Don't you just love Carl Sagan?
The world is so exquisite with so much love and moral depth, that there is no reason to deceive ourselves with pretty stories for which there's little good evidence. Far better it seems to me, in our vulnerability, is to look death in the eye and to be grateful every day for the brief but magnificent opportunity that life provides.
I knew of him early on but when he hosted Cosmos on PBS in the late 70s I was in awe over his love of sciences besides astronomy. But also my family was from the same part of Russia/ White Russia and the river Bug... and the same reasons for coming to America and Ellis island
He also said that he really enjoyed LSD and then staying in the shower...
As a child I was influenced by Carl, growing up in a stare of the threat of Nuclear War!.
His views on SDI, Strategic Defense Initiative was really eye opening to me. Besides being a great mind, he was a great friend to the people, he was always looking out for me and you!, only wish the world knew it!.
Carl was both a sceptic and a visionary. I had the pleasure to talk with him about his research in Hawaii after his culminating speech to the Division of Planetary Sciences entitled "The Past, Present, and Future of Planetary Science". Many of my colleagues were motivated to pursue careers in astronomy because of his Cosmos series.
