Do you find it offensive when theist think without a belief in god/gods, it’s impossible to have ...
wordywalt comments on May 30, 2018:
I don't care what they think. I know that I have a strong moral code -- and that is all that matters.
I'm old enough now that I'm starting to think a little bit about my legacy.
wordywalt comments on May 30, 2018:
Of course, people are your legacy -- in several senses. First, their is your progeny. Second, there are the people whom you have influenced directly during your lifetime. They, in turn will influence others withe some of the thoughts you have generated or passed on, and it never ends as long as the human species exists. Finally, if you have written a lot expressing your ideas and shared those writings widely, people will be influenced by what you have said in writing. As a person who has tried to live a good, helpful life, as a high school teacher, as a teacher educator, as an educational staff developer focusing on improving teaching, learning and school leadership, as an educational writer, and as a school administrator, I don't worry about my legacy. I do sometimes wonder how widely my influence has spread.
Morality is Very subjective, As an individual you decide what is Moral.
wordywalt comments on May 29, 2018:
Some laws are not moral, but imperfect expressions of cultural biases. Some laws are to be resisted if we are moral people. Example: The Jim Crow of the American south prior to the late 1960s.
I have always wondered why this happens.
wordywalt comments on May 29, 2018:
I don't understand that response. I feel that I still have a lot to learn about human psychology and cognitive development and love to talk about the topics.
What's the one most negative/detrimental effect religious teachings had on your life?
wordywalt comments on May 29, 2018:
The most negative thing, and the thing I fear most, is the aggressive and intrusive way that the evangelicals are moxing religion and politics and how it is trying to force its dogma onto us with the force of bad law.
Italy is in the midst of a constitutional crises.

Dishonesty In looking back over decades in American Baptist Fundamentalism I must say this one ...
wordywalt comments on May 29, 2018:
There is no doubt that in the institutions of the Southern Baptist Convention, the tyranny of the group prevails. Fandamentalistic "true believers" dominate the culture of most Souther Baptist churches. Those true believers use all means at their disposal to force all others in the group to share the same unquestioning beliefs in the evangelical dogma. If anyone shows any deviance from of questioning of any segment of the dogma, they exert pressure on him or her. The pressure many take the form of sweetly being nice to the person to convince him to come back to the fold. It may also take the form of judging and shaming. If the person does not "shape up", they will either make him or her so uncomfortable that he or she will choose to leave the group, or they eject him from the group That is cognitive dissonance just as Leon Festinger defined it.
Study Finds Link Between Brain Damage and Religious Fundamentalism
wordywalt comments on May 29, 2018:
There is no doubt that the behavior of all fundamentalistic religious "true believers" is different from the normal and that indicates that something is impeding rational judgment. It is definitely abnormal and irrational behavior.

What do you think about the social determinants of health?
wordywalt comments on May 27, 2018:
The culture in which one is raised and the income level of the family are large determinants of behavior. Genes and behavior determine health. I was raised in the deep south with a lot of fried food and carb-laden food, and which smoking was widespread. Systematic exercise was not. I was overweight for much of my life until I became a diabetic at the age of 45.I was also a heavy smoker. I developed diabetes at the age of 45 and became more serious about weight control by diet and exercise. I developed high cholesterol and high blood pressure at the age of 65 I quit smoking at the age of 56. At the age of 69, I had a heart attack and had to have a pacemaker installed. The smoking has led to COPD. Today, I eat healthy food and healthy amounts of food. I have walked 3 - 5 miles a day for years, and now am on a very heavy weight-lifting regiment. With proper diet, heavy exercise, and the proper medication, the diabetes, blood pressure, and cholesterol and are under full control, as is my weight. My heart is stronger than it was over 20 years ago and my COPD is manageable. My point is this: One's health is largely controlled by one's personal cjoices and behaviors. Regardless of the culture, one can and should choose to live a healthy lifestyle. And, even in middle age, one can still increase quality of life and life-span by choosing to live a healthy lifestyle. If one does not, he or she will pay the piper. .
What type of tomatoes does everyone like to plant?
wordywalt comments on May 27, 2018:
Over the years, I have grown many varieties, including the Cherokee Purple.. After receiving a gift of black heirloom tomato seeds from my daughter, I was so impressed with the taste (sweet and tangy), texture and juiciness, That they are the only tomatoes I grow any more. They are head and shoulders above any other variety I have ever tried. I save seeds from each year's harvest and use them to grow my own plants. Incidentally, I have seeds to share if you would like some. Just send me your name and mailing address and I will send you a few seeds.

At this point, I see very few, if any Republicans who deserve my vote.

It's interesting when I bring up Ayn Rand people write the opposite of what she is saying.
wordywalt comments on May 25, 2018:
Let me add that Rand was saying the the individual is all that is important, that we -- alone -- are responsible for our creations and that we, alone deserve the entire fruits of our efforts. That is nothing but an egocentric pile of crap manufactured by a self-absorbed moral idiot. When we create an idea,an invention, a piece of writing, we stand on the shoulders of those who came before and laid the intellectual scaffolding on which we built. Without them, we would be nothing. Similarly, there are always people and agencies -- including governments --- who have helped us to become who and what we are. To ever say that we did it all by ourselves is pure self-absorbed bullshit!

What's the difference between anecdotal evidence and scientific evidence?
wordywalt comments on May 25, 2018:
Anecdotal evidence is simply an analysis of events that occur in a natural context or setting. Most scientific studies start with a null hypothesis to be disproved, and a design of study to test the validity or invalidity of the hypothesis. Both methods can yield valid results, and both (depending on the knowledge and skill of the observers and the design of the study)can fail to produce good data and conclusions..
It's interesting when I bring up Ayn Rand people write the opposite of what she is saying.
wordywalt comments on May 25, 2018:
You are still wrong about what Rand was trying to say. If you want to be objective, look into what the ritics are really aying and the grounds for their remarks, instead of ignoring them and simply trying to object to the remarks. Grow up intellectually and morally, young man.

Draft of Arizona school science standards removes evolution wording
wordywalt comments on May 24, 2018:
Because evangelical "true believers" are so blindly and deeply wedded to the biblical creation myth that they feel that evolution undermines the "truth" of the Bible, ergo of their religion. We must fight against these efforts without fail. When I was a high school teacher in central Florida in 1966, I put my job and career on the line to resist such efforts against evolution. I was teaching biology, and my principal came to me and directed me to NOT teach about evolution. I responded that as a science teacher, I had the obligation to deal with all of the principles and facts of science, and did not have the right to withhold any. My principle responded, "It's your ass." I did teach a full unit on evolution and had no complaints from the community. Stand up to ignorance, superstition and mindless "true belief."

wordywalt comments on May 23, 2018:
No, our reality is not a figment of our imagination in the way you insinuate. Our reality is constructed through our interactions with our environment. We develop cognitive schema which we used to interpret and analyze data from our interactions. We then build cognitive structures or patterns of meaning which inform and guide us.

Why is there so much anger here?
wordywalt comments on May 22, 2018:
There are 2 main sources of anger: (1) outrage at the incivility and lack of morality in the behavior of irrational haters and fear-mongers, and (2) dissatisfaction with oneself which the person has difficulty dealing with. I often feel anger toward those in the first case, but I am not angry about who I am and/or my circumstance.

Do people become more bigoted as they age?
wordywalt comments on May 22, 2018:
Most people do NOT become more bigoted with age. Usually, the bigoted person has become so by late teens to early adulthood. They then tend to identify with and associate with others of the same angry, irrational, hate-filled, and fear-filled ilk -- forming a self-reinforcing culture. In effect they give over theair thought processes to the irrationality of the bigotry of the group. For some reason, he same thing is now happening to your mother. She has given control over who she is and what she thinks to the culture of bigotry.

wordywalt comments on May 22, 2018:
There is absolutely no reason to believe that when we die our consciousness continues to exist. You are falling into the same trap that religious people do when they believe that we have a soul and that soul continues to live after our bodies die. It is simply a selfish expression of a desire to live forever, to believe that we are something more than we are. Our consciousness is nothing more than the cognitive structures and schema which our brains construct to make sense of our environment. That cognitive structures and those schema do not exist outside of a living, functioning brain -- period! Face reality -- with dignity!

Relationships for penguins are a much simpler and elemental matter -- propagation. Human relationships are much more complex and we often get into them for the wrong reasons.
