Your definition for atheism is wrong. The prefix 'a' means without. Atheism is 'without god belief.'
I don't care how anyone chooses to define the word. I do not believe any gods exist now, or have ever existed. I don't really give a flying rat's keister what you want to call it.
Annnnnd this is one of the reasons I posted what I did, earlier today, about people spending entirely too much time trying to label everything.
It's simple, gods aren't real, none of them, not one.
I am an atheist, I have knowledge of Gods, I am well read on the subject...do I believe they actually exist, NO. They are myths and legends.
When I say that as an atheist I do not believe in god I am not saying that no gods exist. I have made no assertions about a deity whatsoever, apart from the fact that I do not believe the assertions made by deists.
An analogy I have used in the past uses a roulette table. The next spin will either be red or black. Those are the only options, the same way that god either exists or doesn't. A deist asserts that the next spin will definitely be black (god exists). As an atheist I say that I do not believe them. I am not asserting that the next spin will be red (god does not exist). I am asserting that I cannot believe your claim until I have evidence that your claim is true. Obviously in this example there is a 50/50 chance that it will be black as we have previous form and probability to work out the likelihood - far greater than for the god claims!
Hope that explains why being an atheist does not mean asserting god(s) does not or cannot exist.
In my experience the position you are describing is labeled agnostic. I personally grant no possibility to the existence of anything supernatural. What would be the appropriate label for my position in your mind?
Me three.
Roulette wheels also have 0 and 00 in green.
If you believe the claim that a god exists you are a theist. Any other position you are an atheist. If you disbelieve due to lack of evidence but could be convinced if enough evidence was to be presented then you are an agnostic atheist,
Theist/Atheist and Gnostic/Agnostic relate to different prongs of the same question. Theism is belief and gnosticism is knowledge. Atheist does not believe, agnostic does not know.
