Consciousness is much more than the thorn, it is the dagger in the flesh.
~Emile M. Cioran
I've heard it said that in bequeathing self-awareness on us, natural selection nearly did us in. It was (and is) almost more than we can handle. For a long time, the coping mechanism was, mostly, for most people, religion. Now things are shifting as we learn how to deploy critical thinking.
Strange thread for an agnostic group. This is literally the story of Adam and Eve and the fall of man. The fruit of the tree of knowledge brought consciousness to humans and we could no longer live in paradise. “God” then lists the consequences of being self-conscious.
