationality) to support their position. They compensate for the inability to actually succeed in maintaining a logical argument by speaking faster, speaking louder, talking over and interrupting continually, and obfuscating or quickly pivoting to a nonsequiter. So while Tucker made some headway in returning from the darkside, it was only temporary and he'll be back to perpetuating his propaganda tomorrow.

As an adult how can you develop a sense of belonging?
t1nick comments on Nov 29, 2018:
I've spent the greater part of my adult life teaching in communities not of my own background or culture. When I taught on the Hopi Reservation in NE Arizona, I was 90 miles from the nearest city. I was the minority. As such. I was well aware that my employment depended upon learning and respecting the culture I found myself. There were others like myself, fish out of water. I found identity in learning as much as could about the culture I operated within. In response the hopi recognized my respect for them and opened their doors to me, greatly enriching my life. And this is but one station and but one of the cultures in which I've taught. Always the same results.

Today's America is like the plot of an old western movie.
t1nick comments on Nov 25, 2018:
David, I'm having trouble with this post. Not that its a bad post. Its just that I have trouble with the John Wayne solution. I grew up in the west with JW movies and enjoyed them. I've ranched and rodeod, but as an educated liberal, I realized that JW represented a paradigm that is not healthy. JW is a product of his time. Unfortunately, the paradigm of the time was both ethnocentric (especially white male ethnocentrism) and terribly misogynistic. The idea that the western man represented the idea of the ideal rugged individual is inconsistent with historical truth. Most individuals moving west were not the cream of society's best. They were the disenfranchised, trouble makers, individuals that were ill prepared to make their way in society, and people looking to make a quick buck. There was no code of the west. That was invented by Hollywood and authors like Louis Lamour. Not to denegrate the grit many needed to have to survive the difficulties inherent, but that doesnt mean they were moral or ethical. Just tenacious. We dont need a Hollywood myth to save us. We need a collective of conscientious individuals to step up and say no to the unethical behavior found in Wahington and the nation today.
