Steve Bannon warns that women are going to 'take charge of society'

Why is teachers pay one of the most undervalued degrees one can receive ?
t1nick comments on Nov 4, 2018:
Historically, teachers were not always required to be trained in teaching pedagogy and methodology. Therefore, often a community that was having difficulty filling a teaching spot (usually due to the criminally low salaries being offered), a school system, panicked at starting the school year short staff. In response they would higher individuals that had some tangentially related experience with the content subject, but not trained in teaching methodologies. Abuses occurred. This changed with Bush's "No child left behind" initiative. Ignoring for the moment the fallacy in the reliance upon standardized testing, what NCLB did do was to force schools to better vet their applicants, and mandated that all schools need hire qualified, certified teaching professionals. No longer would plugging a warm body at the front of the body be allowed. Secondly, NCLB also mandated that teachers, beyond just being certified, must continue to acquire more education. Re-certification required teachers to work towards an advanced degree or certified advanced training at the very least. Teachers have become professionals. Now to address the original question as posed. While the profession has addressed its shortcomings, myths still abound in society. Many parents still view educators as as non-professionals despite the error in this reasoning. Also, special intetests (especially fundamental Christians) object to the fact that their biases arent allowed in the curriculum (e.g. Scientific Creationism - doesn't exist). As such they resent having to pay for something they don't agree with. A growing population in our country that is growing older and nearing retirement age. They still hold on to the old myth of teachers that existed when they were in school. Plus. being retired, they don't want to pay for somebody else's children. They supported education when they had their own children still in school. But do not feel it is their responsibility anymore. Short answer long. Its the continued perpetration of a teacher myth that devalues the field of teaching. People don't want to pay for something they do not agree with or respect. Even if their asdumptions are based on fallacies.
[investors.com] The UN admits that the Paris Climate deal was a fraud
t1nick comments on Nov 4, 2018:
First lets be clear, the report does not say the climate change controversy is a fraud. In fact is asserts that the danger is even more dire than we or the Paris signers feared. His claim that the benchmarks are insufficient to meet the needs to halt the temperature rise. I'm going to speculate here (I might be wrong, but I'm a cynic). Your posting and the way that you introduced it, its possible that you are saying "See. Its all a hoax. Global warming is a fraud." While the message of the Paris Accord was overly optimistic, its benefit is in a near universal acknowledgement that a problem exists. That leaves a couple of ways we can look at it. One, we can say the world was deceived by the Paris agreement, so nothing should be done to stop the inevitable. Or. two. we can say that our estimates were overoptimistic, but lets continue to work toward a solution. Knowing how fast scientific and technological advances occur, by continuing to focus on the problem, it's possible that we might find a solution before the worst case scenario occurs.
Immortality?

Thoughts on marriage : There seems to be many in the community who are anti marriage.
t1nick comments on Oct 22, 2018:
I was married once. It didn't work out. We gave it ten years. I would do it all over agsin. My ex and I are best friends and look out for one another from afar. My new gf is talking marriage. Im excited about the prospect. Marriage is best after you've known each other for awhile. I recommend living with one another for awhile. Being together 24/7/365 tells you all the things you generally need to know. The actual act of getting married can change a person. The making official of the vows sometimes can bring out hidden expectations that weren't there when dating. Just be aware. I know multiple people that have been living together for 10, 15. 20 years together and have never gotten married. In general they seem happier than married couples Ive known. But they even end up getting married. Even after all those years together. Best advice, dont be in a hurry, and know your mate inside and out before jumping. Good luck.

t1nick comments on Oct 20, 2018:
The problem is that presently a sizable segment is using anectodal evidence (it may be loosely called that) to make arguments that impact policy and society. I agree with you that most people do not like a lot of facts. It does tend to make them feel inadequate and potentially stupid. But here lies the problem. There are substantial problems that exist out there. It is necesary that those problems and issues get addressed, as they have far reaching implications for society and the planet. How do we to address them. We can rely on anecdotes, which are more often than not wrong, or we can rely upon empirical evidence. The problem is how do we get the empirical evidence out to the lay person without overwhelming them with information or making them feel as stupid as they really are. It really comes down to a matter of marketing. Scientists hate the Madison Ave, marketing types (myself included). But scientists are lousy at marketing their information in a way that the lay person can intake and not freeze up mentally. A good example of that is the debate over global warming. Chances are that 90% of the scientific community is not wrong. The evidence is overwhelming. But the way that its been presented over the years (emphasize years), it has become a political football, as opposed being something that average citizen felt compelled to act upon and cooperate to find solutions. What needed is a version of the Madison Ave advertising complex geared to finding a way to make the scientific information palatable for the lay and uninitiated individual.
i love this book!

t1nick comments on Oct 14, 2018:
My brother is a geophysicist and a hardcore Baptist. He sees no contradiction in this. That can only happen by compartmentization. When he's at work, hes a scientist (Technologist really), when he comes home hes an uber Christian. How can he do this. I contend that he can't. He is beholden to two Gods (metaphorically speaking). In order to his job or live his life, he has to compromise his ideals continually. Instead of doing one thing well, he does both poorly (he is a successful grophysicist- thus a technogist). His science paradigm is compromised when a controversial issue arises. He compromises his religious ideology anytime he does his science. The two patadigms are mutually exclusive and opposed. Doesnt mean you can't be successful, just means your judgement is always suspect.

Hi - question about formulation of etiquette with respect to new technologies and practices.
t1nick comments on Oct 14, 2018:
In archaeology (which is the practice of study humans through the things they leave behind) itis frequently possible to see the introduction and spread of new technologies. Frequently, a new technology gets introduced (e.g. steel axes to non-metal using societies _ Iroquois and Algonquin pre-contact societies) and the spread is easily witnessed in the archaeological record. It is often easy to see the impact that the new technology had on the society. Along with this its often possible to see societal stratification and technology access, loss of previous technology, modification of new technology, competition between new and old technologies, usage strategies around the new technologies, etc. So the answer to your question is yes, anthropologists do study these things and the issue you present may be observed and documented by some future anthropologist. Given the non-preservable evidence involved, perhaps you could document your observations to assist future researcher.

t1nick comments on Oct 14, 2018:
Maugre is now quite rare, but having served the English language for more than 700 years, it's due whatever rest it's currently enjoying. Although it may not be a word worth incorporating into your expressive vocabulary, being familiar with it will be helpful in reading the works of such authors as Shakespeare, Scott, Milton, and, as in this quote from his Essays, First Series, Emerson: "By virtue of this inevitable nature, private will is overpowered, and, maugre our efforts or our imperfections, your genius will speak from you, and mine from me." The word is Anglo-French in origin, coming from "mal" or mau, meaning "evil," and gré, meaning "grace, favor." source: Merriam-Webster Dictionary online
