I know I need to keep debating religious extremists and instill doubt to battle the poison of religion but arguing against people with such small minds and stout beliefs is draining. Lately I've been avoiding commenting back when I see ridiculous religious dogma. Tired of wasting my time. What would Christopher Hitchens do?
I don't engage in debate anymore precisely because it is a waste of time. You can't change most peoples mind and trying to do so is draining. When I see all of the damage done in the name of religion it makes me feel as though I should do my part and fight the ignorance but its futile. I mention Hitchens because I enjoyed his debates so much and he was so elegant with his words and unforgiving with his assault. All I can do is guard my children from indoctrination and hope the new generation is wiser than the old.
What are you? An atheist in shining armor going forth to save the masses? For fuck sake chill out and let others live their life. There are far too many extremists out there as it is.
I would love to chill out and let others live, but the religious won't chill out and let me live. There really should be an 11th commandment: Keep thy religion to thyself.
Dunno about Hitchens, but maybe think about your engagements- Don't fight battles you are never going to win: Blind faith will be forever blind. Better by far to assist those in doubt to find the path to enlightenment than to offer glasses to those who will not see.
I think it would depend upon his mood at the time.
I feel the same way. I still engage them in "debate", but it's exhausting at times.
Hang in there!!!!!
Oh, and please don't put yourself up against "The Master" in comparison.
Very, very few of us come close to measuring up to Hitchens.
I do not debate. If asked, I will present why I am an A-theist and then say I am not interested in anything they have to say.
