Hi. I have a final powerpoint assignment for my communication class and I have to choose a culture. I was thinking about doing it for Atheism. What do you think? Is it a good idea? Will anyone help?
I think it's a great idea and I would do so as objectively as possible. I would interview religious and nonatheist nonbelievers for a an outside looking in perspective as well as research on the history of atheism etc. Good stuff. If you do the presentation please share it. Very cool!
Of course Atheism is a "culture". Your workplace is a culture, the street you live on ---you and your neighbors --- is a culture, and this website is a culture.
culture: the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group
Search Google: Atheism as a culture.

It's not one culture but individuals escaping the confines of an oppressive and domineering paradigm. Multiple paradigms exist and overlsp. Their are no guidelines es or rules. I do not know if this costitutes a culture. My anthropologicsl training rebels at the thought. Maybe a subculture.
Im sure it will be a hit. I think its a great idea. Will i help. I can give you my experience, strength, and hope. Once you use common since and realize your not trapped in fear. Cool huh?
Sure. Will help however I can. Happy to offer my perspective.
As a communication instructor who teaches public speaking, I say absolutely go for it. Atheism is not a belief system (obviously) and certainly not what one would think of a traditional culture, but the increased visibility of skeptics, freethinkers, atheists, etc in recent years has really taken on a life of its own. This is probably due to the fact that we are not automatically tortured or killed for admitting it (at least in most areas) now. Sunday Assembly is a ‘church’ gathering for secularists. Apps and groups like this one exist because this community is working on connecting with one another. I personally follow every single atheist board on Pinterest just to show solidarity. More celebrities are ‘coming out’ as nonbelievers and as a culture I would say that slowly we are shifting from superstition to reason. There is plenty to identify our culture. Your challenge will be the labels. Some say atheist is a meaningless term because it should be the default. We don’t have terms to describe not believing in fairies or unicorns. So you may want to make mention of the various terms for the secular community - skeptics, freethinkers, atheists, antitheists, humanists, secularists, and agnostics.
Let me know how it turns out!
^^^^^^ What a brilliant lecture! ?
That's an interesting thought that it never occurred to me... is Atheism a culture?
I wondered that. We are so diverse and sometimes don't even agree on the definition of that word. Culture wouldnt be the first word that came to mind
I'd ask your instructor before you get too far into it. It might not be acceptable for the class. And if it is, it might be much more difficult than other cultures that have more fully developed aspects of their appearance norms, marriage and relationship norms, etc.
Always ask the teacher, the better you are informed the more precise you can document your own writings!
Is it a culture? Really a culture? Really, really?
I think that it is wrong to rank us as a culture. To segregate people with other beliefs has not worked out well for Humanity!!
Sounds like a great idea! I've seen discussions about "old Atheism" and "new Atheism"
Perhaps your presentation could include that aspect.
Can you be specific about what kind of help you want?
