I'm thinking about having a coming out party! Being atheist after so many years as a born again Christian! Although, many of my oldest friends still don't know, it's time to tell them, and time to spread the good word! It should be grande, like a wedding!

What could go wrong?

Like @Ellatynemouth, I find the idea of ‘coming out’ as an atheist to be very weird. But I understand the culture you live in, and the pressure it exerts to conform to religiosity. It’s helping me to understand this site much more as well. I found it very strange at first.

As a Brit living in Britain, the idea of proclaiming one’s atheism is completely alien - here, no-one cares, or very very few at any rate. Even the vast majority of those who have religion don’t care. It’s never a topic of everyday conversation, much less condemnation.

Very best wishes to you, and be prepared for argument, tears, and probably ostracism. Be brave.

I'm inclined to agree with you. It does seem a bit on par with boldly declaring, "I love cauliflower!" Maybe it's more an acknowledgement of the amount of away those around her have held for so long, but no longer do.

I find the whole idea of atheists 'coming out' quite bizarre.

You go, girl!

Santa Cruz is a laid back pot smokin' hippie town, your guests would celebrate with gusto, I imagine 🙂

7

Go for it I say! We atheists deserve to share our non beliefs. What would be good music to play at an atheist party?

I Hate You Jesus from Moral Orel.

Have fun. It will also be interesting to see how many of your friends become ex friends.

I have a few that I have come out to and they have chosen to ignore any religious conversations.

6

Unfortunately, I don't share your position. All my friends and relatives, even 'believers', keep religion out of their way in daily living. The prospect sounds like fun though.

I'd love to have a good reason to design, print and pass out 'tracts' beckoning people to discover true fulfillment and happiness by embracing reality; by giving up faith in gods, doctrines and 'isms' contrived for them to live by and issued by power lusting theologians and politicians.

6

Coming out as a non-believe is pretty freeing, but you should be prepared to loss friends and family. I hope that does not happen, hope for for the best but prepar for the worst.

The truth needs to be told we can't hide anymore! Thank you all for this amazing support!

You could have an "unbaptism" or a "rebaptism" out of Christianity and into Humanism, as a born again atheist.

I agree with the others that are advising caution, because group shock could go all kinds of sideways, depending on who attends, how they might react, and how much you rely on them as friends. Some might abandon you, or need time to get over their shock - unless you are inviting friends that already suspect, share your beliefs (or lack of belief), or those that would still care about you regardless.

I hope it turns out to be a happy party and I wish you well!

Would like to know how many leave right after the announcement ?

Why not? They invite people to or brag about their religious functions without giving it a second thought.

Be CAreful. These endtimer people are fucking crazy,

deathcult end of times waiting for the end of the earth

Open invitation? Open bar? I'd party with you over some atheism.

Hi, Jewels, and welcome to the website,

You might find your religious friends and relatives less enthusiastic than you imagine. If they don't attack you, they could just ignore you. I've encountered both reactions, but nobody who was happy about it.

On this agnostic.com website, you earn website points, and help other members get to know you better, when you write an informational profile that includes your hobbies and interests, and answer all the profile questions, since that's the first place many people look when they see a new member.

Also, the website uses your profile to find member matches, so the more details you include, the better the match.

Then you make comments and write your own posts to earn more points and privileges. You get different perks with each level, such as being able to private message others at level two, and when you reach level eight you get an agnostic T-shirt.

In case you don't know already, to find members near you, click on the "Meet" button at the top of the page, then on "Members," and enter your preferred search parameters.
Or click on the "About" button at the top of the page to find links to FAQ or the website tutorial.

there are many more atheists out there but too many are scared to buck the popular movement. We see the same thinking all over fashion, sports etc: scared to say what they really think!

Mozzletoff!

Did you say muzzles off 😀

@Jewels Yep!
