Really just a bit peeved right now. I do in fact have a sense of humor. My office people were very nice in getting a card for my birthday. They are fully aware that I am vegan. The card referenced lobsters getting boiled and that they hope my day was full of pleasant surprises only. Also bought a gift card. Now it could have been a gift for gas, supermarket, home furnishing, technology, etc. But no.

OUTBACK STEAKHOUSE

So yeah. I have a sense of humor and while I am appreciative of receiving gifts, etc. I am offended. Or maybe hurt by this. I know it's stupid, but they all know and have said how proud they are of me. It is a slap in my face. Such is life. Now I know.

Have a great day peeps.

WOW! I can sorta see the humor in the card. I swear alot and my last b-day card was something about the allotment of swear words being used up, hahahaha

BUT!!!!!!!!!

A gift card to Outback STEAKhouse for a known vegan?!?!?!?! Rude, crude and mean - better to have not even have bothered spending the money.

I'd be looking for a different place to work.

That’s rude. There are organizations that buy them but, I’m sorry, I don’t remember what they are. Google.

I totally understand that since I'm also vegan. The killing/death of animals wouldn't be an acceptable subject of a joke/humour for me especially if they know you are vegan. May be let them know you gently how you feel but that you also appreciate them as coworkers. You can always donate the gift card to charity or the food bank (at least here there are places you can donate gift cards to help others).

do you want her to be nice to them when they are not nice to her ? Thats just wrong, tell them in uncertain terms you think they are all asssholes and you don't appreciate it. Let them be the ones to feel bad ?

Yes indeed. Thanks.

@VAL3941 I think they meant it as a light joke but didn't realize the impact on her. If she explains it then they will understand. It seems they do value her as a coworker. Of course, I don't really know them or her. It could have been malicious then I wouldn't give them a chance to get away with it. If they were unaware about being too overly insensitive then they just need to be given a good explanation so they learn not to do it again. Some people are just unaware that vegans take their lifestyle seriously and are committed to their cause.

@graceylou
If that is the case vegans should lighten up a bit ?

@VAL3941 There are limits to everything. If you don't tell people what those limits are for you, they would never learn it for the future. I think it would be more productive than throwing a tantrum. If they were purposefully malicious, then they would get a harsher response.

@graceylou
Did she ever explain her limits ?

@VAL3941 I don’t know. You will have to ask her.

@graceylou
Nope ! Not my business really ?

Some people are just insensitive or possess a very juvenile sense of humor, that's why they're just "office people" and not within your circle of real friends. Don't sweat it.

Yep. That's right. Thanks.

Re-gift it to one of the people who gave it to you🙂 Or just give it to a friend who you know eats meat....

Nah, I'm going to see if the store can convert it to cash. 😉

Overlook the card as silly & go to Outback & get steamed vegetables of the day with a nice salad w/o a dressing on it. I use lemon & vinegarits. Then let them know how good it was.
