The EC was formulated as a way to get rural states to agree to join the inchoate union by making their influence closer to the influence of more populous, urban states in the choice of a president. That compromise worked. Back when the country was young, when electors did not grant a majority to a single candidate, which the founding fathers anticipated and welcomed, the choice of president became the responsibility of the house of representatives. Presumably, that deliberative body, members chosen by direct vote of the people, would come to an agreement as to who the president should be. This happened once, when John Quincy Adams won half as many electoral votes as Andrew Jackson, but William Crawford and Henry Clay split the vote and there was no majority. Adams was chosen by the house of representatives, and had a short and ineffective term as president in what was popularly termed "the corrupt bargain". Jackson beat him the next election, and Adams returned to the political scene by winning a seat in the house where he served with distinction until his death. Jackson, on the other hand, was a Trump-like figure who ignored the rule of law and effectively tried to commit genocide with the "trail of tears" deaths of 4000 native Americans, mostly Cherokee. The electoral college was obsolete back in the 19th century. It requires a constitutional amendment to change, and that ain't easy. But you are right. It should be abolished. Yeah, it can be irritating. I use an adblocker, and I have yet to whitelist a site. I did subscribe to the Raw Story site, I like what they are doing there and would love to see it continue so I think it's money well spent. If the adblock blocker gives an option to "continue without supporting this site", I click through that way - sometimes it works out, some sites don't have this option. I've stopped feeling guilty about small shit like this. If I can't get around it that way, I just don't read the content. The performance I see is much better this way - it was getting out of hand on a lot of sites.

Our biggest threat, IMHO, is the proliferation of propaganda among those not sophisticated enough to realize that's what it is. And it's getting harder to spot, even for those of us who are looking for it. Also, if this does happen, other outside forces will come in to fill the vacuum, and pick the winners.
