We are not as fully represented by our intellect as we think, the emotional part of the brain is very powerful and not that hard to lead away from reality. Hubris that "I'm too smart for that" can get you hooked into a lot of different things. Now the most egregious Trumpers have indeed fallen into the rabbit hole, and now are in the throes of an actual cult.
