Sorry folks. I'm angry today. There has been a rape/murder and the police response was, as usual, to warn women to watch their backs.
[news.com.au]
I don't believe the cops are blaming the victims. The advice for women to be careful and aware of their surroundings - is appropriate. I'm in my 70's - would I go out late at night and walk thru a park by myself? no way - apart from rape crimes, there are addicts who don't care where or how they get money for their next fix, there are mentally ill people who hardly know where they are. Unthinking in this context means unsafe.
No Hobartian is clueless; blaming victims does not stop rapists, prison or death penalties stop rapists....this murdered raped famous Aussie Artist just sent a text message she thought she was safe nearly home when her rapist murdered her seconds later ....all of us Feminist Atheists must confront complacency male entitlement and police incompetence especially religion itself teaching misogyny patriarchy and "situational" delusion
@Faithless1, Of course, I understand mens behaviour which needs to be modified. In the meantime, all I'm saying - take EXTRA care
@Faithless1, @GreenAtheist Are you calling me "clueless"? I'm on your side for goodness sake. Evil staks the streets and parks in the dark of night - looking for prey such as this beautiful young woman. It found her. I'm the last person to call a victim to blame.
@Faithless1 You're right, I didn't read the whole article - I became too upset to do so. All I could think of was the lovely person snuffed out so cruelly. If I was to say that women should not, ever, be alone on the streets at night - I'd be shot down in flames as I have by other agnostics. In short, being situationally aware is not always enough.
Sounds like you'd be better off staying at home. where the dishes and dirty laundry are. so while you're there ... make me a ham sandwich and a beer?
I'm 76 years old - years since I was out at night on my own. Make your own damn sandwich.
yes...well.....I'm not surprised.
I taught my daughters HAND TO HAND COMBAT for self protection including how to rupture a penis and castrate a scrotum with a shoe. ...they are both happily married to Feminist Atheist men. ...not once did my girls follow bad police advice nor date a potential rapist. ...women need to project power and the positive message of bodily sovereignty GOLDEN RULE because rapists will be raped in prison if they rape
What are you not surprised at?
@Hobartian "Telling women to have 'situational awareness' is deeply unhelpful because it assumes that women aren't already constantly micromanaging their own safety in a bid to forward manage the poor behaviour of some men".
@patchoullijulie Look, really - there is little difference in context between other peoples posts and my own. I can't stop thinking of this young woman - I simply wish a friend had been with her. As for 'forward manage' the behaviour of men - how long will that take and how many rapes and murders? In the meantime....?
@Hobartian I feel that we are both in agreement about women taking control of their environment. I am just fed up with the onus always being put on the woman. I don't have answers I just know that's how I feel.
@Faithless1 am too often brought to tears for this issue. I was an abused wife - afraid for my life, I know about walking on eggshells
@Faithless1, @patchoullijulie You know, I can't remember seeing anything addressed to men about this issue.- why isn't sexual equality being taught in schools for starters. I love the comment from the dad who made sure his girls could defend themselves - shouldn't be necessary but 'in the meantime'
@Hobartian Exactly. Why isn't this mentioned in terms of men and how they behave, more often. Instead lets tell women what they should do nor not do. It is an unbalanced approach.
@patchoullijulie Hallelujah!! - surely the education system have something to answer for
@Hobartian I would agree, and that can fuel societies attitudes for sure. I spent 2010-2013 (after a 20 + year absence) and I could not help but notice the blatant sexism. I'm not sure it is worse than other places but it was certainly out in the open and totally acceptable, in fact acceptable to be both sexist and racist. So that kind of lends to my original comment that I am not surprised.
